Enhancing Diagnostic Accuracy in Breast Ultrasound: A Transformative Approach at

Mzuzu Central Hospital

Background and Rationale
Breast cancer is a global health challenge, where early detection is crucial for effective treatment
and increased survival rates. At Mzuzu Central Hospital, the lack of advanced imaging
technologies like mammography and MRI complicates accurate breast cancer diagnosis.
Currently, the hospital relies solely on ultrasound imaging, where outcomes heavily depend on
the operator's expertise.
The absence of a permanent radiologist places significant diagnostic responsibility on ultrasound
technicians, whose varying training and experience levels can result in inconsistent outcomes.
This study seeks to evaluate these technicians' proficiency, identify skill gaps, and implement a
standardized ultrasound protocol. The goal is to enhance diagnostic reliability, thus improving
patient care at Mzuzu Central Hospital.
Research Objectives
1. Assess Technicians' Proficiency: Evaluate the current knowledge, skills, and practical
abilities of ultrasound technicians in breast imaging.
2. Identify Skill Gaps: Pinpoint specific areas where technicians need further expertise or
consistency in breast ultrasound diagnostics.
3. Develop a Standardized Protocol: Formulate and implement a practical breast
ultrasound protocol tailored to the hospital's resources.
4. Enhance Training: Design a targeted training program to improve technicians'
diagnostic accuracy and consistency.
Proposed Methodology
This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative data
collection. It includes all hospital ultrasound technicians and female patients undergoing breast
ultrasounds. We will use questionnaires, practical assessments, and case reviews to identify skill
gaps among technicians. A standardized protocol will be developed, covering patient preparation,
image acquisition, and consistent reporting systems. Training will be provided to both
technicians and clinicians to ensure a thorough understanding and accurate diagnostics. The
protocol will undergo pilot testing before full implementation. The study's impact will be
assessed through follow-up evaluations, audits, and staff feedback, adhering to ethical standards
and patient confidentiality.
Expected Outcomes and Impact
This initiative aims to transform breast cancer diagnostics at Mzuzu Central Hospital by
improving the skills of ultrasound technicians and clinicians. Implementing a standardized
protocol and comprehensive training is expected to yield reliable, consistent, and accurate
ultrasound images. Clinicians will be better equipped to interpret these results, leading to more
informed patient management decisions. This project aims to significantly reduce misdiagnoses,
enable earlier breast cancer detection, and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, it will
streamline workflow, reduce procedural variations, shorten patient waiting times, and enhance
overall care quality. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement and best practices
adherence, we aim to build trust and provide faster, more accurate care, ultimately reducing
breast cancer mortality.
Timeline for Completion:
• Months 1-2: Form research team, conduct literature review, secure ethical approvals, and
prepare study materials.
• Months 3-4: Assess ultrasound technicians' skills through questionnaires and practical
assessments.
• Months 5-6: Develop and refine the standardized ultrasound protocol.
• Months 7-8: Create training programs and prepare training modules.
• Months 9-10: Pilot test the protocol and conduct full-scale training.
• Months 11-13: Implement the protocol hospital-wide and monitor adherence.
• Months 14-15: Evaluate impact, analyze data, and prepare the final report.
• Month 16: Disseminate findings, conduct workshops, and publish results.
Budget (MWK):
• Personnel: 720,000
• Training & Workshops: 2,000,000
• Data Collection & Analysis: 230,000
• Protocol Development: 200,000
