Divergent & Transform Plate Boundaries
Divergent & Transform Plate Boundaries
Divergent plate boundaries (constructive plate boundaries) occur when two plates move away
from each other. New crust is formed at the boundary as magma moves up from the mantle
As rising convection current is causing the crust to crack allowing the molten rock (magma) to
pass through on its way towards the surface. Some magma escapes to the surface as lava erupted
from underwater volcanoes. The volcanoes at this boundary form a mountain range called a mid-
oceanic ridge.
Transform Plate Margin
Transform-when two plates are moving past each other without converging or diverging, there
is a transform plate boundary. As the plates move, they rub and stick together creating a built up
in pressure which is released as violent earthquakes. Earthquakes occur at all types of plate
boundary but it is the most violent here. Volcanoes are found mainly at convergent and divergent
