UNIT 4 – PAST SIMPLE (Thì quá khứ đơn)

1. Cách dùng:
a. Diễn tả hành động đã xảy ra và đã chấm dứt trong quá khứ, không còn liên quan tới hiện tại
Ví dụ: We bought the house in 2000. (Chúng tôi mua ngôi nhà đó năm 2000.)
b. Diễn đạt các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ
Ví dụ: She turned on her computer, read the message on Facebook and answered it. (Cô ấy bật máy
tính, đọc tin nhắn trong Facebook rồi trả lời nó.)
c. Diễn tả hồi ức, kỉ niệm
Ví dụ: When I was small, I used to go fishing in the afternoon.
(Hồi còn nhỏ, tôi thường đi câu cá vào buổi chiều.)
d, Diễn tả hành động xen giữa hành động khác trong quá khứ.
Ví dụ: They were playing football when it rained.
2. Công thức
* Động từ tobe.
+, S + tobe (was/were) + adj/n
-, S + be (was/were) – not + adj/n
?, Tobe (Was/Were) + S + adj/n?
Ví dụ: I was at grandma’s house yesterday.
I wasn’t at my house yesterday.
Were you at the park yesterday?
* Động từ thường.
+, S + Ved/2 + O
-, S + didn’t + Vo
?, Did + S + Vo?
Ví dụ:
(+): She met him at a party 2 years ago.
(-): They didn't meet last week.
(?): Did they meet at the party yesterday?
* Trường hợp ngoại lệ
- Động từ tận cùng là “e” chỉ thêm “d”. Ví dụ: live -> lived
- Tận cùng là phụ âm + y thì ta đổi “y” -> “i” rồi thêm đuôi “ed”. Ví dụ: study -> studied
- Động từ 1 âm tiết tận cùng là một nguyên âm + phụ âm -> gấp đôi phụ âm cuối rồi thêm “ed”.
Ví dụ: stop -> stopped step -> stepped plan -> planned
- Động từ 2 âm tiết, trọng âm rơi âm 2, tận cùng là nguyên âm + phụ âm -> nhân đôi phụ âm rồi
thêm “ed”. Ví dụ: permit -> permitted admit -> admitted
* Cách phát âm đuôi “ed”

3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Trong câu có các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ:
- yesterday (hôm qua).
- last night/last week/last month/last year: tối qua/tuần trước/tháng trước/năm ngoái.
- ago: cách đây (two hours ago: cách đây 2 giờ/ two weeks ago: cách đây 2 tuần...).
- in + một mốc thời gian trong quá khứ (in 1998, in 2000…).
- when: khi (trong câu kể).
