ABSTRACT

COVID pandemic has brought worldwide lockdown to every Filipino. Everyone is

isolated from physical interaction to further mitigate the disease. People are prohibited to go

out and meet with their friends to have fun and catch up. Along with the rigid health

protocols implementation, it resulted in abrupt lifestyle changes, people are obliged to stay at

home with their families and pets. Pets are known to be a human’s companion and friend.

With this, the researchers wanted to find out the effects of having pets on humans during the

COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers wanted to determine how pets affect the emotional,

mental, social, and physical health of humans. The researchers conducted interviews on the

participants chosen through purposive sampling method via Zoom for data collection. After

an in-depth analysis. The researchers were able to come up with three (3) significant themes.

These themes are the following: Experience of humans; Emotions brought by pet to Humans;

and Characteristics of pets. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend to widen the

scope of the studies and the study must be open for all regardless of age. Lastly, the

researcher also suggests focusing on a specific type of pet (dog, cat, fishes, and etc.) for it

might be a factor in the variation of effects in the pet owner depending upon the type of pet

they have.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Companionship with animals has benefited a lot in health and well-being for

centuries. According to Rodriquez (2021), several studies based on empirical data show the

impacts of pets on people's welfare. During the 1980s, influential investigations reported that

pet owners had a lower mortality rate. Interactions with dogs can also decrease blood

pressure and levels of physiological stress. In a 2016 survey, Human-Animal Bond Research

Institute (HABRI) stated that nearly 70% of household pet owners improved their mental and

physical health. The dynamic relationship of both owners and pets is mutually beneficial to

their behaviors under such circumstances.

On the other hand, almost two years ago, the World Health Organization declared the

SARS Corona Virus outbreak ("COVID-19") a threat to global public health. In March 2020,

a national broadcast from the government covered new quarantine and lockdown protocols

that shocked the entire nation. As stay-at-home decreed, it became stern for Filipinos to

continue living their lives normally. Due to the abrupt lifestyle changes, many people stayed

at their respective homes. Younger ages to older adults have limited their engagement with

worthwhile activities that could probably cause psychosocial issues. But, how did most of the

population cope with these adjustments during the pandemic? That is why Human-Animal

Bond became an interest to perspective while spending more time indoors.

During isolation due to lockdowns and social distancing, pets provided a lot of

specific benefits to most of the pet owners here in the country. In the absence of physical

contact from other important people, especially those who live alone, pet companionship
2

fulfils needs and provides comfort. It is essential to know how these affect human loneliness,

emotional support, and extensive alteration to internal and external characteristics. Recent

research proposed to consider how attachment bonds of pets and humans supply gaps to

emerging psychological problems brought by this new normal.

Background of the Study

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people had to immediately adapt to severe

changes in their lives as a result of the virus's containment efforts. The government was

forced to impose social interaction limits to prevent the continuous rise of affected cases.

Social isolation was a result of community quarantine guidelines that lasted for a couple of

months. Due to this, many lives had been disrupted by the pandemic and a sense of personal

loss has emerged. Distance from loved ones, grief, and a lone mentality led to an increase in

such mental health issues. Communities around the globe experienced soaring rates of

anxiety, depression, loneliness, post-traumatic stress, and even worse, suicidal ideations

(Kogan, L., Currin-McCulloch J., Bussolari C., Packman W., Erdman P., 2021). The research

was conducted about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and it was

confirmed that Filipino respondents reported significantly higher levels of depression,

anxiety, and stress. This is due to student status, low confidence in doctors, dissatisfaction

with health information, long daily duration spent on health information, worries about

family members contracting COVID-19, ostracization, and unnecessary worries about

COVID-19 were associated with adverse mental health.

A perceived lack of support during the beginning months of the urging pandemic has

been associated with depression cases. However, it is found that due to imposed limits to
3

social interaction and being advised to stay at home, many of us relied on our animal

companions and other domestic pets. Before the pandemic, it is recorded that there were

approximately 10 million domestic pets here in the Philippines. It is found that the bonds that

Filipinos create with companion animals are important in providing security, safety, and

decreased loneliness during these trying times. Numerous bodies of research have proved that

the domestic animals we have in our homes like dogs, cats, and other pets offer numerous

benefits that are comparable with human-human interactions. In fact, many of our population

value their relationships with their dogs or cats just like their family members. It is not

surprising that the deep attachment we built with our domestic pets can aid problems in

anxiety and depression caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even if newly imposed forms of mental health services were created to help

difficulties in the said issue, it is still not enough due to the high demand for mental health aid

from more individuals reporting unmet needs. Given the strong connections between people

and their companion domestic pets and the potential benefits of having them, we, the

researchers, would like to know the effects of having dogs, cats, and other pets as

companions to owners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Review of Related Literature

In 2020, the Philippines has one of the most alarming outbreaks on COVID-19 in

entire Southeast Asia. Also, the country has one of the highest fatality rates in the region,

highlighting the weakness of its increasingly strained public health system. According to the

World Health Organization, the actual number of infected could be in the tens of thousands,

if not higher, making the Philippines one of Asia's most dangerous hot spots. President
4

Duterte declared a month-long lockdown in Metro Manila and surrounding areas (March 15

to April 14). For days, the precise contours of the lockdown—dubbed "community

quarantine" at first, then "enhanced community quarantine." Everyone is caged at the end of

their homes, and a limited number of residents are allowed to go out to prevent further close

contact with each other (WHO,2020).

