The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) has been


allotted ₹125 crore to procure new equip-
ment, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said
on Friday. The announcement came fol-
lowing her visit to the DFS headquarters
on Barakhamba Road.
Ms. Gupta said the fund will allow the
DFS to buy “100 small and special fire
vehicles for areas with narrow lanes”.
The agency will also be equipped with
cutting-edge equipment such as 32-me-
ter turntable ladders and mini fire-fight-
ing robots.
“The fire control room will be
equipped with a computer-aided dis-
patch system, allowing real-time track-
ing of all fire vehicles. Besides, surveil-
lance cameras will be installed in all fire
vehicles,” added the CM.

Meet Eugene Torre, the pioneering Asian GM


who beat Karpov and befriended Fischer
A trailblazer for chess in the continent, Torre changed perceptions by proving he could compete against the world’s best in the 70s
and 80s. In this conversation, he talks about feeling homesick in Europe, becoming a fixture for Philippines at the Olympiad,
working as Fischer’s second, getting the better of World champion Karpov and watching Anand’s rise from across the board

players, did it in 1974. He was also the first Asian
to play at the Candidates, the qualifying event for
the World Championship. He featured in 23
Olympiads for Philippines. He was a friend of the
legendary Bobby Fischer, whom he assisted dur-
ing his 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Ex-
