l AGA8 Gross Method (SGERG)
AGA8 - 1985 is calculated to the requirements of the international standard issued in 1985 by the American Gas
Association Transmission Measurement Committee.
Density and Compressibility Factor are calculated in accordance with the Detail Characterisation method within this
standard.
Instructions :
Enter a temperature (in °C,°F or °K) and pressure (in psia, bara or MPa) under the Base Conditions section :
Under the Line Conditions section, you can choose from the following conditions :
If Constant Temperature and Pressure is chosen, you must enter a single temperature and pressure reading :
If Constant Temperature, Pressure range is chosen, you must enter a single temperature reading, along with a low and
high pressure reading and the increment (step) :
If Constant Pressure, Temperature range is chosen, you must enter a single pressure reading, along with a low and high
temperature reading and the increment (step) :
If the step size is too small, then an error message will be displayed when you select the Calculated Results tab :

Acknowledge the error by clicking on OK, and make the step size larger. The Calculated Results tab can display a
maximum of 20 sets of results, so if you specified, for example, a temperature range of 40 to 240 with step 10, then
FLOCALC™ would display an error, as this gives 21 sets of results. A temperature range of 40 to 230 step 10 would,
however, be acceptable.
You must then enter the gas composition as appropriate in their respective mole percentages. FLOCALC™ will
automatically calculate the normalised readings as each component is entered.
A graph of results is also available on this calculation, however this is only possible if a temperature or pressure range
has been selected under the Line Conditions section.
Move the mouse over the graphics for the Input Data and Calculated Results tabs below. When the mouse pointer
changes to a hand, you can click with the left mouse button to find out more information about that control.

The Standard (or Simplified) GERG TM5 1991 Virial Equation, equivalent to the AGA 8 Gross Characterisation
Method, has been implemented in this calculation to calculate the Compressibility Factor (Z) for Natural Gases. It
uses a restricted set of input variables in place of the detailed (13 component) compositional analysis required for the
Master equation.
The Density obtained directly from this calcualtion is on a mol basisis. Within the calcalution it can be converted to a
more useful mass basis either by utilising the inferrered molecular weight of the gas or by the PTZ method.
The simplified input data requirement comprises of Superior Calorific Value, Relative Density, Carbon Dioxide
Content together with pressure and temperature.
Provided the input parameters are within the following limits then the uncertainty in Z is expected to be less than ±
0.1%.
Calculation limits ;
Temperature -8 to 62 °C
Pressure 0 to 120 bar
Calorific value 19 to 48 MJ/m3
Relative Density 0.55 to 0.90
CO2 Content 0 to 30 mol %
If any of the above parameters are outside the calculation limits then the appropriate data entry field will be
highlighted in red and a warning message displayed.
Care is needed to ensure that the correct reference conditions for Calorofic Value and Relative Density are used. As a
guide the following reference conditions for combustion (t1) and metering (t2) is given ;
t1(°C) t2 (°C)

The calculated results tab displays the compressibility and the density at the selected base conditions and line
conditions.
The density units can be selected to display density on a mol (mol/L) or a mass (kg/m³ or lb/ft³) basis. If mass basis is
selected the user has the option to select if the mass density should be calculated using the molecular weight, derived
from with in the SGERG calculation, or by performing a standard PTZ calculation. If PTZ is selected the Reference
Density of Air 1.292923 or 1.2255, for 0 °C and 15 ° C respectively, will be selected automatically . If a base
temperature of anything other than 0 °C or 15 °C is selected then the user must enter the appropriate Reference
Density of Air.
