Imagine that your Australian pen friend is coming to Viet Nam and will spend a day in
your hometown/city. He/She has asked for your advice on the places of interest they
should go to and the things they can do there.
From: Phuong Linh
To: Roy
Subject: Places of interest in my hometown.
Dear Roy,
I’m so glad to hear that you’re coming to Viet Nam.It’s a pity that you can only spend one day in
Hoi An.There are many interesting things you can do here, but I think within one day you are able
to do three things.First, you can go for a walk around the streets surrounded by the atmosphere of
times gone by.Especially, if you visit the town during the full moon, you can enjoy the beautiful
lights from colorful lanterns.Secondly, you can get some new threads. One of Hoi An’s biggest
tourist drawing cards are the tailors that line the streets in the centre of town. What ever you want
to be made, someone can make it happen as quickly as within 24 hours.Last but not least, as a
cuisine lover, you should definitely treat yourself with various special dishes here.I suggest that
you try Cao Lau with an authentic taste at Mermaid Restaurant. If you want to find something a
little adventurous, you can also taste egg coffee at Cafe 57, my favourite shop.Believe me! It
would be really worth a try.Tell me when you’re coming so I can take you to travel around.
Look forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
Phuong Linh.
2.what are the advantages and disadvantages of city life?Do you like city life?Sate your
reasons.
In these days, many people tend to move into the city. There are some argument and acceptance
about the benefits and drawbacks of living in the city. In my opinion, it has both advantages and
disadvantages. It's true that cities have a lot of opportunities for people who are looking for jobs
with high salary. Because big companies or international enterprises usually locate in big cities
and they are always looking for employees. Especially, many people accept low- paying jobs like
street vendors or construction workers to earn a living in urban life. It's easy to understand why
people want to live in the city in the hope of having a better life. Life in the city has its own
convenience. For example, there are shops, supermarkets, and restaurants everywhere to satisfy
everyone's demand whenever they need. City also offers many recreational facilities to please you
in your free time such as theaters, cinemas... Moreover, living condition in the city is really
comfortable with modern equipment like the Internet, television, telephone, ...However, life in the
city also has lots of disadvantages. The biggest issue in the city is traffic. Streets and roads in the
cities are always packed with vehicles and people. Another problem is the atmosphere. The air in
the city is contaminated because of the commission from factories and transport. This leads to
environmental pollution and in some cases seriously affects people’s ealth.Nevertheless,I still want
to live in the city because nowadays there are so many facilities I can't refuse. And because I feel
relaxed and comfortable staying in my own city.
There are many natural wonders in Viet Nam like Paradise Cave, Perfume Pagoda, Cuc Phuong
National Park,... but I like visiting Ha Long Bay best because of its attractive scenery, picturesque
setting and touring experience.Ha Long Bay is an amazing tourist attraction in the north of
Vietnam. It is located in Quang Ninh province. Visitors choosing Ha Long as one of the most ideal
destinations in Viet Nam due to its breathtaking views, natural beauties and Geological values. Ha
Long Bay has been two time Recognized by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage Site. The
complex includes 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names such as
Hon Dau Nguoi, Hon Rong , Hon Trong Mai … Moreover, it is also famous for its infinitely rich
system of grottoes and caves such as Thien Cung, Dau Go, Sung Sot ,... Besides, Ha Long is
recognized by scientists to be a tropical ocean region such as ecosystem of coral reefs, many
species of animals and precious creatures: deer, weasels, squirrels and in particular, red-haired
monkeys.Going there , you can lie on the beach, swim or dive to see the coral reefs, run away
from the noise of the cities and breath fresh air. You can even join the team building activities
which have been developed recently. Remember to buy you some special dishes, handicrafts and
enjoy local foods.
HCM city is a popular attraction in VN although the climate is quite sultry . when you come here ,
you can see a lot of beautiful places and there are a lots of things we shouldn’t miss. Fristly, HCM
has many icomic places such as Ben Thanh market , Grand theater, Nguyen Hue walking street
and so on . secondly , the cuisine in here is very diverse and attractive . thirdly , there are many
suburbs here , you can go there for a picnic to enjoy the fresh air . it’s really worthy place to live.
5.what are the things that have caused damage to the man-made wonders of VN ? suggest
the ways to protect nd preserve them. What have you done to preserve them?
VN has a great variety of man-made wonders. Many of these wonders attract a large number of
visitors each day but they have been damaged because many roads, hotels, factories,.. have been
built around our man-made wonders, this leads to negative changes in local landscapes, hordes of
tourists visit these wonders every day, causing overcrowding, ecological disaster and
environmental issues, many valuable things have been stolen from the wonders and the local
governments don’t have long-term measures to protect them from severe weather conditions...So,
what should we do to protect and preserve them?Fristly , the local goverment should limit the
numbers of tourists visiting them every day.Secondly , we shouldn’t litter.thirdly , i’d like to suggest
raising money to restore and preserve them , we can hold a campaign to ask for donation from
individuals and organizations.finally, putting the valuable things in high-security places and we
shouldn’t build roads , hotels.. around the wonders . i hope many defensive measures will be
taken to protect and preserve our man-made wonders.
