TIPS FOR USING ACTION VERBS EFFECTIVELY

1. Match verbs to assessment: Choose verbs that align with how you'll assess learning
2. Avoid vague verbs: Replace "understand," "know," and "learn" with specific,
observable verbs
3. Consider progression: Plan objectives that move learners through increasingly
complex cognitive levels
4. Use one verb per objective: Each objective should focus on one specific, measurable
outcome
5. Be realistic: Ensure the cognitive level is appropriate for your learners and timeframe

VERBS TO AVOID IN OBJECTIVES

These verbs are difficult to measure and should be replaced with more specific alternatives:

• Appreciate
• Be aware of
• Be familiar with
• Believe
• Comprehend
• Enjoy
• Feel
• Know
• Learn
• Like
• Perceive
• Realize
• Think
• Understand
• Value

Write: By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to explain three ways recycling

your teaching and help learners understand what they need to achieve.
