F. LESSON/PRESENTATION

Classification of hand stitches

1. Temporary stitches
2. Permanent stitches

“What is a temporary stitch? Anyone?” “It is the temporary stitch used for holding two
or more layers of fabric together during fitting
“Exactly! Very good.” or before working the permanent stitches.”

“How about the permanent stitch? Anyone?” “These stitches are made permanent on the
garment and need not be removed later like
“Great! Thank you so much!” temporary stitches. They are worked using
matching thread and the stitches line starts
and ends with a back stitch.”
THE 7 BASIC HAND STITCHES

1. Basting Stitch

“Basting is the technique used to temporarily

hold layers of fabric together until
permanently stitched. This is the simplest
form of basting, wherein the length of the
stitch and the space between stitches is the
same, showing equal amount of thread on
both upper and lower sides.”
“A basting stitch is a temporary sewing stitch
“Again class what is a basting stitch?”
used to hold fabric layers together, particularly
“Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr.”
for tasks like garment construction or quilting.”
“Very Good!”

2. Back Stitch

“It is a utility stitch that strongly and
permanently attaches two pieces of fabric.
This stitch is strong and sometimes
substituted from machine stitch. A hand-
sewn back stitch is a strong, reliable stitch.”

“Again class what is a back stitch?”

“Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr.”
“A back stitch is a hand-sewing stitch where
the needle is moved backward on the front
side of the fabric. This stitch is strong and
also reliable.”
“Very Good!”

3. Running Stitch

“It is similar to even basting, but there are

many stitches. smaller, straight, fine and
evenly spaced. The length of the stitches
varies from 1/16 to 1/8 inch in length. It is a
simple needlework stitch consisting of a line
of small even stitches that run in and out
through the cloth without overlapping.
Running stitches are used in hand-sewing
and tailoring to sew basic seams, hems and
gathers in hand patchwork to assemble
pieces of light fabrics and in quilting to hold
the fabric layers and batting or wadding in
place.”

“Again class what is a running stitch?”

“Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr.” “A running stitch is the basic stitch in
hand-sewing and embroidery, on which all
other forms of sewing are based. It is similar
to basting.”
4. Blanket Stitch
“It is also also called a buttonhole stitch as
apart from edging blankets, it is also used for
making buttonholes. The stitches are spaced
a quarter or half inch apart. Start from the
back of the fabric and bring the needle an
inch from its end. The blanket stitch is a stitch
used to reinforce the edge of thick materials.
Depending on circumstances, it may also be
called a cable stitch or a crochet stitch. It is "a
decorative stitch used to finish an unhemmed
blanket. The stitch can be seen on both sides
of the blanket.”

“Again class what is a blanket stitch?”

“Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr.”
“The blanket stitch is a decorative and
functional stitch used for finishing edges on
fabric, especially on blankets, but also on
other projects like clothing, appliques, and
crazy quilts.”
“Very Good!”

5. Catch Stitch

“A catch stitch, or cross-stitch, is one of the

standard sewing techniques used for
hemming. The use of this stitch creates a
zig-zag series of X's on the underside of a
piece of fabric. Strong and flexible, these
stitches are barely visible on the outside of a
garment and offer a clean finish for raw
edges. You can use this stitch to finish hems
with fabric that doesn't fray, and to tack facing
Invisibly. It is most commonly used on
garment hems but can also be used to tack 2
pieces together. Its zig-zagged pattern allows
for movement and give, making it an ideal
stitch even for thicker fabrics and knits as
well.”

6. Chain Stitch

“Chain Stitch is good to work on seams and

combine with embellishments. Chain stitches
is a sewing and embroidery technique that is
also used in making tambour lace, needle
lace, macrame, and crochet. In machine
sewing, Chain Stitch was used initially, which
was replaced by a more secure stitch later.”

“Again class, what is a chain stitch?”

“Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr.”

“Chain stitch is a sewing and embroidery

technique in which a series of looped stitches
“Very Good!” form a chain-like pattern.”

7. Stem Stitch

“An embroidery stitch is used to outline a

design. Specifically a stitch made by
overlapping backstitches to form a pattern like
a rope twist. This is similar to the back stitch
but it is slanted. Stem Stitch is a basic
embroidery stitch that is commonly used as
you might have guessed for outlining objects.
This simple stitch creates a smooth, twisted
rope-like line perfect for curves, circles, or
any shape that you want to highlight with an
outline.”
“Again class what is a stem stitch?”
‘Anyone who wants to answer? Ms/Mr”
“The stem stitch is a traditional outline stitch
in hand embroidery. It has a twisted look,
“Very Good!” which gives this stitch a flowing texture.”

G. DEMONSTRATION

“Okay class, let’s start by preparing our

materials: needle, thread, fabric, and
scissors. Cut your thread about as long as
your arm, then thread your needle. If it’s hard
to insert, just wet the tip a little. After that, tie
a knot at the end.”

“I’ll show you two stitches first, then you’ll try

the rest with my guidance.”

“First is the basting stitch. This one is simple.

In and out, like a dashed line. Watch me do a
few stitches

Okay, now it's your turn.”

“Next, the backstitch. I’ll do it slowly forward

once, then back to the last hole. This stitch is
strong and neat. Try to follow along.”

“Alright, the rest of the stitches you’ll try on

your own. I’ll walk around and help you as
you go. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, this is
practice. Just do your best.”

H. DIFFERENTIATION

I will assist learners who are having difficulty

by guiding them step-by-step during practice.

I will pair slow learners with fast learners for

peer assistance.

I will use bigger visual samples for learners

who learn better by seeing.

I will allow learners to ask questions anytime

and approach me while practicing.

I will give extra tasks to fast learners, such as

combining stitches or decorating their work.

I. ANALYSIS

1. “Did you understand the 7 different basic

and common hand stitches and their
procedures?” “Yes, Ma’am”

2. “How many basic hand stitches do we

have?
“7 basic hand stitches”
3. “Is there anyone who wants to enumerate
the 7 basic hand Stitches?”

“Do any of you want to summarize the lesson
