CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale

In recent years, the landscape of financial transactions has undergone a

significant transformation, driven by technological advancements and changing

consumer behaviors. The rise of digital payment systems, particularly e-wallets,

has revolutionized how individuals conduct transactions. It is important to note

that e-wallets (electronic payment systems are integrated with electronic wallets),

developed as a part of the overall electronic payment system, are inventions of

the twenty-first century. This shift is particularly evident in urban areas, where

convenience and efficiency are paramount in Barangay Poblacion, a bustling

community characterized by its diverse economic activities, serves as an ideal

setting to explore these evolving consumer preferences, where small shops,

cafes, restaurants, resorts and bars are prevalent, as e-wallets provide a faster

and easier way to pay.

The increasing penetration of smartphones and internet connectivity has

facilitated the adoption of e-wallets, allowing consumers to make payments

quickly and securely. The rapid advancement of technology, coupled with the

proliferation of mobile devices, has significantly altered consumer behavior and

payment preferences, leading to a greater reliance on digital solutions that offer

convenience and efficiency.

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

The shift away from cash use since 2020 suggests the pandemic provided

the conditions for many consumers to change their payment behavior. The

COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this trend, as consumers sought

contactless payment options to minimize physical contact. Mandalkar S. S. and

Bobhate, P. (2021), indicates that the pandemic significantly influenced consumer

behavior, with many adopting e-wallets for the first time due to health concerns

and the convenience of remote transactions

This study is justified by the necessity to comprehend the elements that

affect consumers’ choosing between GCash, Maya (formerly PayMaya), GrabPay,

ShopeePay, Lazada Wallet, Coins.ph, Starpay and other e-wallets. As the

popularity of e-wallets continues to rise, companies and financial institutions must

adapt to fulfill the demands of their target consumers. In order to provide light on

how speed and convenience, security and fraud protection, cashback and

rewards affect customer preferences, this study will examine such preferences

within a particular setting.

Theoretical Background

The increasing use of electronic wallets (e-wallets) has revolutionized

consumer payment behavior. Various factors influence a consumer’s decision to

use e-wallet. This study is guided by key factors that explain why consumer

accept or resist technological advancements in payment system.

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

The study is anchored by three theories namely: Technology Acceptance

Model, Digital Divide Theory, and Temporal Construal Theory. One of the most

widely used frameworks for understanding technology adoption is Technology

Acceptance Model (TAM) (Davis, 1989) posits that perceived ease of use and

perceived usefulness are critical determinants of technology adoption. It provides

a useful lens for understanding consumer preferences in payment methods,

particularly in evaluating the adoption of digital payment systems.

Consumers develop more positive attitudes toward technologies they

perceive as innovative and user-friendly. Digital payment systems, such as e-

wallets, succeed when they meet consumer expectations for efficiency and

simplicity.

As technology advances, gaps in access and usage, known as the digital

divide, become more pronounced, affecting consumer behavior in various

domains, including payment methods. The Theory of Digital Divide (Van Dijk,

2005) postulates that there is an economic and social gap between the population

of a nation and their access to technologies pertaining to information and

communication. E-wallet needs access to internet connection and smartphones in

order to pay. This disparity affects consumers’ ability to adopt e-wallet due to such

as income level, education and access to mobile devices and internet

connectivity.

Most promising theoretical framework for the assessment of customer

satisfaction. Oliver, R. proposed the Expectancy-Disconfirmation Paradigm

(EDP) in year (1977; 1980) implies that consumers purchase goods and services
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

with pre-purchase expectations about the anticipated performance. The

expectation level then becomes a standard against which the product or service is

judged. That is, once the product or service has been used, outcomes are

compared against expectations. Applying EDP, the study helps explain how

consumer experiences influence preferences for e-wallets, highlighting the

importance of meeting or exceeding consumer expectations to ensure satisfaction

and sustained usage.

Legal Bases

The increasing reliance on digital payments is supported by international

and national policies that promote sustainable economic development, digital

security, and financial inclusion.

