Transportation And Tourism

How can the global tourism industry balance the economic benefits of
mass tourism with the preservation of local cultures and environments,
particularly in over-touristed destinations?

INTRO:
Tourism can make or break a country's economy especially cultural and
historical travel which accounts for 40% of the travel worldwide. In recent
years tourism has impacted countries very positively by increasing their
GDP and it's a good source of employment, cultural promotion, revenue
generation and proves to be a great source of economic growth and
development. On the other contrary, there are quite a few negative effects
of this as well like living costs increase due to too many crowds of people
filling up the country which also results in more traffic, destruction of the
environment, depletion of resources and could result in loss of cultural
heritage and because of this the actual beauty that attracted those people
in the first place would be destroyed. Talking about a local perspective,
people of Barcelona were driven out of the real estate market as the
number of homes available for rent has significantly decreased, destroying
their local culture and environment.

The delicate balance between the economic benefits of

international tourism and the pressing need to preserve the
cultures and environments of the places we visit, especially those
that are suffering from overtourism, is the reason I chose this
topic. How can we enjoy the wonders of travel without destroying
the very things that make those places so special? That struck me
as a crucial issue in our globalized world. I want to investigate the
intricate connection between turning a profit and protecting our
cultural legacy, and I think the travel and tourism sector has an
ethical duty to find solutions that benefit all parties. The challenge
of coming up with fresh, innovative ways to protect communities'
distinctive cultures and natural resources while allowing them to
profit economically appeals to me.
In this report we will be talking furthermore about why tourism is so
important for a country's economic growth, why preserving a countries
cultural heritage, environment and people is very important and we will also
be talking about more strategies implemented by other countries and
strategies that should be implemented by all countries to address the
issues caused by mass tourism.

Global Perspective:
Balancing the economic benefits of mass tourism with the
preservation of local cultures and environments in over-
touristed destinations is a complex challenge that requires a
versatile approach. There are many ways and organizations
countries around the world are using to balance mass tourism
with preservation of local cultures. First of all, we will be
talking about the most well-known organization that helps
countries all around the world the UNESCO World Heritage
and Sustainable Tourism Program which plans for tourism
and heritage management with dialogue and stakeholder
cooperations as its base. It aims to protect natural and
cultural heritage while still developing tourism industry. One
of its key goals is to strengthen the enabling environment
and culture by using Policys and frameworks. The world
travel and tourism council (WTTC) are another prominent
organization helping countries. The WTTC believes that travel
and tourism can contribute positively to the community in
which they are. They believe in the approach of destination
stewardship which is a collaborative effort to preserve a
destination's natural and cultural heritage while supporting
responsible tourism. It involves a variety of stakeholders,
including communities, businesses, and government
agencies. In recent years tourism has been at an all-time high
and with it overcrowding has also become an issue, to
counter this the WTTC urges communities more than ever to
start using the approach of destination stewardship to ensure
this mass tourism and overcrowding does not affect the
environment or the cultural heritage of the country. Last but
not least we have ICOMOS an organization whose aim is to
Promote the conservation, protection, use, and enhancement
of monuments, building complexes, heritage sites and the
cultural heritage of countries. They achieve this by providing
expert advice as they are the advisory body to UNESCO, and
they pick and choose the sites that UNESCO should focus on
and grant the world heritage status. They also give expert
courses and educational programs to schoolers in the field of
cultural heritage. ICOMOS also develops and promotes
international charters and guidelines for heritage
conservation, such as the ICOMOS International Cultural
Tourism Charter. These documents make sure that countries
use the best practices and ethical standards.

National Perspective: Pakistan

Pakistan faces a rising challenge with mass tourism,

especially in vulnerable regions like Gilgit-Baltistan. The
benefits of increased tourism are overshadowed by the
resulting environmental damage, and the erosion of local
cultural authenticity, all worsened by the country's
insufficient tourism management policies. To counter this
Pakistan is adopting the strategy of Eco-Tourism which
involves conserving the environment and culture in mass
visited areas. Pakistan is very strongly committed to
responsible travel and preserving the culture in the realm of
Eco-Tourism. In doing do there are a lot of organizations that
help like The Sustainable Tourism Foundation Pakistan (STFP)
which is a non-profit and non-political organization that
promotes sustainable tourism in Pakistan and works with the
government and private sector to ensure environmentally
responsible tourism, and the Pakistan Tourism Development
cooperation (PTDC) which is a public organization that
promotes and develops tourism in Pakistan, etc. Along with
help from these organizations Pakistan has also established
national parks, protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries to
preserve fragile ecosystems and safeguard endangered
species. Furthermore, Pakistan encourages involvement and
empowerment of local communities by engaging them in Eco-
Tourism activity's, this ensures that the local communities
are involved in conserving the environment and benefit from
it. These community-based initiatives provide economic
opportunities, improve livelihoods, and create a sense of
ownership and pride in protecting their natural resources.
Eco-Tourism in Pakistan offers a number of benefits. For
tourists, they get to immerse themselves in the breathtaking
beauty of Pakistan's natural landscape, they get to go on
hikes and runs through local villages, thousands of year-old
monuments and archeological sites to gain a deeper
understanding of the culture, tradition, and views of the
natives. Local communities are not unbriefed from the
benefits either as Eco-Tourism gives the locals increased
economic opportunities like job creation. Revenue generated
by Eco-tourism activities also directly contributes to the
infrastructure of that society like building of hospitals,
schools, and more.
