Unit 1

Chapter 1: Family Relationships

Lesson 1

Text 1: Blood is Thicker Than Water

A. “Blood is thicker than water” means that family is very important. Many young people like
spending time with friends more than with family. They might even choose to skip family events,
like visiting a grandparent or going to a cousin’s wedding. But they might miss out on good
times with family!

B. In places like Asia, South America, and Africa, many children live with grandparents, aunts,
or uncles. This is called an extended family. But in Europe, Australia, and North America, not as
many kids live with their big families. Could this mean some children miss out on the help of
family members?

C. Family members help children in many ways. For example, grandparents have more time to
read stories or play games. They’re often patient and kind because they have learned a lot.
Grandparents can also help with problems that children face.

D. It’s good for kids to learn from grandparents. They can hear stories about the past and learn
to be kind and helpful. Sometimes kids feel close to their grandparents, even more than their
parents.

E. Some young people think living alone will be fun, but it can also be lonely. Staying with family
helps them feel supported. They can also save money for college or their future.

F. If grandparents live far away, kids can still talk to them by phone or computer. It’s nice to
know there’s someone to help when things are hard. There’s even a saying, “If things aren’t
going well, call your grandma!”

G. Friends are special, but family will always be there. Grandparents won’t be around forever,
so it’s important to enjoy time with them while we can.

Unit 2

Chapter 1: Animals and their habitats

Lesson 1:

Text 1: Animals and Their Habitats

Animals are incredible creatures that live in many places around the world. Their
homes, called habitats, are where they find food, water, and shelter. Each habitat is

different, and animals must adapt to survive in their environment.

1. Forest Habitat: Forests are filled with tall trees, bushes, and many animals. Bears,

deer, and owls all call the forest home. Birds build their nests high in the trees to stay

safe, and insects like bees and butterflies are busy gathering nectar from flowers.

2. Desert Habitat: Deserts are hot and dry places with very little water. Camels are

famous desert animals that store water in their bodies to survive the heat. Other

creatures, like scorpions, come out only at night when it’s cooler. Plants like cacti
grow

here because they can store water for a long time.

3. Ocean Habitat: Oceans cover most of the Earth and are full of life. Whales and

dolphins swim in deep waters, while colorful fish live near coral reefs. Sea turtles,

jellyfish, and crabs are just a few examples of the diverse creatures that live in this

watery world.

4. Grassland Habitat: Grasslands are wide, open spaces with tall grasses and few

trees. Animals like lions, zebras, and giraffes live here in groups called herds. The

grasses help protect smaller animals like rabbits and snakes from predators by giving

them a place to hide.

5. Arctic Habitat: The Arctic is cold and covered in ice and snow. Polar bears and

seals live here, surviving with thick fur or blubber to keep them warm. Arctic foxes

and snowy owls blend into the snowy environment with their white fur and feathers,

which helps them stay safe.

Animals depend on their habitats for survival. They use the resources around them to

stay healthy, grow, and raise their young.

Text #2

Camouflage

Animals have special ways to survive in the places they live. One way they do this

58

is through camouflage. Camouflage helps an animal blend into its surroundings so

that other animals cannot see it. This makes it easier for them to hide from predators
or to sneak up on their prey.

Some animals change their color to match the season. For example, a snowshoe

hare has brown fur in the summer, but it turns white in the winter to blend in with the

snow. Other animals, like chameleons, change their colors to match the leaves or

sand where they live. This helps them stay safe from predators.

Other animals pretend to look like something else. A stick insect looks like a twig,

which makes it hard to spot. Predators might not even notice it! Even some predators

use camouflage to help them hunt. For example, a snake’s pattern can help it hide in

the rainforest so it can surprise its prey.

Camouflage is one way animals survive in their habitats. It helps them stay hidden,

stay safe, and find food.

The Walking Stick Bug

Walking stick bugs are amazing insects that look just like sticks! This is called
mimicry,

which is a type of camouflage. Mimicry helps them hide from animals that might

want to eat them, called predators. Walking sticks live in forests where there are lots

of branches and leaves. They spend most of their time on trees or under twigs.

Here’s a cool fact: walking stick bug eggs look like tiny plant seeds! Most walking

sticks are less than 5 inches (13 cm) long, but the biggest one lives in Borneo and is
13

inches (33 cm) long! Scientists have discovered about 3,000 different kinds of walking

stick bugs.

The Walking Stick Escape

One day, all the walking stick bugs were gone! I had forgotten to close the lid on their

cage before going to school. Luckily, I got home before my mom and sister. I had

about 30 minutes to find the walking sticks and put them back before they noticed.

