N: The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

N: The elders of the people, chief priests and scribes, arose and brought Jesus before
Pilate. They brought charges against him, saying,

C: "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to
Caesar and maintains that he is the Christ, a king."

N: Pilate asked him,

V: "Are you the king of the Jews?"

N: He said to him in reply,

T: "You say so."

N: Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds,

V: "I find this man not guilty."

N: But they were adamant and said,

C: "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee
where he began even to here."

N: On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean; and upon learning that he
was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at
that time.

Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for
he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.

He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer. The chief priests and
scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.
Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him,
and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate. Herod and
Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies
formerly.

Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people and said to
them,

V: "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt.

I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man
guilty of the charges you have brought against him, nor did Herod,

for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.
Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."

N: But all together they shouted out,

C: "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."

N: _Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the
city and for murder.

_Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus, but they continued their
shouting,

C: "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

N: Pilate addressed them a third time,

V: "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I
shall have him flogged and then release him."

N: With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their
voices prevailed. The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.

So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for
whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.

As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was
coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him,
they made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd of people followed Jesus,
including many women who mourned and lamented him.
Jesus turned to them and said,

T: "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for
your children, for indeed,

the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that
never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'

At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills,
'Cover us!' for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen
when it is dry?"

N: Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the
criminals there,

one on his right, the other on his left. Then Jesus said,

T: "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."

N: They divided his garments by casting lots. The people stood by and watched;
the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said,

C: "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God."

N: Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called
out,

C: "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."

N: Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."
Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying,

V: "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us."

N: The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,

V: "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?

And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received
corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."
N: Then he said,

V: "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

N: He replied to him,

T: "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

N: It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the
afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn
down the middle.

Jesus cried out in a loud voice,

T: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit";

N: and when he had said this he breathed his last.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

N: The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said,

V: "This man was innocent beyond doubt."

N: When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened,
they returned home beating their breasts;

but all his acquaintances stood at a distance,

Narrator:
The elders of the people, chief priests and scribes, arose and

Narrator:
Pilate asked him,
(Philatô hỏi Người:)
Voice (Pilate):
"Are you the king of the Jews?"
“Ông có phải là Vua dân Do Thái không?”

He said to him in reply,

Christ:
"You say so."
“Chính ngài nói đó.”
Narrator:
Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds,
(Philatô liền nói v ới các th ượng t ế và đám đông:)
Voice (Pilate):
"I find this man not guilty."
“Ta không thấy người này có t ội gì c ả.”

But they were adamant and said,
(Nhưng họ cứ khăng khăng nói:)
Crowd:
"He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea,
from Galilee where he began even to here."
“Người này đã khuấy động dân chúng khi gi ảng d ạy kh ắp x ứ
Giuđêa, bắt đầu từ Galilêa cho đ ến đây.”
Narrator:
On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;
and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent
him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.
Nghe nói đến Galilêa, Philatô h ỏi xem ông có ph ải là ng ười x ứ ấy
không. Biết Đức Giêsu thu ộc quy ền cai qu ản c ủa Hêrôđê, ông li ền
gửi Người đến Hêrôđê, lúc đó cũng đang ở Giêrusalem.
Narrator:
Herod was very glad to see Jesus;
he had been wanting to see him for a long time,
for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him
perform some sign.
Hêrôđê rất vui mừng khi th ấy Đ ức Giêsu, vì t ừ lâu ông đã mu ốn
gặp Người, do đã nghe ti ếng Ng ười và hy v ọng th ấy Ng ười làm
một dấu lạ nào đó.
PHẦN 2: HERODE TR Ả V Ề – PHÁN XÉT
Narrator:
He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.
(Ông hỏi Người nhi ều đi ều, nh ưng Ng ười không đáp l ại gì.)
The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him
harshly.
(Các thượng tế và kinh s ư đ ứng đó, t ố cáo Ng ười d ữ d ội.)
Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him,
and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to
Pilate.
(Hêrôđê cùng với lính lác khinh mi ệt và ch ế gi ễu Ng ười. R ồi ông
cho mặc cho Người một áo l ộng l ẫy và g ửi Ng ười l ại cho Philatô.)
Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had
been enemies formerly.
(Ngày hôm ấy, Hêrôđê và Philatô tr ở nên b ạn bè v ới nhau, tr ước
kia họ vẫn thù ghét nhau.)
Narrator:
Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people
and said to them,

Voice (Pilate):
"You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the

I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not

“Các ngươi đã đưa người này đ ến cho ta, cáo bu ộc r ằng ng ười này
xúi dân nổi loạn. Nh ưng ta đã đi ều tra tr ước m ặt các ng ươi và
không thấy người này có t ội gì nh ư các ng ươi t ố cáo. Và c ả
 Hêrôđê cũng vậy, ông ấy đã g ửi tr ả l ại đây. Ng ười này không làm
gì đáng chết. Vậy ta sẽ cho đánh đòn r ồi tha.”
Narrator:
But all together they shouted out,
(Nhưng tất cả họ la lên:)
Crowd:
"Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."
“Hãy giết hắn đi! Tha Baraba cho chúng tôi.”
Narrator:
(Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had
taken place in the city and for murder.)

