ABSTRACT
The research paper titled “The Advantages of Taking Humanities and
Social Sciences for Upcoming Grade 11 student at Marcelino Fule Memorial
College” shows how the strand Humanities and Social Sciences benefits to the
student when it comes to communication, self-development and many more.

Iv.
According to (Pabustan, et al., 2024) Communication skills cannot be
disregarded especially now a days because communication plays a crucial part in
our daily lives. It is done to answer the questions: 1.) What is their initial
impressions and thoughts of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
Strand? 2) How do you think the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
Strand will contribute to their development as a student in terms of Academic
development, Personal development, and Career development? 3) What are the
common factors influencing students' decisions to choose or not to choose the
HUMSS strand at Marcelino Fule Memorial College? 4) Do you value/get anxiety
when it comes to presenting up in front? Mainly in public speaking? 5) Are you
having a hard time speaking in English and also communicating with people? 6)
Do you self-doubt yourself? 7) Do you think you have low confidence in
yourself?
Case study was used as the methodology for this study which helps to
conduct a research even with not enough participants due to the topic. It helps the
Researchers’ to gather up data easily with just the use of small population of
participants. The summary and themes of the research are presented. It concluded
that there is really lots of advantage of taking the Humanities and Social Sciences
strand for upcoming grade 11 students that could help them to have a bright future
ahead.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is one of the strand offered in

Senior High School. This is often chosen by the students that aim to be a

professional teacher, lawyer, psychologist and other professions that require

communication skills. A variety of students from Junior High School are confused

about what to take for their Senior High School journey. Taking this strand is a

must. Humanities and Social Sciences strand helps to improve communication

skills, reading and writing skills, even your creativity skills. It is a strand that

focuses on human behavior, politics, society, literature, and communication that

is always used in everyday lives. Teenagers these days struggle to pick the right

strand for their dream courses. HUMSS is a highly recommended one, it focuses

on the study of society, culture, communication, and relationships. This strand

helps in improving self-esteem, self-confidence, communication skills, writing

and reading skills, etc. Humanities and Social Sciences strand is offered in

different schools, specifically Marcelino Fule Memorial College (MFMC).

Taking this strand comes with great advantages for students.

This strand focuses in improving critical thinking skills and problem

solving skills that are needed in future job opportunities. Taking Humanities and

Social Sciences strand could also improve interpretation and evaluation of text

being read in certain sites that is useful in creating literary works and researches.
It also nurtures social awareness especially in the government and politics, which

is one of the reason why those who dream to be a lawyer take this strand. This

strand prepares students for various carrier paths related in politics, social

sciences, law, political will lead to more sciences, and public speaking skills.

Communication is also one thing that can be improved in taking Humanities and

Social Sciences strand due to the subjects offered that are helpful in improving

grammar and text arrangement, this strand also expand knowledge about the

languages that are often used in the Philippines. Taking this strand will result a

great and more improved self.

Background of the Study

We chose this subject to remind all incoming Grade 11 students that

studying The Humanities and Social Sciences has many benefits, since it can help

you become a better public speaker and communicate more effectively. Because,

it focuses more on those who aspire to work as public servants, teachers,

attorneys, and police officers. We students encourage that the Humanities and

Social Sciences do not stand in our way. The reason is because, in addition to the

old curriculum, it prolongs the school years, which has led to numerous

complaints from pupils. The students may already be enrolled in college after

junior high. Therefore, we like to provide the Humanities and Social Sciences as

an additional route to achievement. This study investigates linguistic complexity

patterns in research articles across the humanities and social sciences (HSS)

disciplines to understand their distinct knowledge construction modes (KCMs).

By analyzing 600 research articles from 10 HSS disciplines using automated tools

for syntactic and lexical complexity measurements, we identified two major

KCMs: the humanities mode (KCM-H) and social sciences mode (KCM-SS),

each with distinct sub-modes. KCM-H features longer sentences with extensive

subordination and coordination, while maintaining relatively lower lexical

sophistication. KCM-SS exhibits higher lexical sophistication but simpler

syntactic structures. Notable variations exist within each mode: Philosophy

emphasizes logical subordination, History and Literature combine coordination

and subordination for narrative development, and disciplines like Psychology and

Anthropology favor empirical description through coordination and specialized

vocabulary. Linguistics uniquely displays complex noun phrases despite simpler

overall syntax. These findings reveal how disciplinary epistemologies shape

academic discourse through distinct linguistic patterns, offering implications for

English for Academic Purposes instruction and cross-disciplinary

communication.

