Line measurements refer to the distance between two points along a line, measured in various units from both the metric and imperial systems. Key types of line measurements include length, distance, height, perimeter, circumference, area, and volume, each with specific applications and units of measurement. The document also outlines methods for converting measurements within the metric system through multiplication, division, and decimal movement.

Line Measurements

Line measurements refers to the distance between two points along a line. This can be
measured in various units, such as:

 Metric System: Centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km)

 Imperial System: Inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), miles (mi)

Line measurements are fundamental in geometry and are used to describe the length,
distance, and position of objects.

TYPES OF LINE MEASUREMENT

1. Length

 Refers to the distance between two points on a straight line segment.

 For example, the length

of a pencil, length of a table,
the length of a road.

 Length is typically
measured in units like
centimeters, meter, inches,
or feet.

2. Distance

 Distance is the shortest path between two points, which can be measured
along a straight line or a curved path.

 For example, the distance

between two cities, the
distance you walk to
school, the distance
around a circular track.

 Distance is measured in
the same units as length, such as kilometers, miles, or nautical miles.
3. Height

 Height is the perpendicular

distance from a point or a base
to a line or a plane.

 For example, the height of a

building, the height of a tree,
the height of a triangle.

 Height is measured in units

like meters, feet, or inches.

4. Perimeter

 the total length of all the sides

of a two-dimensional shape.

 For example, the perimeter of a

square, the perimeter of a
rectangle, the perimeter of a
circle (called circumference).

 Perimeter is measured in units

like centimeters, meters, inches,
or feet.

5. Circumstance

 Circumference is the
perimeter of a circle,
specifically the distance
around the circle's edge.

 For example, the

circumference of a pizza, the
circumference of a wheel.

 Circumference is measured
in units like centimeters,
meters, inches, or feet.
6. Area

 Area is the amount of space

a two-dimensional shape
covers.

 It is measured in square
units, such as square inches,
square centimeters, or
square meters.

7. Volume

 Volume is the amount of space

a three-dimensional object
occupies.

 It is measured in cubic units,

such as cubic inches, cubic
centimeters, or cubic meters.

Metric System

Metric System is basically a system used for measuring distance, length, volume, weight
and temperature. It is based on three basic units with which we can measure almost
everything in the world.

Converting Through Multiplication and Division

1. Learn the most common metric prefixes

2. List the prefixes on a line.

3. Determine whether the units you want are larger or smaller than the units you have.

4. Determine the numerical relationship between the units you have and the units you
want.
5. For "large to small" conversions, multiply by the appropriate power of ten.

6. For "small to large" conversions, divide by the appropriate power of ten.

Converting Through Decimal Movement

1. Determine the direction and size of the conversion.

2. Move the decimal point in your measurement.

3. Add zeroes as necessary.