According to the study, one of the potential mechanisms that According to the study,

one of the potential mechanisms postulated to explain the link between pet ownership and

human health advantages consists in the fact that there is no real connection between the two,

but rather cofactors such as personality traits, age, and economic factors or health status

impact on the decision to own a pet and thus produce an apparent link between pets and

health (McNicholas et al., 2005)

According to Brooks et al. (2016), pets were implicated in relational work because

they provided secure and personal ties that could not be found anywhere else. Pets should be

considered a primary rather than a secondary form of assistance in managing long-term

mental health issues, which has consequences for mental health service planning and

implementation.

According to Archer, J. (1997), the mechanisms that allow pets to elicit caregiving

from humans are described in detail. They include aspects that give initial appeals, such as

neotenous characteristics and features that allow the human owner to get ongoing pleasure

from engaging with the pet, such as attributing mental processes to human-like organisms.

These mechanisms can, in some instances, cause pet owners to be more satisfied with their
5

pet relationships than with human relationships because they provide a sort of unconditional

love that is usually lacking in human relationships.

Children and youths are less vulnerable to COVID-19 but highly exposed to

biophysical stressors. The pandemic causes this, and once the containment measures are

required to reduce the spread of the virus, it would affect their daily life routine, which is

caused by social isolation and the failure to accept and understand the consequences of this

pandemic (Spinelli et al., 2020; Crescentini et al., 2020). Although, even after the sudden

drastic change because of the closure of schools and the prohibition of outdoor activities,

children and adolescents are not entirely isolated. There are cases where their parents are also

at home. This allows them to compensate by spending more time with their family members.

They can also compensate by using social media. (Guessoum et al., 2020; Keles et al., 2020).

Since children are away from friends and school, they will be filled with questions about this

pandemic. They will seek answers, and they will not have the same response to the pandemic.

Children and adolescents do not respond to stress the same way. They can experience

anxiety, distress, social isolation, and an abusive environment that can have short‐ or

long‐term effects on their mental health (Liu et al., 2020 ).

People of old age are more prone to getting infected with COVID-19 due to their

weaker immune systems and pre-existing health conditions. According to experts in the

medical field, people aged 60 and above are more likely to get infected with the virus. They

can develop severe and life-threatening symptoms (Armitage et al., 2020). Studies have

already reported increased anxiety and depression in the general population because of this

outbreak (Ahmed et al., 2020; Meda et al., 2020). The elderly population magnified this
6

increase because of the strict lockdown, a higher chance of getting sick, and less social

support (Yang et al., 2020 ). Studies before have also shown that even without the pandemic,

the elderly are more prone to depressive symptoms (Djernes, J. K. (2006); Li et al., 2014),

which is alarming for people who have evidence of suffering pre-existing mental health

conditions prior to this pandemic (Hao et al., 2020).

Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) is a broad word that encompasses any relationship

or interaction between a human and a non-human animal. Even though humans have

coexisted with animals for thousands of years, Human-Animal Interaction research is recent.

The Human-Animal bond characterized as a mutually beneficial interaction between people

and animals that improves their health is one aspect of HAI.

Human-animal interactions are often related to a wide range of deep relationships

shared between the pets and their owners. According to Bayer, a life science company, the

Human-Animal bond has evolved for more than 15,000 years where it began as a working

relationship. However, there has been unprecedented development of research into human-

animal interaction (HAI) in recent years that produced rapid growth in our knowledge and

understanding of the benefits of pet ownership (McCune et al., 2014). More importantly, its

significance during the pandemic has been of increasing interest.

According to Ratschen et al. (2020), observational studies suggest that interactions

and connections with companion animals may benefit human health and well-being, for

example, through postulated mechanisms and the animal's attachment to or companionship. It

shows that living with companion animals or pets may provide welfare to their owners'

condition throughout the pandemic. For example, having access to a perceived source of
7

unconditional support, love, comfort, security, and stability can lessen feelings of loneliness

and stress (Ratschen et al., 2020). Not just to humans, similar research proved that Human-

Animal Interactions have positive results for some of the animals' physical and mental

aspects. These interactions are exceptionally essential to both parties in coping with the

concerns and risks brought by the pandemic.

According to Brooks et al. (2018), pet ownership has mixed effects on owners,

including positive, negative, and neutral impacts. Pets contributed to the work related to

dealing with mental health conditions, especially amid crises. The negative aspects of having

a pet include practical and emotional burdens and the psychological effect of losing one.

According to the study, pet owners had much stronger self-efficacy, reflecting an

individual's perceived ability to effectively cope with problems (Grajfoner et al., 2021). As

per a study in the UK that evaluated the effects of COVID-19 focusing on mental stability

and health in both pet owners and pets, having a companion animal can boost physical

activity during social isolation, leading to improved satisfaction and positive moods

(Shoesmith et al., 2021). According to previous studies, animal ownership effectively reduces

some of the negative psychological impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United

Kingdom (Ratschen et al., 2020) and Spain (Bowen et al., 2020).