In this study, three legal bases are anchored namely: United Nations

Sustainable Development Goals (2015) Goal 12, Republic Act No. 11127, or

the National Payment Systems Act (NPSA), and The Payment Services

Directive (PSD)

Based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (2015)

Goal 12: Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns which

emphasizing the need to reduce our ecological footprint by altering the ways we

produce and consume goods and resources.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) 12 seeks to

decouple economic growth from environmental degradation by encouraging

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

responsible consumption and production. It is about ensuring sustainable

consumption and production patterns, which is key to sustain the livelihoods of

current and future generations. Our planet is running out of resources, but

populations are continuing to grow. This involves minimizing the use of natural

resources and toxic materials, reducing waste and pollutants, and promoting

sustainable lifestyles. Traditional payment methods, such as cash and plastic

cards, require the production and distribution of physical materials, contributing to

resource consumption and environmental degradation. Adopting digital payment

methods, including e-wallets and contactless payments, can reduce the

environmental impact by eliminating the need for physical materials and

decreasing carbon emissions associated with production and transportation.

Changing our consumption habits, and shifting our energy supplies to more

sustainable ones are one of the main action we must make if we are going to

reduce our consumption levels.

In addition, Republic Act No. 11127, or the National Payment Systems

Act (NPSA), Section 2. Declaration of Policy. - The state recognizes that

payment systems are crucial parts of the financial infrastructure of the country and

it is essential that they function safely and efficiently for the stability and

effectiveness of the monetary and financial system. The NPSA supports financial

inclusion, ensuring that individuals in remote areas or those without traditional

banking services can still participate in the digital economy through mobile money

and e-wallet solutions.

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

Furthermore, The Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is the European

Union (EU) Directive that was developed to regulate payment services and

payment service providers in the European Union (EU) and European Economic

Area (EEA). PSD2 supports innovation and competition in retail payments and

enhances the security of payment transactions and the protection of consumer

data.

Review of Related Literature

Consumers are driven by the desire for seamless experiences, whether it's

for shopping, transferring money, or paying bills making their life easier. Bhardwaj

et al. (2020) found that consumers are more likely to adopt e-wallets when they

offer features such as real-time payment updates, the ability to store multiple

payment options, and the option for peer-to-peer money transfers.

E-wallets are revolutionizing the way consumers manage their money.

Offering a combination of security, convenience and advanced functionality, e-

wallets are becoming an indispensable tool for individuals and businesses alike

(E-pay Space, 2025). Their popularity stems from the security, convenience, and

faster transactions they provide (Lye, R. 2024). The main objective of e-wallet is

to make paperless money transactions easier stated by Vikaspedia (2024). In an

article stated by Inquiro (2024), it shows GCash, pioneered in the Philippine digital

payment scene, stands out with its user-friendly interface and diverse

functionalities. Maya, this rising star in the e-wallet arena prides itself on simplicity

and accessibility. GrabPay, known for its roots in ride-hailing has evolved into a

comprehensive e-wallet service. On top of paying for rides, users can now shop
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

online, order food, and settle bills seamlessly. Coins.ph combines the

convenience of an e-wallet with additional financial services—such as

cryptocurrency trading and mobile load purchases. Its standout feature includes

allowing users to convert Bitcoin into the country’s currency, showcasing

innovation in the digital finance space. In an article mybest (2024), Shopee is one

of the leading e-commerce sites in the Philippines, and a ShopeePay account

offers a seamless payment method for placing your orders online. Lazada Wallet

is a mobile wallet that is directly linked to your Lazada account. With this app, you

can pay for goods purchased from Lazada. This makes online shopping more

convenient than cash-on-delivery transactions, where you have to prepare the

amount you need to pay. Starpay is a leading financial technology company

licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) as an e-money issuer and an

operator of payment systems stated by Fintech News Philippines (2024). While e-

wallets may provide an easier way to handle personal finances and investment

proceeds, consumers must not forget about the prevalence of scams and the

need to guarantee the security of their personal data (Capital Com Online

Investments Ltd, 2025).

