Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and analyse the eight parts of speech in English, and effectively use
them in constructing sentences.

Introduction
Understanding the different parts of speech is essential for constructing clear and meaningful
sentences in English.

For example
The (determiner) curious cat (noun) cautiously (adverb) approached (verb) the small (adjective)
mouse and (conjunction) pounced (verb) on it (pronoun) in (preposition) the dark (adjective) alley.
Ouch! (interjection).

There are eight parts of speech in English:


1. Noun : a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea.
2. Adverb : a word that describes or modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
3. Verb : a word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being.
4. Adjective : a word that describes or modifies a noun.
5. Conjunction : a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses.
6. Pronoun : a word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence.
7. Preposition : a word that shows the relationships between a noun or pronoun and
another
word in the sentence.
8. Interjection : a word or phrase used to express strong emotions or surprise.
9. Determiner : a word that determine a noun.

Identify the parts of speech in the following sentences and explain the tenses used.