8

As per a study, animal ownership has been shown to benefit individuals, including

improved mental health outcomes such as decreased anxiety (Likourezos et al., 2002), stress

reduction, improved quality of life, increased social and community involvement (Brooks et

al., 2018; Wood et al., 2015), and coping with difficult situations (Ratschen et al., 2020;

Bowen et al., 2020). According to Wood et al. (2015), pet owners were significantly more

likely than non-pet owners to get to know their neighbors.

Multiple studies, on the contrary, have identified detrimental impacts of animal

ownership, along with an increased risk of depression (Mueller et al., 2018) and a fall in

mental health (Enders-Slegers et al., 2019; Gilbey et al., 2015).

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to know the Effects of Living with Pets on Humans during

the COVID-19 Pandemic

Specifically, this research is designed to answer the following questions:

1. What type of feelings do people have when they are with their pets?

2. How much did their pets help them: (1) physically, (2) emotionally, and (3) mentally

during the pandemic?

3. What are the effects of having pets: (1) physically, (2) emotionally, and (3) mentally?
9

4. What are the pro-factors or benefits of having a pet during a pandemic?

5. Is having a pet a good room for an escape from distress?

Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of this qualitative study is to:

a. Identify how pets can help in coping with the sadness and stress of being alone during

the COVID-19 pandemic.

b. How do humans feel whenever they are with their pets?

c. Determine the pro-factors of having a pet during a pandemic.

d. Know the psychological effects of having pets.

e. Answer the question “is having a pet a good room for an escape from mental distress?

Significance of the Study

The importance of this research is to inform people of the experiences and effects of

having pets during a pandemic. Knowing concrete details of people’s experiences and

insights of having pets during a pandemic formulated with the use of the participant’s

responses may open the minds of other people who are hesitating in adopting pets and

struggling in their lives. It will allow people to be informed of the effects brought by pets on

other people’s lives. This way, it will help them determine if it is worth it to adopt pets and
10

what are the pros and cons of having one. The results could be a value to personal and

institutional decision-making.

Limitations of the Study

There are several limitations while conducting this study. First, there are only limited

participants due to the COVID-19 pandemic in which we were not able to ask people

personally to be our participants. We had limited connections which lead us to only a small

number of participants. Second, due to the pandemic, the researchers and participants are

prompted to conduct their interviews online with limited access to physical interaction and

observation. Third, we did not have enough time to conduct the interview because of the

participants’ and researchers’ schedules. Lastly, the results of this study may not be

applicable to other people.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The scope of the study is people who have pets during the COVID-19 pandemic in

Dumaguete City. This study will identify and assess the effects of having pets on humans

during the time of a pandemic, and consider every aspect of the participant’s data that affects

these effects such as their age.

The study is delimited only for people who resided in Dumaguete City who had a pet

with them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview will be conducted with a limited

time framework and no physical interaction as a precaution to the coronavirus pandemic.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The purpose of this study was to determine and identify the effects of having pets on

humans during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers used the narrative approach in

conducting the study. The researchers aim to conceptualize and explore the experiences of

humans with their pets that is why the researchers utilized the narrative research design. The

data was collected through an online interview using the Zoom app and one face-to-face

interview. The interview lasted for four (4) days due to conflicting schedules and unexpected

happenings. It also took the researchers four (4) days to collect the data because of the health

and safety protocols that were mandated.

Research Instrument

The researchers use Zoom Meeting in conducting a well-structured series of

interviews aiming to gather information from the five (5) respondents who participated

willingly in the study. The main goal was to determine the effects of living with pets on

humans amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was categorized into two: (1) distinguishing the

respondent's profile information such as their name, gender, and age, while (2) includes the

four emergent themes namely: Emotional State on Participants, Effects of Having Pets on

Owner's well-being, Pro-factors and Benefits of having Pets, and Psychological Escape from

Distress.
13

Research Locale and Time of the Study

The research was conducted through personal face-to-face with one (adult) of our

interviewees and the rest of the interview was conducted online through Zoom due to the

ongoing pandemic which limits personal face-to-face in-depth interviews between the

researchers and respondents. The collection of data lasted from January 5 to January 8 of the

year 2022.

Research Participants

A total of (1) adult and (4) teenagers were the participants of the study from the

following schools — (1) from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial - Dumaguete Science High

School, (1) from Dumaguete City High School, (1) from St. Paul University Dumaguete, and

(1) from Negros Oriental State University.

Sampling Procedure

The sampling procedure used in the study was Purposive sampling in which a

homogeneous sample of individuals who are pet owners were chosen to participate based on

the purpose of the study.

15

Data Collection Procedure

Researchers have come up with interview guides that were evaluated and approved by

the instructor. This interview guide consists of questions that are to be asked during the

interview. The researchers searched for five (5) participants who are pet owners and are

willing to participate in the interview. Invitations and instructions were sent to the

participants beforehand including the detailed time and date of the interview. Data was

collected via Zoom Meeting and documented the process through recording. Data analysis

will then take part after transcribed data are ready.

Data Analysis Procedure

The collected data were carefully transcribed, coded, and analyzed accordingly. The

researchers analyzed the data by reviewing and understanding the recorded interview, with

the guide of transcribed materials. With this, the researchers were able to collect enough

information from the pet owners that helped them satisfy the questions written on their

statement of the problem. Thus, they were also able to know and understand the effects of

having pets during the pandemic.