Taylor & Francis, 2023 Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a unique, powerful,

and proven form of small-group learning that is being increasingly adopted in

higher education. Teachers who use TBL report high levels of engagement,

critical thinking, and retention among their students. TBL has been used

successfully in both small and large classes, in computer-supported and online

classes; and because it is group work that works, it has been implemented in
nearly every discipline and in countries around the world. This book introduces

the elements of TBL and how to apply them in the social sciences and humanities.

It describes the four essential elements of TBL–readiness assurance, design of

application exercises, permanent teams, peer evaluation–and pays particular

attention to the specification of learning outcomes, which can be a unique

challenge in these fields. The core of the book consists of examples of how TBL

has been incorporated into the cultures of disciplines as varied as economics,

education, literature, politics, psychology, and theatre. The authors explain why

they felt a need to change how they taught and why they chose TBL. Furthermore,

each chapter provides examples of the assignments and exercises they use to help

their students achieve the specific learning outcomes of their courses. At a time

of increasing course sizes, and emphasis on learning outcomes, TBL offers the

means to meet such demands while connecting students to their coursework, and

stimulating their intellectual engagement.

Theoretical Framework

Humanities and Social Sciences strand is an academic strand that aims to

nurture student’s skills and talents for their future. This strand focuses in

improving self-confidence, self-esteem, political awareness, and public speaking

skills. This strand can help students improve in their communications skills that

is important in everyday lives of individuals. In taking this strand, students will

also understand each other more that may deepen their relationship. As a result,
they will feel more connected with one another. HUMSS strand is suitable or

those individuals that are curious and interested in the society whether it is

sociocultural or sociological phenomena. This strand also encourage students to

speak up their opinions regarding in the issues in our society. Humanities and

Social Sciences strand is suitable for students who are interested in arts, politics,

anthropology, communication, psychology, and many more.

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, every individuals needs to start

with basic physiological needs before stepping up to higher levels needs like

safety, love, esteem, and ultimately, self-actualization. These needs are based on

each and other individuals needs that is important in our lives that are studied in

the HUMSS strand, Personal Development project that aims to make students

realize their worth and especially to help them improve in mastering their

confidence and self-awareness.

On the other hand, according to Vygotsky’s interactionist theory also

known as symbolic interactionism, language exists for the purpose of

communication and can be learned in communicating with different people with

different cultures and lifestyle. Furthermore, as stated in the description of

Humanities and Social Sciences strand, this strand can improve communication

skills, therefore this can really help in these kind of situations especially during

an interview, and other actions that uses speaking skills to improve more.
Consequently, the theories presented are all related in the Humanities and

Social Sciences strand and proved that communication and self-determination

and awareness are important in everyone’s lives.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework expect to encourage grade 10 students who are

upcoming senior high school student to take the Humanities and Social Sciences

strand for their senior high school to improve their skills in communication and

awareness by providing it’s benefits and advantages.

From this framework, grade 10 pupils will be encouraged to take

Humanities and Social Sciences as their strand in senior high school that really

helps in enhancing communication skills and society awareness.

The conceptual framework of this study was illustrated in an IV-DV

model that shows the patterns used in the study.

Memorial College will pick Humanities and Social Sciences as their strand

in senior high school to enhance their skills and talents.

Significance of the Study

This study explains the benefits of enrolling in the HUMSS strand in Senior

High School to incoming grade 11 students. The study of the advantages of

pursuing the HUMMS Strand in senior high school is important for a number of

reasons, such as the development of strong communication and critical thinking

skills, a thorough comprehension of social and cultural issues, readiness for

college courses in the humanities and social sciences, and a variety of possible

career paths in journalism, law, education, psychology, and social work. Improve

communication skill - Students in the humanities and social sciences can improve

their communication skills by learning how to use nonverbal cues, actively listen,

and think about the social dimensions of speaking and writing.

Self-development - Through in-depth study of humanities and social

science courses, self-development in the HUMSS strand mainly focusses on

developing critical thinking, effective communication, cultural awareness, and

social responsibility.
Scope and Limitation of the Study

This research focuses on persuading upcoming senior high school students

to take the Humanities and Social Sciences strand as their track in senior high

school. The participants of this study are twenty (20) grade 10 students who are

taking a different strand in senior high school and fifteen (15) grade 12 students

who takes the Humanities and Social Sciences strand. The study was conducted

during the second semester of school year 2024-2025. The advantages of taking

Humanities and Social Sciences strand for upcoming senior high school students

are answered in the study.

Definition of Terms

Students. The researchers target in persuasion to take the Humanities and

Social Sciences strand.

Humanities. One of the characteristic that grade 10 student will learn in

taking the Humanities and Social Science strand.

Public Speaking. Students will be more confident speaking in front of the

public with the help of taking the Humanities and Social Sciences strand.

