Question No. 35 to 38 are case study based questions and contain five sub-parts each.
You are expected to answer any four sub-parts in these questions.
37 India has a long and rich tradition of water conservation and management. 4
Almost every region in India has unique traditional water harvesting
systems that have helped manage water resources sustainably. Now,
increasing population and economic demands are putting stress on both
groundwater and our rivers. The per capita water availability in the country
has decreased from 1816 cubic metres in 2001 to 1544 cubic metres in
2011. An area is said to be experiencing “water stress” if available
freshwater is below 1700 cubic metres per person per year.
38. India ranked the second highest for the rate of deforestation after losing
6,68,400 hectares of forest cover in the last 30 years. The study attributes
the increase in deforestation in India to the pressures resulting from
expanding human settlements. An annual destruction of 21,05,753
hectares has been attributed to cattle grazing, agricultural activities and
human activities. Grazing of cattle in forest areas is increasing and this is
adversely affecting the fertility of the soil and causing soil erosion. In the
past 15 years, over three lakh hectares of forest land have been diverted
across states and union territories for infrastructural and industrial projects.
States like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha topped the list in forest
land diversion. Roads, mining projects and irrigation facilities sprouted,
marking the nation's march towards development. India plans to restore 20
million hectares of its forest cover by 2030.
