V GROUP OF SCHOOLS, PALLIKARANAI

(2024-25)
CLASS: XII ELECTROSTATICS
TOPIC: ELECTRIC FIELD, ELECTRIC DIPOLE & TORQUE
ONE MARK :

1. Name the physical quantity whose S.I unit is N/C. Is it a scalar or vector quantity?
2. At what point near the electric dipole is the electric field i) parallel ii) anti parallel to
the direction of electric dipole moment?
3. At what position is the electric dipole in uniform electric field in its most unstable
equilibrium position?
4. An electric field line is a continuous curve ie., it cannot have sudden breaks. Why?
5. Draw electric lines of force for i) q > 0 ii) q < 0 ?
6. Draw electric lines of force for an electric dipole.
7. In the following diagram, at which point is the electric field i) maximum and ii)
minimum?

8. Why do the electric field zero inside a charged conductor?

9. The dipole is free to move. What is the action on it, when it is placed in i) a uniform
electric field
ii) non-uniform electric field.
10. Write the expression for the torque acting on an electric field kept in uniform electric
field. Also mention two pairs of perpendicular vectors in the expression.
11. Sketch the electric field lines for a uniformly charged hollow cylinder which is
positively charged.
12. The figure shows tracks of three charged particles in a uniform electrostatic field. Give

the signs of the three charges. Which particle has the highest charge to mass ratio?
13. Write the dimensional formula of i) electric field and ii) electric dipole moment.
Numerical:
TORQUE:

1. An electric dipole with dipole moment 4x10-9 Cm is aligned at 300 with the direction
of a uniform electric field of magnitude 5x104 N/C. Calculate the magnitude of the
torque acting on the dipole.
2. An electric dipole of length 2cm placed with its axis making an angle of 600 to a
uniform electric field of 105 N/C. If it experiences a torque of 8√3 Nm. Calculate the
magnitude of the charge on the dipole and potential energy of the dipole.
3. An electric dipole consists of two opposite charges of magnitude 1/3 x 10-7 C,
separated by 2 cm. The dipole is placed in an external field of 3x107 N/C. What
maximum torque does the electric field exert on the dipole?
ELECTRIC FIELD:
4. Two- point charges of +16 µC and -9µCare placed 8 cm apart in air. Determine the
position of the point at which the resultant field is zero.
5. Two point charges +0.3 C and +0.6 C are placed 0.5 m apart. Calculate the electric
field at i) The midpoint between the charges ii) A point on the line joining the two
charges such that it is 0.05m away from q2 and 0.15 m away from q1.
6. Two- point charges +q and -2q are placed at the vertices B and C of an equilateral
triangle ABC of side ‘a’ as shown in figure. Obtain the expression for i) the magnitude
and the direction of the resultant electric field at the vertex ‘A’ due to these two
charges.

7. Two charges ± 20 µC are placed 10 mm apart. Determine the electric field at a) a pint
P on the axis of the dipole 30 cm away from its centre O on the side of the positive
charge, b) a point Q, 30 cm away from O on a line passing through O and normal to
the axis of the dipole.
8. A charge of magnitude 3e and mass 2m is moving in an electric field E. Calculate the
acceleration imparted to the charge .
9. ABCD is a square of side 5m. Charges of +50 C, -50 C and +50 C are placed at A, C
and D respectively. Find the resultant electric field at B.
10. Four- point charges are placed at the four
corners of a square in the two ways as shown
in figure.
Will the electric field at the centre of the
square, be the same or different in the
configurations and why?