Narrator:
Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,
but they continued their shouting:
(Lại một lần nữa, Philatô lên ti ếng, mu ốn tha Đ ức Giêsu, nh ưng
họ vẫn cứ la lớn:)
Crowd:
"Crucify him! Crucify him!"
“Đóng đinh nó vào th ập giá! Đóng đinh nó vào th ập giá!”
Narrator:
Pilate addressed them a third time,

Voice (Pilate):
"What evil has this man done?
I found him guilty of no capital crime.
Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."

Narrator:
With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his
crucifixion,
and their voices prevailed.

The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.
(Philatô đành chi ều theo ý h ọ.)
So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and
murder, for whom they asked,
and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.
(Ông tha tên ph ạm nhân h ọ yêu c ầu – k ẻ đã b ị t ống ng ục vì n ổi
loạn và giết người – còn Đ ức Giêsu thì ông trao cho h ọ, theo ý h ọ

Narrator:
As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a
Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying
the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.
(Khi điệu Người đi, họ b ắt m ột ng ười t ừ mi ền quê lên, tên là
Simon, quê ở Xyrênê, và b ắt ông vác th ập giá theo sau Đ ức Giêsu.)
A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who
mourned and lamented him.
(Một đám đông dân chúng đi theo, trong đó có nhi ều ph ụ n ữ than
khóc Người.)
Christ:

Bấy giờ người ta sẽ nói v ới núi non: ‘Hãy đ ổ xu ống trên chúng
tôi!’, và nói với gò n ổng: ‘Hãy ph ủ l ấp chúng tôi đi!’
Vì cây xanh mà ng ười ta còn đ ối x ử nh ư th ế, thì cây khô sẽ ra
sao?”
Narrator:
Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be
executed.
(Kèm theo Người, còn có hai tên gian phi khác b ị đi ệu đi hành
quyết.)
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and
the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.
(Khi đến nơi gọi là “Đ ồi S ọ”, h ọ đóng đinh Ng ười cùng v ới hai tên
gian phi, một tên bên ph ải, m ột tên bên trái.)
Then Jesus said,
(Bấy giờ Đức Giêsu nói:)
Christ:
“Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”
“Lạy Cha, xin tha cho h ọ vì h ọ không bi ết vi ệc h ọ làm.”

Narrator:
They divided his garments by casting lots.

The people stood by and watched;
the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said,
(Dân chúng đứng nhìn, còn các th ủ lãnh thì nh ạo báng:)
Crowd:
“He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the
Christ of God.”
“Hắn cứu được người khác, thì hãy c ứu l ấy mình, n ếu h ắn th ật là
Đấng Kitô của Thiên Chúa, là Ng ười đ ược tuy ển ch ọn!”
Narrator:
Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him
wine they called out:
(Lính tráng cũng ch ế gi ễu Ng ười. Chúng đ ưa gi ấm cho Ng ười
uống và nói:)
Crowd (Soldiers):
“If you are King of the Jews, save yourself.”
“Nếu ông là Vua dân Do Thái thì hãy c ứu l ấy mình đi!”
Narrator:
Above him there was an inscription that read, “This is the King of
the Jews.”
(Phía trên đầu Ng ười có b ản án vi ết: “Ng ười này là Vua dân Do
Thái.”)

Narrator:
The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply:

Then he said,

Voice (Criminal 2):
“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Narrator:
He replied to him,
(Người đáp:)
Christ:
“Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Narrator:
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land

Jesus cried out in a loud voice,

Christ:
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”

And when he had said this he breathed his last.

Narrator:
The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God
and said,

“This man was innocent beyond doubt.”

Narrator:
When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what
had happened,
they returned home beating their breasts;
(Thấy sự việc xảy ra, toàn dân t ụ h ọp đ ấm ng ực tr ở v ề.)
but all his acquaintances stood at a distance,
including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw
these events.
(Còn tất cả những ng ười quen bi ết Đ ức Giêsu, k ể c ả các ph ụ n ữ
đã theo Người từ Galilê, đ ều đ ứng ở đ ằng xa, ch ứng ki ến nh ững
điều ấy.)