Ethical Considerations

In this study, the researchers have considered ethical issues while conducting the

study. First, the participants were approached politely by the researchers if they were willing

to participate in the study. Second, the interviewers briefed the participants about the study

and what will happen at the interview proper. Third, in the interview proper, the researchers
16

extended their gratitude to the participants for accepting the invitation to participate in the

study. Fourth, the participants were informed, once again, that the meeting will be recorded

and will be written out carefully and professionally. Fifth, all personal details and data will be

kept confidential and treated with respect. Sixth, the data, results, method, and procedures

will be collected and conducted without any manipulation.

17

CHAPTER 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The study was conducted to know the effects of having pets on humans during the

pandemic. The researchers gathered data and information for in-depth analysis and discussion

through interview transcription that were gathered through online interviews. After an in-

depth analysis, the researchers were able to come up with three (3) significant themes. These

themes are the following: Experiences of Humans; Emotions Brought by Pets to Humans;

and Characteristics of Pets. These themes will be discussed in this chapter.

Figure 1. Emergent themes and categories

21

Emergent Theme 1: Experiences of Humans

1.1 Good Experiences

Results have shown that having a pet during a pandemic brings both good and bad

experiences to owners. The participants experienced more good than bad, such as having a

companion during the pandemic. P1 said that,

“They helped me, just by merely bing there ‘cause if ever I get down, I just kept to go outside

the house, find my dogs, hug them, play with them”

P5 also added,

“og naa kay pet mura man gud kag naay friend naa kay ka storya ba so nice jud na naa kay

companion sge”

The participants also experienced memories with their pets that serve as treasured memories.

With P1, the first time she met her pet was a treasured memory,

“it’s a treasured memory when I get to receive them and meet them for the first time”

Aside from this, the participants also pointed out that bonding with pets during the pandemic

is a form de-stress. P3 stated that,

22

“for me if anything na ma happy ka or anything na love nimo, makapa de-stress man jud na

nimo so mao rana, kalami man gud sa iro”

All of the participants described that their pets are their stress reliever, who brings comfort

and joy to them most of the time. Results have also shown that pets bring happiness, and a

feeling of satisfaction to their owners. Pets also teach them lessons, thus, serving as an

instrument for more learning. With P1,

“having them around during the pandemic kept me sane and kept me happy at times since

they’re like my happy pill”

P2 also stated,

“stress reliever like, I don't know. Like parehas aning after magklase ta, nya murag stress

kaayo kay, sila jud akong unang duolon”

With the satisfaction brought by pets, P3 said that,

“feeling happy, feeling complete, mao jud na siya, feeling complete. Its, di ko maka imagine

if wala koy dog”

Pets help owners well. Recent studies have shown that pet ownership makes an individual

happier and healthier mentally. (Animal Welfare Institute, 2022).

23

1.2 Bad Experiences

Although good experiences were presented, there were also bad experiences of having a pet

during the pandemic. Results have shown that the bad experiences of having a pet are getting

dog bites, pet restrictions in different places, and losing them.

P1 described that the day she was bitten by her dog was her worst memory.

“when I got bit by Bow the first time”

P3 experienced a hard time traveling with his pet, especially when going to Cebu since pets

like dogs are restricted in the condo that he’s staying in.

“naa mi balay sa Cebu, pero ang problema didto is restricted ang iro”

Pets can be an addition to a family which can vivify a household, however, they can also be

an annoyance to neighbors. Establishments enforce pet restrictions to make sure that animals

won’t disturb other people. This restriction has been a challenge to all pet owners and some

caused issues that have been upheld in court.(Moore, C. R., 2017).

Pet owners share an intense bond and love with their pets. For them, they are not just “pets”

but rather a beloved member of their family bringing fun, joy, and companionship to their

lives. So when they die, owners feel racked by grief and loss. Losing them triggers all sorts of

painful and difficult emotions. The more important your pet to you, the more intense pain

you’ll feel. (Robinson, L., et. al, October 2021).

24

Emergent Theme 2. Emotions Brought by Pets to Humans

2.1 Positive Emotions

Results have shown in the data that pets have an effect on human or pet owner's emotional

state. The respondents considered themselves emotionally stable having pet companionships,

P1 said

"... well uh, like, uhm, a good balance of happiness and stress also since there’s a lot to do

when they’re around."

Aside from this, the respondents have also shown the feeling of excitement, joy, and

overwhelmed emotions whenever they bond with their pets. Most of these emotions were felt

inside them genuinely. P2 expressed,

"... just by being with them… mura nakag, mura nakag naas cloud 9 ... cloud 9?? Pero like

lahi lahi man gud ang ginahatag jud sa dogs, I think, if dog lover pud ka… Lahi jud ilang

gihatag- ilang ginahatag nimo, murag pure… pure and genuine happiness rajud imong ma

feel… if kauban ka nila "

The feel of excitement and responsibility are also embodied by the respondents where in P4

said,

"Murag the excitement is there on how you'll take kanang take good care of your pet the first

time you met him/her."

25

It shows the advantages of pet companionship to humans on emotional health conditions that

could possibly key to self-improvement and lower down the level of stress through their pet's

presence.

