COURSE INFORMATION
Course Description
This course is intended for student comprehension of Persian beginners level I.
Classes will be conducted entirely in the target language. All aspects of the Persian
language will be studied and practiced, to include: writing, speaking, listening
comprehension and reading comprehension.
The course incorporates a variety of activities and drills including dialogues, reading
texts, role plays, language games, grammar and phonetic exercises, dictations,
translations, interviews and discussion of topics.
By the end of this course, students will be able to participate in a basic conversation (
up to 5 minutes) as well as write simple text (100 to 150 words)."

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
Attendance
This language course requires students to attend class regularly and be on time. Four
unjustified absences will result in the reduction student’s final grade by 10%. Six
unjustified absences the reduction student’s final grade by 30%.
Successful completion of this course requires students to be punctual, actively
participate in class, finish assignments on time and complete all quizzes and exams.
Make-up dates may be arranged only under exceptional circumstances or with an
official letter from the Dean or a doctor.
LEARNING RESOURCES
Dictionaries:
Aryanpour Dictionary (Links to an external site.): a simple online dictionary that
provides Persian to English and English to Persian translation. This source is not
always accurate.
Farsi Dictionary (Links to an external site.): almost identical to Aryanpour Dictionary.
Francis Joseph Steingass Persian-English Dictionary (Links to an external
site.): in use since the 1870's, it is the most complete and concise Persian dictionary.
The collection of definitions is exceptional and has yet to be surpassed. Persian
language and literature scholars retain this dictionary as a principal source for
information.
Other Resources:
University of Texas, Austin's Persian in Texas: a unique and extensive resource for
Persian language learning. Search through it in your spare time. Of particular interest
are the Persian Verb Conjugation and Joining and Disjoining Persian Letters, both
found in "Archived News" on the home page.