Persuasion. The goal of this research is to persuade students to take the

Humanities and Social Sciences strand in Senior High School.

Personal Development. Students will learn more about their selves and

their surroundings if they take the Humanity strand.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This section contains the researcher review based on different sources,

including books, journal, unpublished resources and the internet.

Global

(Tufail, 2022) Although students who major in Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have higher starting pay than art majors,

by the age of 40, salaries between them are basically the same. Studying a subject

because you have a genuine interest in it will always be more fulfilling than

picking a major out of obligation.

(University of Oxford, 2023) The report, called “The Value in the

Humanities” used an innovative methodology to understand how humanities

graduates have fared over their whole careers. Humanities graduates develop

resilience, flexibility, and skills to adapt to challenging and changing labor

markets. Humanities careers open a path to success I a wide range of employment.

(Jaschik, 2021) 90 percent of humanities graduates are happy with their

lives, about the same as graduates of other fields. Humanities graduates work in

a wide variety of fields, counter to “the stereotype of humanity majors as

baristas”. Humanities graduates works in management, in sales, in business, and

in technology, not just the expected categories of education and arts.

(Pedersen , Gronvad, & Hvidtfeldt, 2020) This article explores the current

literature on ‘research impact’ in social sciences and humanities (SSH). It has a

primary objective to examine key methodological components used to assess

research impact comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

The study finds that research impact is highly complex and contested concept in

SSH literature. The research concludes that there is considerable room for

researchers, universities, and funding agencies to establish impact assessment

tools directed towards specific missions while avoiding catch-all indicators and

universal metrics.

(Doige, Doyle , & Hogan, 2020) This article is considered as successful

institution. However, in the twenty – first century, ingoing neoliberal educational

reform has been accompanied by a growing epistemological crisis in the meaning

and value of the humanities and social sciences (HASS). It is argued that these

reports provide an opportunity for emerging universities to reflect on their

research priorities and developmental strategies. The article concludes with some

reflections on the wider consequences of the globalizing of the university system,

the increase of China’s influence in Asia and ponders the prospect of post-

humanist futures of the humanities.

Local

(Vendiola, 2024) The students generally have a high preference for

auditory, reading and writing, and kinesthetic learning styles. In terms of

presenting information, students prefer auditory and kinesthetic more than visual

and reading and writing. In contrast, the student academic performance in English

was very satisfactory. There was a positive correlation between academic

performances and the extent to which students engaged in reading and writing.

Student who prefer reading and writing and kinesthetic methods perform better

academically. This highlights the significance of considering diverse learning

methods to enhance students’ academic performance in English.

(Ayeras , et al., 2024) Social Anxiety is one of the most prevalent

mental health issues students experience. This study analyzes relative impacts of

social anxiety on high school students’ academic performance and self-esteem,

and evaluates what stimulates social anxiety problems among high school
(Macalino, 2023) It determined the effectiveness of process approach in

teaching writing in Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) learners. The study

focused on the use of process approach is divided into five segments: prewriting,

drafting, revising, editing, up to publishing phase. In gathering data, observation,

focus group discussion, survey questionnaire with descriptive scale and the scores

of students written output were used. The results were shown based on the

evaluation of experts, teachers, and students of Grade 11 HUMSS. The crafted

learning guide was rated “Very Much Useful” by the experts. Therefore, the use

of the learning guide in writing will be effective in enhancing HUMSS senior

high school students writing skills under the process approach. This will help

them create quality output ready for publishing.

(Lopez, 2023) The researcher investigated the relationship between

language-learning strategies and writing performance of Grade 12 Humanities

and Social Science learners. Seventy-nine (79) learners from Nagpayong High

School served as the respondents of this study that utilized descriptive-correlation

design. The adopted research instruments were Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for

Language Learners and the CUNY Assessment Test in Writing. To ensure the

accuracy and facilitation of data analysis, percentage and arithmetic mean, and

Spearman rho correlation were utilized through the help of SPSS (Statistical
Product and Service Solution) software. It was found out that the majority of the

Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Strand learners utilized a variety of

language-learning strategies, especially metacognitive and social strategies.

Despite some errors in writing mechanics, the results of their writing assessment

were still within the competent category. It was concluded that among all the

strategies, cognitive and compensation strategies were found to be related to the

respondents writing performance. Among the recommendations were the

following: (a) students practicing memory strategies in language learning; (b)

teachers’ consideration of multisensory activities to strengthen recall of lesson;

(c) curriculum developers’ creating worksheets and activities for implicit and

explicit learning---most especially in writing mechanics; and (d) teachers’

promoting awareness of the use of the language strategies, especially

compensation.