2.2 Negative Emotions

Although it affected the pet owners positively, there were also minimal instances in which

having pets during the pandemic brings negative emotions. Respondents expressed a fear of

abandonment, lonesome, or even devastation. P2 was afraid to lose their pets,

"... ihatag silag lain… na mura katu tung murag like...desidido kay silang ihatags lain (sad

tone) and then murag, ako pud naka-realize pud ko nga…(murmurs)...what if mapadayon pa

silag himo atung ilang habit…"

This result shows how strengthened interaction and connection that humans create with their

pets can cause emotions of loss within them. Being far away, death, or even unwanted

incidents that involve their pets can create extreme loneliness. This might also prove that

intimate companionship with pets serves a lot of purpose to human especially during the

pandemic where social interaction is limited.

26

Emergent Theme 3: Characteristics of Pets

3.1 Traits of Pets

Results have shown some of the traits of pets during the pandemic. Participants identified

some of the admirable traits of their pets, such as cuteness. P4 said that,

“ Dili ko ka kuan, dili ko ka resist sa iyahang ka-ka cute. Makalagot kaayo iya ka cute!

(Laughs) Nya kagamay, so like, mga kuan, mga pila ka days, mga kuan ra guro to, mga two

days ra guro to, ni stop sa ko kadyot, nya wa na ko kapugong. Ga sige nakog kuan niya, halog

halog na sab. Until such time nga kuan, sige rakog halog halog niya pero di ra nako siya

ipaduol sa akong nawong ay sa akong nawong ba. So like, murag na okay naman pud. Mao to

nga kuan, nagkadako mn pd siya ron, nya iyang balahibo kay di na katong gagmay so like

mao to.”

P1 also added another admirable trait of pets, which is their innocent behavior. P1 said that,

"yes, they just like… uh do random things er— stupid things probably chuckles. It’s just

hilarious when you get the te— eh— the innocent though… uh innocent creatures"

Participants also identified undesirable traits of pets on their physical features, such as scary-

looking dog. P5 said that,

27

"medyo makadalok sya tan.awon pero like dle sya mamaak ba like dile sya mamaghot chill

rajud sya pagkairo pero muingon jud silang makahadlok kay medyo pangit man kay american

bully man so..."

Most of the participants pointed out favorable traits of their pets. These traits brought

satisfaction to the pet owners making their pets likeable at their end. These traits must be the

reason why they indulged in pet ownership.

3.2 Roles of Pets

Aside from the traits, the results also showed vital roles of pets during the pandemic.

Participants recognize the major roles played by their pet in their life. Results have shown

that a pet's major role is to give happiness, companionship and emotional support. P1

identified the role of her pet as a happy pill. P1 said that,

"uhm…9. having them around during the pandemic— uhm… kept me sane and kept me—

like uhm, happy at times since they’re like my— what do you call— uh… happy pill, uh…

yeah"

P5 added,

"happiness jud legit, malipay jud ko and kanang ambot lang skl pero ganahan gani ko mu

adopt og cat kay naa may mga miming na makalouy idto sa gawas and like nice jud kaau sa

feeling na naay pet katong since una nakong naa koy pet hantod karon like happy jud ko na

naa sila like kana jud moy murag consistent na feeling ang naa and yeah"
28

P3 recognizes his pet as part of his family, it provided him companionship.

"Uhm, 5. actually murag part of our family napud among dogs, so, uhm dako kaayo silag

tabang especially, especially na kuan, especially na kanang wala kay friends, wala tay laing

relatives na maka isturya or everything, uhm usahay sila rapod among isturyahon bisag dili

mu tubag.

P5 also described the barking of the dogs as a symbolism of emotional support

"you have kuan a companion, yeah emotional support even though dle sila mu sulti but mu

bark "

The roles of the pets in human life might be impactful and beneficial at one's end.People can

be exhausting. Work, school, family — just being around them sometimes can leave you

feeling anxious and annoyed. Yet being in the presence of an animal can have a calming

effect on the human psyche. In an increasingly chaotic and uncertain world, filled with the

strangest of days and events, coming home to an animal that’s been waiting patiently for you

to return is like stepping out of a desert into an emotional oasis. (Licking isn’t loving, dog-

shaming isn’t working— Times of India, 2014)

Pets are comforting companions. They keep us healthy and relieve stress. They play and

show us love. They keep us from being lonely.(Why Do People Keep Pets?—Wonderpolis,

2020)
29

Summary and Conclusion

The results of this study show that the companionship, presence, and experiences with

pets have a great effect on humans/pet owners during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The

participants were asked several questions that gathered their lived experiences with pets.

They expressed optimistic feelings, happiness, joy, excitement, and completeness that helped

them cope with the new norms so they can continue living their lives amidst the pandemic.

On the other hand, they also shared negative experiences or emotions they had with their pets

that can also be attributed to their lifestyle and mental health conditions. Examples are fear of

abandonment, loss of pets, and dog bites. Even though these are quite negative experiences, it

doesn't mean that their pets bring uncomfortable experiences to them. Having such

experiences and emotions especially when losing their pets explains how important pets are

to humans.

The findings of this research suggest that having a pet during the pandemic is a good

room for self-recovery and to destress. The majority of the participants expressed how their

pets changed their lives in so many ways that aren't even possible when it comes to social

interaction.

