Heat Exchanger
1. A long thin-walled double-pipe heat exchanger with tube and shell diameters of 1.0 cm and
2.5 cm, respectively, is used to condense refrigerant-134a by water at 200C. The refrigerant
flows through the tube, with a convection heat transfer coefficient of hi = 4100 W/m2K.
Water flows through the shell at a rate of 0.3 kg/s. Determine the overall heat transfer
coefficient of this heat exchanger. Ans: 1856 W/m2K
2. A counter-flow heat exchanger is stated to have an overall heat transfer coefficient based on
an outside tube area of 285 W/m2K when operating at design and clean conditions. After a
period of use, scale built-up in the heat exchanger gives a fouling factor of 0.00035 m2K/W.
Determine (a) the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger and (b) the
percentage change in the overall heat transfer coefficient due to the scale built-up.
3. Steam in the condenser of a steam power plant is to be condensed at a temperature of 50°C
(hfg = 2305 kJ/kg) with cooling water (Cp = 4180 J/kg·°C) from a nearby lake, which enters
the tubes of the condenser at 18°C and leaves at 27°C. The surface area of the tubes is 58
m2, and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 2400 W/m2·°C. Determine the mass flow rate
of the cooling water needed and the rate of condensation of the steam in the condenser. Ans:
101 kg/s, 1.65 kg/s
4. A counterflow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil for a large
industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube (Di = 25
mm) is 0.2 kg/s, while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do = 45 mm) is 0.1
kg/s. The oil and water enter at temperatures of 100 and 300C, respectively. How long must
the tube be made if the outlet temperature of the oil is to be 600C? unused engine oil (Th =
800C = 353 K): cp = 2131 J/kg K, µ = 3.25 × 10-2 N s/m2, k = 0.138 W/m K. water (Tc =
350C): cp = 4178 J/kg K, µ= 725 ×10-6 N s/m2, k = 0.625 W/m K, Pr 4.85. Ans: 65.9 m
