The SolarWinds® Platform encompasses many disciplines and has the flexibility to help customers with on-
prem, hybrid, and cloud management.
Within the SolarWinds Platform, two broadly defined sub-components are designed to help customers
whether they are fully on-prem, have a hybrid of on-prem and cloud, or are fully cloud-based.
• Product Modules
o Product modules such as SAM, NTA and NPM, to name a few, still are supported on the self-
hosted platform
o Upgrading from the Orion Platform (2020.2.6 and earlier) to the SolarWinds Self-Hosted
Platform is recommended, and running the newer version of the platform while still running
product modules is supported
o The self-hosted platform offers security and performance enhancements over the Orion
Platform, along with new features
With SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted, customers who are fully on-prem or have an on-prem and self-
hosted hybrid environment can monitor their complete infrastructure. SolarWinds Observability SaaS
running on the SaaS Platform supports customers working in a hybrid environment with cloud dev-ops and
fully cloud-native environments.
• Platform Connect
o Feature of SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted that “connects” SolarWinds Observability Self-
Hosted to SolarWinds Observability SaaS for unified visibility and function
o Allows you to import network and self-hosted entity data from your SolarWinds Observability
Self-Hosted installation to SolarWinds Observability SaaS and monitor both environments in a
single web interface
o Utilize AIOps and machine learning technologies found in the SaaS Platform to significantly
improve the intelligence of your SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted alert triggers by using
anomaly-based alerting logic
o Anomaly-based alerts follow the defined trigger conditions but also use machine learning to
“learn” the entity behaviour to determine whether the behaviour is anomalous for an entity
• Product Integrations
o Products currently integrated are still supported and can integrate with SolarWinds
Observability Self-Hosted, as well as module installations on the self-hosted platform
o SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted also enhances security integrations with the addition of
integration points for Security Event Manager (SEM) and Access Rights Manager (ARM)

System Requirements
SolarWinds Self-Hosted Platform System Requirements

SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted requires a minimum SQL Server version of Microsoft SQL Server
2016 SP1.
Network Discovery
When you log in to the SolarWinds Self-Hosted Platform Web Console for the first time, you’ll be directed to
the Network Discovery Wizard.
Troubleshooting the Network Using the SolarWinds Self-Hosted Platform Web Console
• Top 10 critical statistics across installed products can be found in the Home menu, while the Top 10
for network monitoring alone can be found in the Network menu
• Click and drill down to find more details about nodes, interfaces, and volumes
• Gauges give you the current data as of the last polling, and charts provide you with historical data
Account Permissions
You can assign accounts with various permissions on the SolarWinds Self-Hosted Platform Web Console.

Group Objects
A group is a collection of monitored objects, such as a group of nodes at the same location or a group of all
nodes owned by a department. You can also include groups in other groups.

Account Limitations
Accounts can be configured with account limitations to control which objects are viewable across the Self-
Hosted Platform Web Console.

Node Dependencies
Node dependencies allow you to designate a node on which other nodes depend (e.g., a forward-facing
router other devices sit behind). If this router goes down, the machines behind it aren’t necessarily down
but are unreachable. Dependencies allow you to have this level of precise monitoring, alerting, and web
console visualization for accurate status monitoring.

Additional Benefits
• The agent encrypts and compresses data before transmission
• The agent communicates on specific, user-defined ports
• The agent runs independently of the SolarWinds Platform server
