DYNAMIC-COMPACTION

The document discusses dynamic compaction, a method used to improve soil strength and stability by dropping heavy weights from significant heights. It highlights the effectiveness of this technique for densifying loose sands and silty soils up to 30 feet deep and outlines the factors affecting compaction. Additionally, it provides insights into soil types suitable for dynamic compaction and design considerations for its application.

Soils are compacted for the following reasons:

1. To increase strength and stability

2. To decrease permeability
3. To enhance resistance to erosion
4. Decrease compressibility under load and minimize
settlement
Dynamic compaction

Uses a special crane to lift 5-30 tons to heights of 40

to 100 feet then drop these weights onto the ground .
Cost effective method of densifyingloose sands and
siltysoils up to 15 to 30 feet deep .
Ground Improvement

Using Ground Improvement

Techniques to build directly on
improved grounds as opposed
to deep foundations and or
removal and replacement
techniques
Dynamic Compaction

 Weights from 6 to 30 tons dropped in free fall from heights from 30 to 75 feet
 Conventional compaction from bottom up in lifts 12 inches or less
 Dynamic compaction from the top down
 Conventional Compaction density material from 2 to 4 feet
 Dynamic compaction density material from 15 to 30 feet
Soil Type Use :

• Highly permeable with improved drainage optimal soil.

• Low permeability soil not optimal for standard compaction.
• Intermediate soils (Silt, Clayey Silt, Sandy Silt) not as
receptive to Dynamic Compaction, several passes required.
Design for soil type and ultimate use :

Depth and degree of improvement

Type of structure to be placed on the soil
Design requirements
Weight
Area
Energy to be applied
Grid
Passes
Dynamic Compaction
Dynamic compaction was first used in
Germany in the mid-1930’s.
The depth of influence D, in meters, of
soil undergoing compaction is
conservatively given by
D  ½ (Wh)1/2
W = mass of falling weight in metric tons.
h = drop height in meters
There are 4 control factors affecting the extent
of compaction:1.Compaction effort; 2.soil type
and gradation; 3.moisture content; and 4.dry
unit weight (dry density).