6. write about the three most important qualities you think a person needs to be able to get
along with other members in an extended family?
In today’s modern life, a large number of people still opt to live in extended families in which
multiple generations share a house. Living with other members harmoniously in large families will
never be easy if we do not possess some following certain qualities.Firstly, willingness to share is
quite essential for all members of multigenerational families. Because we live with lots of others
including our grandparents and our relatives, we have to share almost everything such as
bedrooms, bathrooms, televisions or computers. It also means that people can share the high
living expenses together, namely water and electricity bills and food.Secondly, being able to be
sympathetic is considered as an important quality to live in harmony with the extended family.
Apparently, generation gaps are unavoidable and they are likely to be wider when incredible
technological innovations are changing the world significantly these days. However, if each
member learns to understand and respect others’ perspective, generation gaps will not be big
troubles. Finally, in order to maintain the harmony in the family, everyone needs to take care of as
well as support each other. Each member ought to be willing to help others whenever they
encounter difficulties. The encouragement and help from the family partly assist them in
overcoming obstacles. In a word, getting along well with other family members requires individuals’
effort. Hence, some typical qualities a person should have to live in harmony with the extended
family are willingness to share, sympathy and supportiveness.
7. Choose one facility which was not available twenty years ago and write a short
description of how students in the past studied without that facility.
It is undeniable that the Internet has brought many advantages which students twenty years ago
were not able to enjoy. It is known as a vast electronic library of information that learners can
make good use of in their studies, specifically in doing research. In other words, the advent of the
Internet has changed the way people find information. Decades ago, to find relevant information or
documents for their assignment, students had to go to the library and looked things up in books
and encyclopedias. Additionally, they would also need to talk to some people who might provide
them with useful data for their assignment. Once they gathered enough necessary information,
they began to hand-write their assignment. The first draft possibly contained many mistakes; they
had to rewrite it on another piece of paper for submission. Apparently, it took them a lot of time,
energy and even money to complete an assignment. However, thanks to technological changes,
especially Internet access, it is much easier for students to search for information and be proactive
in acquiring knowledge these days.
8. write a short paragraph about a traditional home in the countryside of Viet Nam in the
past.
A traditional home in Viet Nam has two - wing and three - room. The house are usually made of
wood, bricks and tiles if owner is well - off. And the poorer build their house with bamboo, earth
and straw. Most of them live in extended family where man is head of the household. Food and
drinks are mainly home - grown and home - made so they are all very healthy. Their marriges are
usually arranged by parents.
9.what are the benefits of traditional crafts?what are the challenges that artisans may face?
suggest an action plan to deal with the challenges?
Today , we're going to talk about traditional crafts in Vietnam their benefits and challenges as well
as some ways to overcome these challenges. Viet Nam is rich in traditional crafts such as
embroidery, pottery, basket weaving, silk weaving, stone carving and bronze casting. These crafts
are usually passed down from generation to generation in craft villages. Many craft villages have
become places of interest for both locals and foreigners. Some of them are Bat Trang pottery
village, Tay Ho conical hat village, Non Nuoc marble village, and Ha Dong silk village. On one
hand, traditional crafts have many benefits such as providing employment, preserve cultural
heritage, Providing additional income, Creating natural/regional pride ,Helping improve local
infrastructure and services,Creating cohesion between craft families and communities and
helping develop tourism. Firstly, traditional crafts provide many people, especially young ones in
rural areas with job opportunities. Now, besides farming, they can live on handicraft making or
other follow-up services.Secondly, traditional crafts help preserve cultural heritage which is shown
through Sophisticated handicrafts by skillful artisans. In addition, more and more tourists like
visiting craft villages and buying handicrafts as souvenirs. Therefore, local tourism will develop
quickly. On the other hand, Vietnamese craftsmen have faced some challenges such as Losing
authenticity , Treating waste and pollution ,Competition from other countries ,Relying too much on
tourism,Limited designs , Natural resources running out. They may be made for the commercial
demands of tourists rather than for the real purpose of art. Waste treatment and pollution are other
issues in craft villages because waste is often directly released into the local environment without
proper treatment. And there’s a lot of competition from other countries like China or India. So how
can we deal with these problems?Well,I think traditonal craft skill competitions and handicraft
exhibition should be held so that artisans can try to sharpen their skills, learn from each other and
promote their products. To reduce pollution, villagers should try to find ways to reuse and recycle
waste. The government should also help develop waste treatment facilities in each craft village
.Moreover , artisans need to change the designs of their product and improve the overall quality to
attract more customers.