After a series of coding and formulating themes regarding the participants' data, the

researchers have found that the effects of pets on humans (pet owners) can be divided into

three main categories: experiences, emotions, and characteristics. The experiences of humans

are divided into two (2), good experiences and bad experiences. Emotions brought by pets are

categorized into two (2), positive emotions and negative emotions. Lastly, the third emergent

theme, Characteristics of Pets, is also divided into two (2), Traits of pets and roles of pets.
30

In conclusion, the three (3) emergent themes point out how pets greatly affect the

lives of people during the pandemic. Participants were able to cope with the new normal

with the help of their pets. Their pets became their companion, their source of happiness, and

their friend. Their pets became their comfort in times of difficulties. The results show that

having a pet is a good room to destress and to ease loneliness during the COVID-19

Pandemic. It conveys how pets help humans mentally, emotionally, and socially.

Recommendation

Based on the findings, the researchers recommend future studies to widen the scope of

respondents where the research must be open to all ages, such as from children to seniors

who could be the research participants. The researchers also suggest conducting more in

depth interviews with the participants in order to obtain additional data without simply

relying on surface-level answers of the respondents online. Lastly, aside from determining the

effects of having a pet during the pandemic, the researchers recommends future researchers to

focus on a specific type of pet —dogs, cats, fishes, etc.—because effects might vary to the pet

owners depending on what pet they are with during the pandemic, and in order to avoid broad

results that may cause confusion in analyzing data.

Interview Transcript and Codes

INTERVIEW WITH PARTICIPANT #1 Teen
Name: Althea Kathleen Bartoces
Via Zoom
Date: January 6, 2022

I: May we know your name and age, and where do you live?
P: uhm, my name is Althea Kathleen R. Bartoces. I am 17 years old and I’m currently
residing at Lower Camanjac, Dumaguete City.
I: Okay, so first question po, uh, since when did you have a pet?
P: well, uhm, last year, no no, I think it was a— yeah. Last year, I had my first dog and just
recently, last December I had my second dog.
I: Ah so you currently have two dogs right now
P: yeah
P: Oh, ah, can you state the names please?
I: uhm, their names are Bow and Pierre
I: Again?
P: (clears throat) Bow and Pierre”
I:(nods)Ah Bow and Pierre. Ah okay. Next question, uhm, what’s the best memory you have
with Bow and… again, Pierre?
P: yes. Uhm, 1. the best memory was I guess when… when I first got them ‘cause… uh, it’s a
treasured memory whenever I get to… when I get to receive them and meet them for the first
time.
1. TREASURED MEMORY (vivo coding)
I: Okay, so we want to know what you felt when you first had them, like individually. What
did you feel?
P: uhm, with… actually, 2. to the both of them uh, what I thought of at first that it would be a
really big responsibility, something that I couldn’t probably handle since I’m not really good
at handling a lot of responsibilities
2. BIG RESPONSIBILITY (vivo coding)
I: Hmm, okay, so next naman is, uh, when was the ano, when was the worst memories you
have with your pet?
40

P: 3. when I got bit… by Bow the first time. It wasn’t really that serious though, it was fine,
and the other… uhm, uh with Pierre… I guess… i-it was same when I got bit.
3. DOG BITES (descriptive coding)
I: Pero like dili raman kaha grabe?
P: dili ra, kuan ra… (waves hands as gestures) —
I: Oh—
I: :Okay so since uh… do you have them— uh… you have them both diba during the
pandemic? You were with them during the pandemic
P: yes
I: Okay so, what feelings or how did you feel wheneve— how do you feel whenever you are
with them?
P: 4. happy… uh, well uh, like, uhm, a good balance of happiness and stress also since there’s
a lot to do when they’re around
4. BALANCED EMOTIONS (descriptive coding)
I: Happiness and what? sorry
P:stress.

I: ah stress, okay. So, how do they make you happy? Like why do you feel happy around
them
P: 5. yes, they just like… uh do random things er— stupid things probably *chuckles*. It’s
just hilarious when you get the te— eh— the innocent though… uh innocent creatures
5. INNOCENT BEHAVIOUR
I: Okay, so, we want— we would like to know (drops bottle) sorry about that. We would like
to know uh how much did your pet helped you to cope mentally, physically, emotionally,
during the pandemic?
P: uhm…6. they helped me, just by merely being there ‘cause if ever I get down, uhm,
they— I—(stutters) I just kept to go outside the house, find my dogs, hug them, play with
them, keep it— yeah
6. COMPANIONSHIP
I: So basically, just being with them helped you to feel better? Uhh… it’s that correct?
P: yes
I: Okay so, wait. Okay so, when— uhm with your pets, how do you— I mean, how do you
treat your friend— ay how do you treat your pets *chuckles*. Do you treat them as a friend, a
sibling, or a family?
41

