Earth in space
Ms. Noha

The Sun and the planet Earth:

 The Sun, the Earth and the Moon are 3D shapes
and are approximately spherical.
 Earth is the place where we live.
 The Sun is a star and a source of heat and light.
 Earth's rotation makes it seem as if the Sun is
moving.
 The Earth goes around the Sun.
 It is day when our part of the Earth faces the Sun. It
is night in the part of Earth that faces away from the
Sun.
 People thought that the moon was smooth but in fact
it is rough and rocky.
 The Moon is not a source of light and it doesn’t give
off light but it reflects light from the Sun.
 The Sun is a ball of hot gases.

The Moon:
 Many years ago ancient Greeks and Romans thought
that the Sun, stars and Moon went around (orbited)
the Earth but this wasn’t true as Copernicus and
Galileo studied the Sun and discovered that the
Earth goes around the Sun and the Moon goes
around the Earth.
 The Moon takes 29.5 days to travel around the
Earth. We call that a lunar month.

Phases of the Moon:

 When we look at the changes of the shape of the
Moon from Earth, what we are seeing is how much
of the Moon is lit up by the Sun. This changes night
by night. We call that the phases of the Moon.

A waxing Moon:
A waxing Moon is when the Moon looks as though it is
getting bigger.
A waning Moon:
A waning Moon is when the Moon looks as though it is
getting smaller.
A full Moon:
A full Moon is when the face of the Moon is fully turned
towards the Sun and we can see the whole moon.
A new Moon:
A new Moon is when the face of the Moon points towards
us and is hidden from the Sun, so we hardly see it at all.