The evolution of consumer payment preferences has been a focal point in

recent research, highlighting a significant shift from traditional cash transactions to

digital payment methods. Foster, et. al (2010) examined consumer payment

behaviors, revealing a decrease in cash holdings and withdrawals since 2010,

coupled with an increase in card payments compared to 2009. Stated by Stavins

(2018), payment method choice is affected very strongly by consumer individual

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

preferences, but steering by merchants may be effective under some

circumstances. Both merchants’ reluctance to offer price discounts and

consumers’ limited response to them lead to the low observed occurrences of

such incentives. The payments industry, along with consumer preferences, is

constantly fluctuating. To meet evolving expectations, payment providers and

merchants must understand consumer needs and behaviors. They must also

consider what drives consumers toward one payment option or another and, by

extension, one merchant or another (NMI, 2025).

Review of Related Studies

Understanding consumer preferences in payment methods has become

crucial in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape. Numerous studies have

examined the factors influencing payment preferences and the implications for

consumer behavior and market trends.

In the study of Parungao, Rizelle Angelica B., MBA (2024) titled

“Cashless Transactions: Assessing The Impact Of E-Wallet On Customers’

Security, Expenditure, And Satisfaction”, highlights the impact of e-wallet

usage on consumers’ security, expenditure, and satisfaction. As a result, the study

concludes that the use of e-wallets has significant impact on consumers

particularly on their security, expenditure and satisfaction which implies that

consumers will continuously use e-wallets as they are advantageous. It is

recommended to further improve the present study by considering other variables

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

and involving a larger number of respondents. Based on the study, which explores

consumer behavior and the growing reliance on digital payment systems, a clear

connection can be drawn to our study on e-wallet consumer preferences in

Poblacion, Panglao. The study emphasizes how technological advancements,

convenience, and security influence the adoption of cashless transactions—

factors that are similarly relevant in a localized context like Poblacion.

Understanding how global trends in digital finance reflect on a smaller

community's preferences allows our research to highlight the adaptability and

openness of local consumers toward digital payment innovations, particularly e-

wallets, thereby aligning with the broader shift toward a cashless society.

Furthermore, a study by Shasha Teng & Kok Wei Khong (2021), a titled "

Examining actual consumer usage of E-wallet: A case study of big data

analytics" whereas a systematic review of previous mobile payment studies

revealed that studies mainly focused on consumer adoptions via conducting

surveys, yet the low adoption of mobile payment services still exists. Despite a

number of studies investigated barriers to mobile payment consumer adoptions,

little explanation has been provided without taking ecosystem factors of mobile

payment into account. Given the promising future of digital payments, we believe

it is more relevant to study the actual usage of e-wallets via a novel approach. It

is suggested that governments reform and upgrade the monitoring framework to

accommodate the development of payment systems. The findings from this big

data-driven research are crucial to understanding not only what consumers claim

to prefer, but what their actual behavior demonstrates. This implies that while
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

perceived trust is important, habitual use is often influenced by tangible benefits

and digital convenience.

Upon analyzing the study of Abella, Mizraim L. et al. (2024), titled

"Unveiling the Digital Payment Preferences of Customers in Toledo City"

revealed a distinct preference for GCash among digital payment users in Toledo

City, with GCash surpassing PayMaya and PayPal in perceived usefulness, ease

of use, and users attitude towards using, resulting in a higher inclination to use the

platform. As significant difference were found between the users’ perceived ease

of use and usefulness among GCash, PayMaya, and PayPal. This relates directly

to our study on consumer preferences in Poblacion, Panglao, because both

studies examine what drives users to choose specific e-wallets.

Inquiries, Investigation, Immersion

Thematic Analysis Interview: 3 Respondents

Question: What e-wallet platform do you use? Why did you choose that e-

wallet plaform?