P: well… uh,7. I treat them as family since they’re like my little babies
7. LITTLE BABIES (vivo coding)
I: Okay so, we would also like to know how these pets, Bow and Pierre, affect your
wellbeing, your health in every way, during the pandemic?
P: uh, overall… 8. all they did, uhm, was to— like takes me in a good— in a good— in a
good mood so like… like mentally, I’m in a safe state when I’m around them… I guess
that’s— uh, all I could add
8. SAFE ZONE
I: Okay so, we would also want to know what are the pro-factors or the benefits of having
them around during the pandemic?
P: uhm…9. having them around during the pandemic— uhm… kept me sane and kept me—
like uhm, happy at times since they’re like my— what do you call— uh… happy pill, uh…
yeah
9. HAPPY PILL (vivo coding)
I: Okay, last question. Uh… for you, uh, is having a pet a good room for an escape from
distress? Why or why not?
P: 10.well, actually that depends or it could be both… it could be good and bad… but if
you’re like up for the responsibility, then it’s a good thing to have around. And if— if you’re
not in the right— like head state to handle with— a living creature, so I don’t think that
would be good for you
10. MATURE THINKING
I: So basically, you mean that— oh, niingon si rain na last pero mudugang rako. So basically
niingon ka nga, ah… it’s really up to if ready ka to handle that responsibility and that’s when
you can say nga they are a good room for es— ay uh, for distress?
P: yeah… it’s—( nods)

(aircon bg)

I1: Okay, next question, how did you feel when you first had your pet, like katung pinaka
una, katung fifteen years old pa ka?

P: Kuan! Well, unexpected pud tu syang niabot jud, dili tu sya like..wala jud mi gahunahuna
na magka iro mi atu, 16. unexpected tu sya...pero.. I felt delighted jud atu kay.. lahi man gud
syay- ... ambot, when I first saw the dog, lahi jud akong nafeel like dili ra katung.. "ay cutee"
... murag, paglantaw nako sa dog kay murag.. 17. I felt like I had to … I had to own her na
kailangan ako jud syang pet so .. mao tu, (inaudible sound)... nahappy- na happy kog

16. Shock yet excited 17. Genuine ownership

I1: Gi adopt ninyo or - (suddenly cut)

P: No.. (firm answer).. Wala, gikuha sya sa akong auntie sa paunayan (giggles), kay like sige
syag.. like iyang tag-iya naa sa paunayan, and then like, gipalaag laag ra sya sige then, akong
auntie naluoy.. kay nganong ipalaag ra then murag… (stutter) like daghan syang scratches
pud daw tu, gikuha syas akong aunt, then, nianhi akong auntie sa balay then nakit-an nako
ang iro then.. 18. akong giingnan akong auntie, "ako na lang." (giggles) (joyful tone)... Katu..

45

19. "Stress Reliever" (vivo coding)

I2: So, they are your stress relievers jud diay, so, during the pandemic, we know… we know
that … limited kaayo atung time..time.. or like bawal jud ta makigkita sa atung friends or
something and we end up always being alone in our own, in our rooms, so… how did your
pet help you cope during the pandemic like physically, emotionally and mentally, how did
they help you?… during that time?

P: Mura pud silag- (giggles).. Mura pud silag tawo… during the pandemic.. I mean like,
kanang like murag, kanang muana ko, "Hala lami lagi ilaag", then- (inaudible) lami ilaag
bisag quarantine.. Silay puy mukuan na.. nga murag gusto sila mulaag, murag sila muy…

there? How did they affect your life, generally, during the quarantine or pandemic? (People
talking)

P: Well… During the pandemic, being with them, 21. idto ko nakakita sa ilahang worth as
dogs Kay.. if katu man gung face to face kay like, mura raman gud, like wala sa wala miy
pake, pero like, limited rajud among time magkita, like pagmata then muadto nag school,
then pagbalik, idto na then matulog napud, so di jud mi kabond jud, while atung pag
quarantine kay daghan jud kaayo mig time, and then idto jud nako nakita ilang worth as our
pets, and then idto pud nako murag gipadama nila ilahang worth as… as our pets! (firm tone)
And.. yeah katu, uhh… they changed me in a way nga nakakita ko sa ilahang worth…
(giggles) katu, balik-balik sya pero yeah katu (giggles) 21. Valuing Worth
46

I2: Okay so, thank you so, one question, uh, can you imagine your pandemic life or

sad sila sa akong tapad (giggles) Kay- (suddenly cut)

I2:How do you- …. Sorry, sorry (loud people in the bg) , go on.

P: Kay ano… uh … 22. part naman pud gud sila sa among family, like… sa kuan daan, even
katung, kanang mag food, sa food, kay naa sad silay ilaha na, like, mag- … mag lung ag kay
like naapil na sad ilaha, so murag if sa quarantine, if wala pud sila kay murag boring sad
dagay among balay… nga murag, kami rapung kuan, nya especially kay kami pud diri kay di
kaymi.. like… like mag halo-halo, so murag sila muy murag mu-connect namo, during the
quarantine, like magdula sila, then naa sad mi kay murag idto… sila muy amoang comedian..
kumbaga… so murag di ko kakita jud (giggles) nga wala sila sa among quarantine..

22. "Family" (vivo coding)

I2: Okay so, personally, in real life, how do you imagine your pandemic or quarantine life
without your pets, like when- , like what you have said, when you are sad or stressed, sila
dayun imong duolan, or sila imong comfort… if, they were not there, how do you imagine
your pandemic life or how do you imagine coping?

P: Well, I think… if wala sila, I'd isolate myself jud (unclear word), with my gadgets, with
my books, kay usa man pud gud sila usas- … ay- … 23. usa man gud silas mga rason
nganong mugawas ko, nganong makihalubilo nako sa uban, kay if wala pud sila, feel nako
naa rakos kwarto, magbasa or maglantaw ug salida, magchat ana… kana I'd do- ay… kuan
ilang nahatag nako… positive na, (giggles) positive ilahang nahatag na...unsay tawag ani….
Basta positive ilang na hatag nako… (laughs) 23. Gives Positive Reason

I1: Ah okay, wait lang, main question, I know balik-balik ni pero... what do you think are the
pro-factors of having a pet during a pandemic?

