Observation:

Observe the following situations:


Both srilekha and jaya walk in opposite direction from a POINT COUNT THEIR
STEPS with + sign when walking towards right and with – sign when walking towards left.
Jaya has walked 6 steps towards right. This is denoted as +6 and srilekha has walked 6
steps towards left this is denoted as -6.
David has borrowed Rs. 4 from his friend, this can be denoted by -4, from the
above examples we need to extend the whole numbers these numbers are negative
numbers
The numbers with positive (+) symbol are called positive numbers (+7,+3,+10,+2---)
and numbers with negative (-) symbols are called negative numbers (-4,-2,-1,---). There is
no + or – symbol for zero.
The height above the ground is denoted by positive numbers and depth below the
ground level is denoted by negative numbers Earning is denoted by “+” symbol and
expenditure is denoted by “-“ symbol.
From this we come to know that with natural numbers and whole numbers there
are negative numbers also 1,2,3------ are positive numbers and -1,-2,-3------ are negative
numbers.
Integers:
The set of whole numbers together with negative numbers is called integers It is denoted
by I or Z.

There are infinite positive numbers to the right of zero and infinite negative
numbers to the left of zero.

Positive Integers:
The positive are the natural numbers or also called counting numbers these positive
integers are denoted by “Z+” The positive integers lie on the right side of Zero.

• The smallest positive integers is ‘1’.


• The largest positive integer is cant be determined (infinite)

Negative Integers:
The negative integers are the negative of natural numbers these negative of natural

We can make the following observations from the above


i) All the positive integers are greater than zero. Since every positive integer
is right side of zero
ii) “0” is greater than all the negative integers (or) all thew negative integers
are less than “zero” since all the negative integers are left side of zero
iii) Every negative integer is less then every positive integer since every
negative integer is lies on the left of every positive integer
iv) The greater the number the lesser the negative (grater is the number with
negative sign, lesser its value) Example : we know that 7>5 hence -7<-5
We know 8>2 hence -8<-2

Fundamental operations on integers:
I. Addition of Integers:
Rule:1 : The sum of two positive integers is always a positive integers The
addition of 2 positive integers is the same as the addition of 2 whole numbers.
Example: (+2)+(+3) =+5

Rule-2: The sum of two negative integers is always a negative integer in the
addition of two negative integers we simply add both numbers but with the
negative SIGN
Example: (-4)+(-2) =-6

Rule-3: In the addition of a positive integer and a negative integer we generally


subtract smaller number from the greater number and assign the sign of integer
having greater magnitude.
Example: 5+(-8)=-3

5.Additive inverse:
If the sum of any 2 integers is “0” then those two numbers are called
additive inverse of each other.
For ant integer ‘a’ there exits an integer ‘-a’ such that a+(-a)=(-a)+a=0
Here ‘a’ is the additive inverse of ‘-a’ and ‘-a’ is the additive inverse of ‘a’ for
example
i)7+(-7)=7-7=0
Hence 7 is the Additive inverse of -7 and -7 is the additive inverse of 7
ii) 41+(-41) =41-41=0
Hence 41 is the additive inverse of -41 and -41 is additive inverse of 41 .

Subtraction of integers: Subtraction of any two integers a and b is a+(-b) =a-b


the subtraction of integers follows the rules of signs i.e, a-(+b) =a-b
a-(-b)=a+b
It is the some even for addition i.e, a-(+b) = a-b

Solving an equation:-
Solving an equation essentially mean finding a value of the variable which satisfies
the equation
Example: Solve 𝑥-4=7 and verify the result
⇒ 𝑥-4=7
⇒ 𝑥-4+4=7+4[ Adding 4 to both sides of the equation]
⇒ 𝑥 = 11
Hence, 𝑥 = 11 is the solution of the given equation verification:- Substituting 𝑥 =11
in the given equation we get L.H.S =11-4=7

When a number has to multiplied by itself several times it can be expressed in a


special form called exponential form

Addition of integers

When add two positive integers or two negative integers find the sum of their

Subtraction of integers:

Additive inverse
If the sum of two integers is '0' then each are additive inverse of integers

Example: 6+(-6) =0
So, the additive inverse of 6 is -6 and the additive inverse of -6 is 6
Note: -6 and 6 are called opposite integers.

Subtraction: Subtraction is the inverse operation of addition, so to subtract an


integer b from another integer a, add the additive inverse of b to a i.e
a-(b) = a+(-b) ; a-(-b) =a+b

❖ Multiplying a polynomial by a polynomial: -

i) In order to multiply a binomial by another binomial, each term in one binomial is multiplied with
