Synthesis #2

The document discusses the considerations for establishing a wind farm, highlighting the importance of location, visual impact, and cost. It notes that wind turbines can be noisy and visually disruptive, particularly in urban areas, and emphasizes the need to balance these factors with the cost-effectiveness of wind energy compared to other energy sources. Ultimately, the decision to create a wind farm should be made thoughtfully to minimize controversy and maximize benefits.

An image taken by Joshua Winchell, pictures hundreds of wind turbines

decorating its land. A mountain sits in the backdrop, clashing sharply with the enamel

white, spinning machine that harnesses the wind (photo). It is there to protect the

environment and in order to do so it sits, planted firmly into the ground like trees. Why?

What are the merits? The disadvantages? This is what one asks when deciding to

create a wind farm.

The most important factors when an individual or agency should consider when

establishing a wind farm, are the location, impact on surrounding beauty, and the cost.

Wind farms have the potential to be incredibly obnoxious pieces of machinery

depending on the location. The Acoustic technology institute found that people

associated wind farms and their unique and unsettling noise with “annoyance, sleep

disruption, and associated stress” (Seltenrich). These attributes have the potential to be

serious issues. The feeling of agitation caused by the constant whirring of these

machines would make it understandably difficult to perform everyday tasks. Coupling

this with a few hours of sleep the body will hardly be able to function properly. This is

why the location of these farms are such an important factor to consider. Communities

of urban and suburban areas would find much discontent with the noise for the reasons

aforementioned. In more rural areas however, there is more room to place these

machines away from people, maintaining the ambience for densely populated areas.

Another important factor to consider is the natural beauty around the planned

location of the wind farm. Troy Rule recognizes this factor as an essential one stating,

“Unable to camouflage or shrink the size of utility-scale wind turbines, wind energy

developers must often find ways to assuage locals' concerns about the potential visual
impacts of these enormous devices” (Rule). The sight of wind turbines are impossible to

ignore. As mentioned by Rule they stick out like a sore thumb, with their white metallic

look towering over its surroundings. This can be incredibly annoying for many onlookers

when these massive, impossible to ignore pieces of machinery are in front of their

houses, parks, and natural environment. Just as it is off putting to see piles of trash in

nature it is also annoying to see pieces of industry overshadowing beautiful trees,

mountains, flowers, lakes, and on. If it ruins the views of the beauty around the farm, it

may not be worth putting up with the complaints, and criticism to start that farm.

An additional factor to consider in making a wind farm is costs. Wind costs

around $97/MWh. Though there are more expensive means of energy like solar,

petroleum and nuclear, there are also cheaper one’s like hydro, coal, and natural gas

which sit at $66/MWh (Molla). Depending on the use of the energy it may be better to

opt for a cheaper or more expensive form of energy. If one is able to use one of the

cheaper forms of energy for their purpose effectively it may be best to use it over wind

energy. Similarly with more expensive forms of energy, if wind energy is not effective for

the purpose then if able, they should utilize a more expensive energy source. Wind

energy serves as a perfect balance between cost and effectiveness, and if that is what

someone needs, this would be the best option.

Ultimately it is up to the individual and agency to determine if they will create a

wind farm. However, to ensure little controversy, problems, and maximum profit these

factors should be considered carefully and deliberately.