P: Well…. One-, usa pud na, makapalipay sila, at the same time... uhh.. kanang.. during...
quarantine pud kay, daghan-... daghan pud tung mga like.. mas tungod kay naa ras stay-at-
home, then murag, mg- mga walay lingaw ag mga tawo, so manuroy-nuroy sila… (inaudible
47

audio) , like, uhm… 24. nakapa-guard sa among house... yeah nakapa-guard silas among
house, wait pardon sa gani sa ano, question kay galibog ko… (giggles)

24. Security

I1: Ano, what are-.. what do you think are the pro-factors of having a pet during a pandemic?

(dog barking) (aircon bg)

P: Yeah katu, uhh, makapalipay, makapaguard sa… balay, sa paman…? Sa kuan paman na
fact-

I2: Stress reliever?

P: Yeah, stress reliever… wala, kanang mga ingun atu.. (giggles)

I1: Ahh. Like what you said earlier nga.. kanang… like daghan kang mabuhat, like dili lang
nga mag sig-tutok sa imong gadget, dili lang mag sig-basa but makagawas gawas pa ka…

P: Yeah.. mhmm.. (agreed sincerely) Yeah..

I2: And also they became your comfort, during your tough times yeah… a friend, a family.

I1: Then nagka hiusa mos imohang family…

P: Yeah… mhmm…

I2: Last question, last questi- (people in the bg) Do you think that having a pet, uhh, a pet is a
good room for an escape from distress?

P: 25. Oo!! (happily) I mean… kuan (laughs)... just by being with them… mura nakag, mura
nakag naas cloud 9 (laughs) cloud 9?? (Laughs) Pero like lahi lahi man gud ang ginahatag jud
sa dogs, I think, if dog lover pud ka… Lahi jud ilang gihatag- ilang ginahatag nimo, murag
pure… pure and genuine happiness rajud imong ma feel… if kauban ka nila … mao tu…
(sincere tone) 25. "Pure and Genuine Happiness" (vivo coding)

P: Feelings? Uhm, feeling happy, 29. feeling complete, mao jud na siya, feeling complete. Its,
di ko maka imagine if wala koy dog, until now. 29. “Feeling complete” (vivo coding)
I: Like diba karong pandemic limited ra ang makameet ta ug other people, so how much do
your dogs help mentally, physically during the pandemic?
P: Uhm, 30. actually murag part of our family napud among dogs, so, uhm dako kaayo silag
tabang especially, especially na kuan, especially na kanang wala kay friends, wala tay laing
relatives na maka isturya or everything, uhm usahay sila rapod among isturyahon bisag dili
mu tubag. 30. Companionship
I: How did your pets affect your life?
P: Uhm, affect our lives, 31. Uhm grabe like to the point na dili pwede ug dili mi kalakaw sa
balay if walay mabilin nila. So sauna murag bag need ta ug dog para mu gaurd sa balay pero
karon need napud ta ug tawo na mu gaurd sa ato dog. 31. Devoted So grabe sila ug kuan
gyud, 32. grabe silag affection towards namo. Uhh labi nani si Maiko ug si Mizhka, hope

I: Okay so main question, what do you think are the pro-factors of having a pet during a
pandemic?
P: Uh yes as what I said kuan sila, kanang, companion, like 33. uhm, dili ka makafeel lonely
kay naa sila and also the biggest kuan gyud kay ang responsibility kay its like, before, naa mi
iro, nikuha mi ug iro, para lagi mu gaurd dog, so naa man mi german shepherd, naa mi
rottweiler, as guard dog, but pag abot sa pug, nausab amo paglantaw sa iro, dili na, dili diay
na sila happy ibutang ra ug cage ba, dili na sila pwede ug i cage dapat ang mga iro, so you
have ro spend time na muligo nila.
So mao nay kuan

(vivo coding)
50

I: How do you imagine your pandemic life without pets?

P: Oo, musamot tag ka covid. 34. Uh yes, actually, in.ani ang nahitabo, naa mi balay sa Cebu,
pero ang problema didto is restricted ang iro, kay plano man unta mi nga mu balhin balhin
lang bisag ga pandemic ana nga time para dili mi ma kuan ba, ma stuck in one place samot na
kanang every month ko ga byahe, so ang nahitabo is dili nalang mi mu byahe didto tungod
muhatag lang sila ug 1 day for dogs so that’s every thursday. 34. Pet Restrictions Wa mo

P: Is having a pet? Yes, ofcourse, kaayo, 35. uhm for me if anything na ma happy ka or
anything na love nimo, makapa distress man jud na nimo so mao rana, kalami man gud sa iro
kay dili sila mu tubag so wala ka kabalo unsay ilang gi feeling so imo silang isturyaon, imoha
rapung huna huna muy imong kuan na maoy iyang tubag bisag dili. Ah nasuko ka nako sa?
Oo, ah nasuko lagi, oh diba? If mutubag ang iro, wa nay lain possible na wa pud koy iro
