Section - E
Question No. 35 to 38 are case study based questions and contain five sub-parts each.
You are expected to answer any four sub-parts in these questions.

37 India has a long and rich tradition of water conservation and management. 4
Almost every region in India has unique traditional water harvesting
systems that have helped manage water resources sustainably. Now,
increasing population and economic demands are putting stress on both
groundwater and our rivers. The per capita water availability in the country
has decreased from 1816 cubic metres in 2001 to 1544 cubic metres in
2011. An area is said to be experiencing “water stress” if available
freshwater is below 1700 cubic metres per person per year.

A. Do you think India is a water stressed country? Give reason

B. Enlist the factors that have led to water scarcity in India.
C. Name one state in India which is facing:
a) less water stress
b) high water stress
D. What measures are being taken to address the issue of water
shortage in India?
E. Water is present in abundance on Earth, but is still scarce. Give
reason.

38. India ranked the second highest for the rate of deforestation after losing
6,68,400 hectares of forest cover in the last 30 years. The study attributes
the increase in deforestation in India to the pressures resulting from
expanding human settlements. An annual destruction of 21,05,753
hectares has been attributed to cattle grazing, agricultural activities and
human activities. Grazing of cattle in forest areas is increasing and this is
adversely affecting the fertility of the soil and causing soil erosion. In the
past 15 years, over three lakh hectares of forest land have been diverted
across states and union territories for infrastructural and industrial projects.
States like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha topped the list in forest
land diversion. Roads, mining projects and irrigation facilities sprouted,
marking the nation's march towards development. India plans to restore 20
million hectares of its forest cover by 2030.

A. Enlist the main causes of deforestation enlisted above.

B. India plans to restore its forest cover by 2030. Why is it necessary?
C. In which state maximum forest land has been diverted down to
non-forestry use?
D. Overgrazing has a negative impact on forest land. Explain
E. Explain one consequence of deforestation.

39. In our households, we utilize various appliances such as electric heaters,

geysers, and electric irons, all of which share a common component – the
element. One day, Rahul became curious and enquired about the red-hot
colour of the rods in the heater. His mother explained Joule's law of heating
to him. Another day, a fire erupted in Rahul's neighborhood, prompting him
and his mother to rush and help their neighbors. Later, they discovered that
the fire resulted due to a sudden flow of large current due to a direct
contact of live wire and neutral wire. A survey was then conducted, related
to the causes of residential structure fire deaths.

A. Name the component of the heating devices that turns red-hot on

passage of electric current.
B. State the reason behind the fire that erupted in Rahul’s
neighbourhood.
C. Suggest a method/safety device by which fire could have been
avoided in Rahul’s neighbourhood.
D. Explain the working of the safety device suggested in the part
above.
E. Identify the most common cause of residential structure fire death.