(Redolosa , et al., 2024) One of the academic strands offered by the

Philippines Education in the Senior High School department is the Humanities

and Social Sciences (HUMSS) which encapsulates branches of knowledge in

science. This was in the Philippines order 10533. Anchored on DepEd Order 51,

s 2015, students who intend to study Humanities and Social Sciences in higher

education should enroll in the Humanities and Social Science. This study aims to

examine the landing station of HUMSS graduates of the Division of Bais City.
The study is enlightened by the theory of descriptive phenomenology by the

philosopher Edmund Husserl. The Husserlian descriptive phenomenology design

was used for this qualitative study. The researchers separately performed one-on-

one interviews in the study of the lived experience of HUMSS graduates, which

helped to get a holistic sense and consciousness relating to the full experiences of

the participants.

Chapter 3

Research Methodology

This chapter present the research methodology that is used in the entire

study. This is consist of the research design, population and sampling techniques,

research procedure, research instrument, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The qualitative method was used in conducting the study to spread

knowledge about the advantages of taking Humanities and Social Sciences for

upcoming Senior High School students at Marcelino Fule Memorial College. A

qualitative method is consist of interviews, surveys, and face to face

communication from different participant. Qualitative research aims to address

questions concerned with developing an understanding of the meaning and

experience dimensions of humans’ lives and social worlds (Allan, 2020)

The overall approach will be case study because this method is a process

of researchers to record every detailed consideration that is given to the

development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time. It is

also something that can be used or analyzed in order to illustrate a thesis or a

principle. Case study could also be described as an examples and settings where

the problem or phenomenon can be examined. (Salmons , 2021)

Population and Sampling

The researchers interviewed seventeen (17) upcoming grade 11 students

from Marcelino Fule Memorial College. The students were between the ages of

fifteen (15) to seventeen (17) years old. Out of the seventeen (17) respondents.

This study looked at grade 10 students at Marcelino Fule Memorial College

(MFMC) think about taking Humanities and Social Science classes in Grade 11.

We talked to seventeen (17) students out of a total of sixty two (62) Grade 10

students. The researchers asked them about what they want in the future, and what

they exactly feel about these questionnaires. Researchers found some common

ideas from their answers and used these to understand their views better. This
helps us suggest ways to improve how these questions are taught at Marcelino

Fule Memorial College. In this part of the study it shows what students think

about the value of Humanities and Social Sciences, which can help make these

classes more interesting and helpful for them.

Research Procedure

The research study started during the second semester of school year 2024-

2025 on February 2025 the researchers made three titles to choose for their

research. All the titles were approved and revised by the practical research

teacher. The research proposal, including the title and chapter 1-3, was prepared

in regular consultation with the researcher’s adviser, Ms. Jessibel Gaspado

Fabella. Online questionnaires were developed for data gathering, followed by

asking permission through all grade 10 student’s advisers to distribute the

questionnaires to grade 10 students at Marcelino fule Memorial College. After all

data is collected, the researchers reviewed the data gathered from the students.

Each data was checked carefully on which strand they will choose for the next

school year that is connected and useful for their future careers. Suggestions and

recommendations are also stated in each questionnaires given to every student for

future studies.
Instrument of the Study

Questionnaires and interviews are carefully studied by the researchers as

the instrument of coping up data for the study. Researchers was helped by Sir.

Jommel Baldo in spreading questionnaires to grade 10 students at Marcelino Fule

Memorial College. Snowball sampling was used to participants to potentially

contribute in the research, such as aspiring Humanities and Social Sciences

students, even those students who wants to take a different strand for their senior

high school journey.

Snowball sampling according to (Simkus, 2023) is often used in qualitative

research especially when participants is hard to reach or hidden. In addition, she

also stated that snowball sampling technique is continued until the desired sample

size is reached.

CHAPTER IV

of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand? 2) How do you think

the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand will contribute to their

development as a student in terms of Academic development, Personal

development, and Career development? 3) What are the common factors

influencing students' decisions to choose or not to choose the HUMSS strand at

Marcelino Fule Memorial College? 4) Do you value/get anxiety when it comes

to presenting up in front? Mainly in public speaking? 5) Are you having a hard

time speaking in English and also communicating with people? 6) Do you self-

fear of public speaking. This qualitative research explored the perceived

advantages of choosing the Humanities and Social Science (HUMMS) strand

among incoming Grade 11 students at Marcelino Fule Memorial College. The

researcher also aimed to determine whether students selected the strand solely

based on academic preference or as a step toward becoming part of a more

knowledgeable compassionate and dynamic society. Notably 17 students

expressed that choosing Humanities and Social science (HUMMS) was their way

of contributing to a more understanding and socially aware community. They
