Lesson 3: Reading

I. AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON

1. Language focus:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Activate knowledge of Ha Long Bay - a World Heritage Site of Viet Nam and its
attractions.

Use some adjectives to talk about Ha Long.

2. Skills:
To help Ss get started with the following skills:

Skimming skills (reading the text quickly to get an overall impression and look for
the main idea).

Reading for details and specific information.

Guessing the meaning of new words through the context.

3. Attitudes:

- Actively get involved in-class activities designed by teacher.

- Being proud of heritages of our country and having actively attitudes and
activities to preserve them.

II. PREPARATION

1. Teacher:

- Teaching aids: text book, lesson plan, Power Point

- Teaching approach: mainly communicative teaching


2. Students:

- Read through Unit 8- Reading at home

- Locate new words and their meanings in advance

III. PROCEDURES

I. Warming-up: "Where is here?" instructions and give the answer.

Objectives: get Ss to know the topic of the


lesson: Ha Long Bay. This activity focuses
on skimming skills (reading the text quickly
to get an overall impression and look for the
main idea)

Steps:

T shows the question "Where is here?" on


the screen, then provides Ss with some clues
to find the answer:

+ It was recognized as the World Heritage


Site by UNESCO in 1994.

+ It is located in Quang Ninh Province, Viet


Nam

+ Its name means "descending dragon"

Key: "Ha Long Bay"

II. New lesson


 Read the text
Activity 1: Matching paragraph with heading
 Do the task
Objective: help Ss understand the main idea
of the text.  Give the answers

Steps:

Tasks Ss to read the text quickly. After Ss


read the text, T shows the task on the slide:

A contains paragraph 1-6, column B
provides the main idea of each paragraph.

Steps:

provided a box with some words and a table
with one column showing the meanings and
one blank column. The task is to find the
correct word to fill in each space.

Tasks Ss to look at the words provided then


read the text again and guessing the
meanings based on the context.
