Instructions: From this tutorial sheet, students are required to answer and sub-
mit the following questions as group assignment :
8(b), 9 , 13, 14(b), 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

Surds

1. What is the difference between pure and mixed surds? Give an example for
each. Convert each of the following to a mixed surd

(a) 200

(b) 18

(c) 5 64

2. Convert each of the following to a pure surd

(c) 4 2

3. State the laws of surds (at least four of them) that you know and apply each
of them.(Use your own examples)

4. Express 3 625 in the form a 3 b, in the simplest form where a and b are
rational numbers.
√ √
5. Express 6 × 5 in the form p, where p is an integer.
√ √
6. Express 7 4 3 in the form 4 p, where p is an integer.

7. Arrange in ascending order: 2, 3 and 6 5

8. Rationalize the denominator in the following expressions:

12. Express 3 2−5 6
in the form a + b c, where a, b, and c are rational numbers.
State the values of a, b, and c.

13. Given that x = 1 + 2, express x + x1 in the form a + b c, where a, b, and c
are rational numbers.

Absolute Value (Modulus) Functions

14. Prove that for all x, y, z ∈ R

(a) |xy| = |x||y|.

(b) |x + y| ≤ |x| + |y|.

(c) |x − y| = |y − x|.

(d) |x + y + z| ≤ |x| + |y| + |z|.

15. A delivery drone is flying along a straight path modeled by the function:

d(t) = |2t − 6|

where d(t) represents the drone’s distance from its warehouse (in km) after
t minutes.

(a) Express d(t) as a piecewise function

(b) Find the domain and range of d(t).

(c) Sketch the graph of d(t).

(d) At what time(s) is the drone 10 km away from the warehouse?

(e) When is the drone closest to the warehouse?

(f) Calculate the time range for which the minimum distance between the
drone and its warehouse is 4km.
16. Mike who is MAT 1310’s class representative has a company whose profit (in
thousand Kwacha) is given by the function:

P (x) = |7x − 35|

where x represents the number of products (in hundreds) sold.

(a) Express P (x) as a piecewise function

(b) Find the domain and range of the company’s profit function.

(c) Sketch the graph of company’s profit function.

(d) How many products must be sold to make zero profit?

(e) Find the number of products needed to be sold for P (x) ≤ 21

17. Mr. Kafunda designed office tables for Eden University and recommended
that they should have length = 200cm, width = 100cm and height = 15cm,
but due to manufacturing variations, the actual height is given by:

h = 15 + |e|

where e is the error in cm.

(a) Express the acceptable height range using a modulus function if the
error is between −0.3 cm and +0.3 cm.

(b) Find the domain and range of h(e).

18. The deviation of temperature in the auditorium from a normal room tem-
perature of 22°C is given by the function:

T (t) = |22 − t|
where T (t) is the actual temperature in the auditorium at time t hours.

(a) Find the domain and range of T (t).

(b) Sketch the graph of T (t).

(c) At what times does the temperature drop below 10°C in the auditorium?

(d) When does the temperature reach exactly 12°C in the auditorium?

19. A student in the School of Natural Sciences modeled the velocity of a bounc-
ing tennis ball in the Chapel as:

v(t) = |t2 − 16|

where v(t) is the velocity in m/s at time t.

(a) Find the domain and range of v(t).

(b) Sketch the graph of v(t).

(c) At what time(s) is the velocity equal to zero?

(d) Find the value(s) of t for which v(t) ≤ 9