I started looking everywhere. Walking stick bugs use camouflage to hide, so I knew

they would be hard to spot. Even though we don’t have trees in our apartment, we

do have house plants. I checked the big plant by the door and found one! Then I

checked the plants in the living room and found three more. That meant one bug was
still missing.

I kept looking, but time was running out. Finally, I spotted something strange on the

napkin holder on the dining room table. I had made it at camp out of sticks! There

was the last walking stick bug, hiding on one of the sticks. I carefully picked it up and

placed it back in the cage. Phew! I learned that you have to think like a walking stick

bug to find one

Homework:
Asian Elephants

Deep in the forests and grasslands of Southeast Asia, you can hear buzzing insects

and chirping birds. Suddenly, a group of Asian elephants stomps through the tall

grass to reach a watering hole. They spray water over their backs and splash around.

It’s bath time for these gentle giants!

Asian elephants are a little smaller than African elephants but can still grow very big.

They can be up to nine feet tall (almost as tall as a basketball hoop!) and weigh as

much as six tons. That’s heavier than two cars! Even baby elephants, or calves, weigh

around 200 pounds when they are born. Asian elephants eat a lot—up to 300 pounds

of food every day, including grass, fruits, roots, and tree bark.

Asian elephants spend most of their day looking for food. They may walk up to 50

miles to find enough to eat. They love to cool off by splashing in water or spraying

themselves with their trunks. Their trunks work like hoses, making it easy to stay cool

in the heat.

These elephants live together in groups called herds. A herd is made up of female

elephants and their young. The adult males usually live on their own. Asian elephants
are very social. They communicate, or share information, with each other by making

loud rumbles and growls. Sometimes their sounds can travel more than a mile. That’s

Chapter 2: Insects

Lesson 1:

#Text 1: All About Insects

What is an insect? Insects are small creatures often called bugs, like flies, bees, and

butterflies. There are over one million types of insects on Earth! They live all around us

in places like forests, gardens, and even our backyards. Insects come in many shapes,

sizes, and colors. They are very adaptable and can live in all kinds of habitats.

Insects are the largest group of animals on Earth. All insects have three body parts: a

head, a thorax (the middle part), and an abdomen (the back part). They also have

six legs and most of them have wings.

Some insects help us. For example, bees help plants grow by moving pollen from one

flower to another. This is called pollination. Bees also give us honey. Ladybugs eat

tiny bugs that harm plants. These insects are helpful, or beneficial.

Other insects can hurt people or plants. Some bite or sting, like fire ants or mosquitoes.

These insects can also spread diseases like malaria. Some insects destroy crops,

which are plants that farmers grow for food, like wheat and corn.
Even though some insects are harmful, they are very important to nature. They help

keep plants, animals, and people healthy.

Dogs That Help Some dogs are trained to help people with disabilities. These dogs are
called service dogs. But not all helpful dogs are service dogs. Some dogs give
emotional support to people who feel sad or worried. These dogs help their owners feel
calm and happy just by being with them. Emotional support dogs do not need special
training. Their job is to love and comfort their owners. Therapy dogs are different. They
visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, or schools to bring comfort. A therapy dog
might cuddle with a sick child one day and listen to a student practice reading the next
day. A Day in the Life of a Service Dog Hi! My name is Jake, and I have a very special
job! I take care of my favorite person, Callie. Callie uses a wheelchair because her legs
don’t work. I help her do things she can’t do on her own. In the morning, I turn on the
lights in Callie’s room and bring her clothes to her. After breakfast, we go to school. At
school, I open doors, pick up things Callie drops, and get things she can’t reach. Recess
is my favorite time! Callie lets other kids pet me during recess, but only when I’m not
working. When I’m working, I have to focus on helping Callie. After school, I take a nap.
Then I go for a walk with Mom and Luna, another dog. Luna doesn’t have a job like me,
but she’s still fun to play with! After dinner, I work with Callie until bedtime. I love Callie
and my job. It makes me happy to help her every day!

Text 3: My life as a Seizure Alert Dog

My Life as a Seizure Alert Dog

Hi! My name is Alo, and I am a seizure alert dog. My best friend is Liyana, and I help

her because she has epilepsy. Along with being her buddy, my job is to stay close to

her and keep her safe.

My Important Job

Since I was a puppy, I’ve always been on the job, day and night. I can tell when Liyana

is going to have a seizure a minute or two before it happens. Even if I’m asleep, I

know when she needs me. I always stay focused and don’t let anything distract me,

like birds or other dogs. Liyana is really proud of me.

When I bark, Liyana’s parents know to come and help. I also carry special medicine

that helps her during a seizure. At school, I don’t bark because it might disturb the

other kids. Instead, I press a button on the floor that sends a message to Liyana’s
teacher and nurse through their watches.

