Creating Circle Graphs

A) Fill in the tables below. Show your work.

Best Soccer Player Frequency Fraction Decimal Angle

Lionel Messi 11

Cristiano Ronaldo 11

Jude Bellingham 8

Favourite Breakfast Frequency Fraction Decimal Angle

Pancakes 7

Cereal 5

B) Create a circle graph for each table. Make sure to label your graphs. Use a protractor to measure angles.
Misleading Data - Answer the questions below

A) What makes the second graph misleading?

B) Why would someone create a misleading graph?

C) What are other ways graphs can be made misleading?

Measures of Central Tendency

1. Answer the questions below for this set of data:

15, 16, 16, 20, 22, 22, 23, 27, 28

A) What is the mean (average) of this data set? Show your work.

B) What is the median of this data set? Show your work.

C) What is the mode of this data set?

2. Answer the questions below for this set of data:

8, 12, 14, 19, 9, 16, 15, 17

A) What is the mean (average) of this data set? Show your work.

B) What is the median of this data set? Show your work.

C) What is the mode of this data set?

Outliers

8, 12, 87, 14, 19, 9, 16, 15, 17

A) Identify the outlier in the data set above.

B) How does the outlier impact the mean, median and mode? Explain.

Infographics

A) What are infographics used for? What makes them different from other posters?

B) Why are infographics relevant to Data Management? Explain.

Things to Remember
Frequency
The number of times a category appears in a data set.
Ex: If 10 students prefer dogs, the frequency of dogs is 10.
Total Frequency
The sum of all frequencies in the data set.
Why it matters: You need this number to calculate percentages and angles.
Degrees (°)
Units for measuring angles. A full circle = 360°.
Reminder: Sum of all angles in a pie chart should be 360°.
Percentage (%)
A part of a whole out of 100.
Median
You must ORDER the data set from LEAST to GREATEST
If there are 2 middle numbers, add them together and divide by 2
Mode
If no numbers repeat - there is no mode
If more than 1 number repeats the same amount of times, there will be more than 1 mode

Steps to Create Circle Graphs from a Table of Data:

1. Calculate the total

2. Find the fraction or percentage of each category
3. Convert the answer into a decimal
4. Multiply the decimal by 360º
5. Use a compass to draw a circle
6. Draw a radius line anywhere on the circle (from the centre to the edge of the circle)
7. Use a protractor to measure your first angle using the radius line
8. Continue measuring the angles, using the newest radius line created each time
9. Label each part of the graph and give it a title
