Divergent & Transform Plate Boundaries

Divergent plate boundaries occur when two tectonic plates move apart, leading to the formation of new crust and underwater volcanoes, resulting in mid-oceanic ridges. Transform plate boundaries involve plates sliding past each other, causing pressure build-up and violent earthquakes, with minimal volcanic activity. The document compares the earthquake and volcanic activity associated with divergent, convergent, and transform plate boundaries.

Divergent Plate Boundaries

Divergent plate boundaries (constructive plate boundaries) occur when two plates move away

from each other. New crust is formed at the boundary as magma moves up from the mantle

below. When this happens underwater, it is described as sea-floor spreading.

As rising convection current is causing the crust to crack allowing the molten rock (magma) to

pass through on its way towards the surface. Some magma escapes to the surface as lava erupted

from underwater volcanoes. The volcanoes at this boundary form a mountain range called a mid-

oceanic ridge.
Transform Plate Margin

Transform-when two plates are moving past each other without converging or diverging, there

is a transform plate boundary. As the plates move, they rub and stick together creating a built up

in pressure which is released as violent earthquakes. Earthquakes occur at all types of plate

boundary but it is the most violent here. Volcanoes are found mainly at convergent and divergent

boundaries, not transform boundaries.

Type of Plate Boundary Earthquake/Volcanic Activity

Divergent Plate boundaries Gentle volcanic & earthquake activity

Convergent Plate boundaries Violent volcano & earthquake activity

Transform Plate boundaries Violent earthquakes