This Amazing Girl

You might think I’m smart, but my best friend Liyana is truly amazing! She is a teenager

and already an award-winning dancer. She can do all kinds of dance, and I always

cheer her on from backstage.

When she’s not dancing, Liyana helps others. She and her family started a toy drive

for kids with epilepsy. It became so big that it’s now a foundation! She gives toys to

kids all over the country.

A Big Adventure

I could talk about Liyana all day, but I have to go now because we have an important

trip coming up. We are going to Boston for her next surgery. I’ve been practicing at

the airport, learning how to go through security and get on a plane.

I can’t wait to meet her doctors and nurses. I will stay by her side in the hospital and

make sure she feels safe and happy!

Text: A Service Dog’s Important Job If you see a dog in a grocery store, it is probably a
service dog. Service dogs are allowed to go wherever their handlers go. They are trained
to help people with disabilities. They can be trained to do many tasks. They must also
be well-behaved at all times. That is why it takes at least two years to train a service
dog. Not all service dogs are trained to do the same things. A service dog that is trained
to help someone who is blind will be able to keep its handler from bumping into things.
It may also be trained to stop at curbs to keep its handler safe from traffic. Service dogs
can even be trained to find public bathrooms. A service dog that is trained to help
someone with mobility issues may be able to turn on lights. It may also be able to open
and close doors, get objects, and pull a wheelchair. You should never try to pet a service
dog unless the handler says it is okay. Even if it looks like the dog is not working, it is
still on duty. But don’t worry, service dogs get time off too. They get time to play with
other dogs, play fetch, and snuggle with family members.

Hobbies
Hobbies are simply anything you do that’s for fun. The activity isn’t something you are getting
paid to do, rather something you enjoy doing in your free time that helps you relax and connect
with other people.
For a lot of people these days it seems like their only leisure activities are watching television
and catching up on Facebook. That’s a shame, because hobbies—from rock climbing to
collecting silver spoons—can have real benefits.
Of course everyone is different and your personality does play a role in what sorts of hobbies
you like. If you don’t have a lot of patience you might feel like quilting would be too much for
you, but exploring quick sewing projects might be a better choice.
Maybe you really like hanging out with friends, so you need to take a class or have an interest
that you can do with a group. If you travel a lot, something portable or that you can take with
you anywhere is helpful; if you like to stay at home, you might love to have a cool collection.
Think about the things you already like and how they might expand. If you’re always ordering
fun drinks, maybe you could learn to make some at home. If you can’t resist the colors in the
paintings at your favorite restaurant, perhaps you should pick up some paint or a camera and
explore color.
The truth is you may not select the perfect activity for you right away but you can have a lot of
fun trying out new things and exploring what’s out there. Do some web searches, visit the
library, don’t be afraid to try new things, and soon you’ll have a hobby that provides you with a
lot of fun and stress relief, too.

Not Shy When Dancing
By: Erik Halkjaer (adapted)
Yen is often shy, but when she’s dancing or practicing karate she feels self-confident and strong.
It takes ages to choose the music. Yen argues with her friends Nga and Phuoc about which South
Korean pop star is best. In the end they agree on more traditional Vietnamese music and start
dancing the ‘hat dance’ to the music, while making special movements with their hats.
This is where Yen retreats to – the world of music and dance – when she wants to get away
from it all. She’s been living at the children’s home at Duc Son pagoda since the age of seven.
She loves the nuns and her friends, but she often dreams of a life somewhere else.
“Would you like to dance?” asked one of the nuns.
“I can try,” replied Yen.
The nuns helped Yen and her friends to put their hair up in pretty styles and put make-up on, so
they almost looked like dolls. They wore Áo dài, lovely silk dresses. When the music started,
Yen couldn’t keep still. She just felt she had to move. She watched the nuns, who showed her
how to move with the music.
Soon the girls were performing for the other children. It was exciting, and they were nervous.
But when the music started, Yen didn’t see the audience. She only heard the music, and
followed the dance steps she had learned.
“I feel free. I’m not bothered by the audience,” said Yen.
She told the nuns how much she loved dancing. She practiced every week with her friends. She
dreamed of getting into a dance academy. As Yen grew up she started daydreaming more and
more. When she wasn’t dancing, she started painting and doing karate.

Becoming a pop star is a dream for many people, but it takes hard work and dedication. At first,
performers might feel nervous when singing in front of a large audience. The bright lights and
many people watching can be scary. However, with lots of practice, they start to feel more self-
confident.

To get ready for big shows, many stars go on a short retreat. During these retreats, they can
relax and focus on their music without distractions. This time away helps them feel better and
stay excited about their work. By practicing hard and believing in themselves, future pop stars
