I. Introduction

Health is one of the most important priorities with which people

should be profoundly concerned. People have different ways of dealing with their
illnesses, and their cultural and religious beliefs affect them. Local communities'
healthcare systems are significantly influenced by their cultural and religious
beliefs. Every community has created healing techniques to deal with the depressing
impacts of disease on daily life as well as health belief systems to explain illness (F.
L. Jocano, 1966; Mc Laughlin & Braun, 1998). These preventive health treatments
are frequently supported by significant ideas, information, and methods intended to
increase the efficacy of the medication (Banerjee & Jalota, 1988; Scotch, 1963).
Ever since people are born, they are introduced to their community's culture,
meaning it is engraved in their body and mind. Understanding the connection
between culture and health is fundamentally important since it shapes people's
perspectives and methods of making decisions (Purnell, 2005; Vaughn, Jacquez, &
Baker, 2009). The connection can be attributed to the folk healing system.

Apart from affiliated forms of health knowledge and codified medical

systems, folk medicine is one of the three primary subcategories of traditional
medicine (Telles, Pathak, Singh, & Balkrishna, 2014). As acknowledged and defined
by the World Health Organization, traditional medicine is the knowledge, skills, and
practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different
cultures used in the maintenance of health and in the prevention, diagnosis,
improvement, or treatment of physical and mental illness (World Health Organization
[WHO], 2020). Correlatively, folk medicine refers to those conventional knowledge
systems that have been passed down orally over many centuries and make use of
locally indigenous ecosystem components (Payyappallimana, 2010). Typically, the
people who keep and administer folk medicine are the folk healers themselves.

The traditional healers, formerly known as babaylan, now go by a

number of titles, including albularyo, manghihilot, mangluluop, mangtatawas, and
faith healers. Albularyos, however, are generallypractitioners, and most of them have
a family history of healing. By means of the luop, or ritual, the Mangluluop ascertains
the origin of an illness. The Manghihila people use therapeutic massages such as
Manghihilot, but they employ various techniques to carry out their diagnostic
processes in therapeutic massage. Tawas are used by the Mangtatawas to offer
hints regarding the nature and the sickness while carrying out restorative practices.
Currently, they employ various materials.in their customs, such as the use of alum,
candles, eggs, mirrors, plain papers, and rolling paper for cigarettes. (Stuart 2003)

In a recent study, Rebuya et al., 2020 said in their study that the
albularyos of Camarines Sur's fourth district, or Partido area, follow similar practices
when performing himolso, hilot, and orasyon in alongside using lana and kandila as
common healing instruments. These important informants' healing techniques are all
based on God with the pure aim of curing ailments and helping others, despite some
noticeable variances and parallels in how they describe their methods and
procedures.

The study of Bibon (2021) came to the conclusion that the richness of the
local culture was reflected in the customs and the persistence of folk healing ideas.
Putting the parasantigwar's life experiences to use helped establish two key pillars
for the learning of folk healing techniques: life setbacks and apprenticeship. This
demonstrates how the family, as the person's immediate surroundings, is important
for the growth and inspiration of learning folk healing skills.

Ternate, Cavite is one of the municipalities in the province of Cavite,

which is composed of 10 barangays: Poblacion I, Poblacion IA, Poblacion II,
Poblacion III, Bucana, San Jose, San Juan I, San Juan II, Sapang I, and Sapang II.
In Ternate, Cavite, there are many folk healers whose healing practices differ from
one another, and they are patronized by some of its residents. However, there is no
published paper online that documents the albularyos in the municipality of Ternate
in the province of Cavite. Therefore, the researchers decide to record and analyze
albularyos practices, culture, and religious beliefs. Hence, this study may provide
appreciation for the culture of traditional medicine, which can be used in
understanding the way of life in the local cultures and traditions of albularyos in
Ternate, Cavite. In this study, the researchers aim to determine the number of folk
healers in the municipality of Ternate and determine which among them are
entertained the most by the residents. Also, this study tends to seek the reason why
the majority of people in the study area consult albularyo rather than formal
medicine, even though there is a free checkup in the community.
