VAN DIJK: THE STRUCTURE OF NEWS

Empezo en los 60. He and a psicologo he developed a theory of text comprehension, a

theory with massive consensus, meaning that the theroty accounts to how we interpret text,
not only as a theoretical. There is empirical evidence that supports it. Es de los 60 y 70 este
trabajo.
En los 90 empezo a trabajar en la relationship bet lang and power, critical discourse
analysis. Worked in how discourses, powerful ones, affect discrimination. Main interest in the
90s.
NEWS SCHEMATA, NEWS DISCOURSE Y ALGO MAS, lo importante es la seguda
parte del chap.
News schemata/superstructure/schematic structure: mean the same. The structure where
the info is given in, how news are organized and presented.

Element always present in the superstructure of news: headline, the lead (a first sentence
that coincides usually with the first paragraph that summarises the whole news), most
important info about the story. Then we have the events. Then optional categories.
Most important info first, less important last.
What we are seing is the lead, a long sentence, a complex structure. The lead contains the
main info about the event. Here we have actors, place and time (when and where), the
source (health ministry), a previous event.
EJERCICIO DEL CAMPUS:

News story published in an African newspaper of England algo asi.

We have a headline and a lead (in this case it coincides with the first paragraph). We have
there the place, the time, main action.
In the second paragraph we have further detail, more info about the actors and some
context (busy highway).
3rd paragraph: further detail on the actor (20 people including…) and some verbal reactions
(condolences of the governor).
4th paragraph: comment
What can we say of news schema: we have the headline, the lead, main events, some
optional categories such as expectatios, evaluations.
SECOND KEY IN THE CHAPTER: NEWS STYLE!!!!!!
It is definitely formal, public, impersonal, the sentence structure is complex, a lot of
imbedding bc a lot of info is packed in a small amount of sentences.
Deadlines have a great influence in the style of news, si tenes opco tiempo para escribir will
impact the style, and we will have formulaic language and routinized sintax.
It is monological, no interaction, its written.
2. lot of presuppodsed knowledge.
4. economy, sports, etc
5. making the processes economical: nominalization a lot, to represent whole processes, like
“a lot of people have loss their jobs”.
NEWS RETHORIC!!
Ways of getting sth done with language, we have a certain goal we want to achieve. The
main communicative purpose of news is the effect of verisimilitude/truthfulness. We read
news for the info, but news purpose is to make us believe what we are reading. News seeks
to persuade that the content is basically true.

Integrated with our mental models. How does news do that?

Events are facts, objective, opposed to opinion. Dato no opinion. Lot of factual info, hard
facts.

This relevant principle etc make the news more impactfull, more memorable, more easily
integrated in our mental models.

In the piece we just read the words that were emotially loaded would be for ex. Inferno.
The hard facts: where it happened, the relational structure (with the previous events and
etc), the sources (mayor, governor) can lead us? To the rethorical effect of news. To the
effect it wants to achieve.
News aims at being noticed, memorable, believed (most important). News seek to appear as
true and there are different ways of achieving this effect of verisimilitude, one emphasizing
etccc
