⚫ Question 3 is based on Text C (500–650 words)

⚫ Extended response to reading


You should write 250–350 words in response to the task in which you
modify, use and develop ideas and details from Text C.
⚫ You will be asked to respond using your own words in one of the
following text types: letter, report, journal, speech, interview and article.

15 marks are available for reading, 10 marks for writing

Total marks- 25
Marking Scheme (Reading Component)
⚫ This question tests reading assessment objectives R1, R2 and
R3 (15 marks):
⚫ R1 demonstrate understanding of explicit meanings
⚫ R2 demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and
attitudes
⚫ R3 analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions,
using appropriate support from the text
Marking Scheme (Writing Component)
⚫ This question tests writing assessment objectives W1, W2,
W3, W4 and W5 (10 marks):

W1 articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and
imagined
⚫ W2 organise and structure ideas and opinions for deliberate
effect
⚫ W3 use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures
appropriate to context
⚫ W4 use register appropriate to context
⚫ W5 make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar

⚫ What is a report?

⚫ A report is a systematic, well-organized document which


defines and analyses a subject or a problem, and has a
specific purpose to inform the reader and influence him
subtly. This genre is used for writing on natural, cultural
and social topics.

⚫ Types: Newspaper Report and Formal Report


Features of a Report
⚫ Facts are used so as to keep the report writing objective.
⚫ The report generally moves around one event.
⚫ Events are normally arranged and sequenced in a chronological
order.
⚫ The impersonal passive voice and reported speech are used.
⚫ Reports are written in the past tense or timeless present tense.
⚫ Shorter sentences are used for clarity.
⚫ Formal diction should be used. Jargon and colloquial language
must be avoided.
⚫ It may include personal comments, interpretations and
suggestions in conclusion.

⚫ Understand the topic and analyze it carefully.


⚫ Understand its purpose.
⚫ Research the topic.
⚫ Plan and organize thoughts clearly.
⚫ Keep a record of the research.

and grammar errors.
⚫ Write your final report.