Respondents #1 "I barely use gcash or different e wallet platforms since it

is very time consuming and sort of hustle in my part, since i need to go some store

for cash in and i will just deposit e-cash for special purposes, specially for payment

for bills and so forth."

Respondent #2 “I myself use GCash. It's extremely popular here in the

Philippines and really convenient to use. I like the fact that I can pay bills,

purchase load, send money, and even save a small amount all from one app. I
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 33

even use it to scan QR codes when I purchase from stores or small stalls. It's

really convenient, especially if I don't have cash with me. And what’s nice is they

often have promos or cashback, so it feels like I’m saving a bit while spending

smartly."

Repondents #3 "I have been using GCash for about five years now

because mobile payments are currently on trend, and we need it to conduct

transactions online. Another reason I use GCash is that it is easy to use in my

area, where the signal is quite strong. I am not worried about sending or typing

the wrong digits when transferring money to someone because I always make

sure that my recipient receives the money correctly. I also think that, GCash is

widely used in the Philippines, and it is easy to get verified if you have valid IDs to

present."

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This contains the summary, findings, and conclusion of the study. The

recommendations are presented with the objective of utilizing the results of this

delving.

Summary

This study was conducted to examine the e-wallet consumer preferences in

Poblacion, Panglao. The results were statistically calculated to determine the level

of e-wallet consumer preference in Poblacion, Panglao. There are 256

respondents who participated on the survey. Thus, the researchers made a mix

method type of questionnaire with ten (10) tabular questions. All the information

needed is collected by the researchers to support the general topic and to assess

the reader’s understanding of the importance of the topic. Before the researchers

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn:

E-wallet usage is highly prevalent in Poblacion, Panglao, with GCash as

the dominant platform. Consumers prioritize efficiency, security, and usability,

which significantly influence their satisfaction and continued use of e-wallets.

Social influence plays a vital role in adoption, suggesting that digital financial

behavior is often shaped by peer and family recommendations. Despite minor

differences in satisfaction across puroks, the community as a whole demonstrates

a strong acceptance and positive experience with e-wallet systems.

Recommendations

In light of the study's findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are

offered:

1. Students. Students are encouraged to utilize widely adopted e-wallet platforms

like GCash to enhance their financial literacy and adapt to the growing digital

economy. With high ratings in speed and convenience, e-wallets can aid in

managing allowances, school payments, and small purchases efficiently and

securely.

2. Parents. Parents are recommended to guide their children in the responsible

use of e-wallets by teaching them how to manage digital funds, be aware of

security practices, and take advantage of features such as cashback and

transaction tracking. This promotes financial discipline and awareness from an

early age.

3. Teachers. Teachers can incorporate discussions on digital finance, including

the use of e-wallets, into relevant lessons (e.g., in Technology and Livelihood

Education or Economics). Encouraging students to be familiar with secure

digital transactions can prepare them for real-world financial situations.

4. School Administrators. It is advisable for school administrators to explore

partnerships with trusted e-wallet providers like GCash for facilitating digital

payments for fees, contributions, and school events. This can enhance

efficiency, transparency, and convenience in school transactions.

5. Consumer in Barangay Poblacion. Residents should be informed about the

benefits of using e-wallets, particularly the convenience and security they

offer. Local seminars or barangay programs may be organized to promote

digital financial literacy and encourage safe e-wallet practices.

6. Business Owners. Local businesses are encouraged to adopt e-wallet

payment systems such as GCash with highest percentage used by consumers

to meet the growing consumer preference for digital transactions. Doing so

can increase customer satisfaction, improve sales efficiency, and reduce the

need for handling cash.

7. Future Researchers. Further studies could explore the long-term impacts of e-

wallet use on consumer behavior, compare user satisfaction across different

municipalities, or examine the barriers preventing the use of lesser-known e-

wallets like Starpay. Mixed methods research involving interviews or focus

groups is also recommended to deepen understanding of user experiences.
