Define a server A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to systems on a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) over the Internet. • Many types of servers exist, including web servers, mail servers, and file servers. Each type runs software specific to the purpose of the server. For example, a Web server may run Apache HTTP Server or Microsoft IIS, which both provide access to websites over the Internet. A mail server may run a program like Exim or EMail, which provides SMTP services for sending and receiving email. A file server might use Samba or the operating system's built-in file sharing services to share files over a network. • A computer network in which one centralized, powerful computer (called the server) is a hub to which many less powerful personal computers or workstations (called clients) are connected. The clients run programs and access data that are stored on the server.

Server processors Xeon processor • The Xeon is a high-end Intel processor for enterprise servers and workstations that runs on compatible Xeon motherboards. Xeon processors use a Slot 2 form factor and are available in speeds starting at 400 MHz. Since the Nocona released in June 2004 all Intel Xeon processors are 64-bit processors.

Server memory • The purpose of server memory is to process data from the hard drive to the Central Processing Unit (CPU). By adding more memory or by increasing memory speed and bandwidth, servers will be able to handle more Virtual Machines (VMs) and to distribute their loads more effectively, helping businesses to run more efficiently. • The range of RAM can vary as well, with the average server ranging from 16 GB to 6 TB (that's a lot of RAM).

Server storage • Hard disk A hard drive is a component inside a computer. Something to store data / programs permanently. Usually the term “hard drive” refers to it being a set of metal plates inside a box • server hard disk is the core of the data warehouse, including all data and applications. • . It enables storage and access to small and large amount of data over a shared network or via the internet. A storage server is less powerful than a standard server..

How to choose the right server? • Starting with the 10th Generation of PowerEdge servers, the naming for the server models generally consist of a letter(s) followed by three or four numbers (ex: PowerEdge R710 or PowerEdge R6415 or MX740). • The letter indicates the type (form factor) of the server: • C = Cloud - Modular server nodes for hyper-scale environments • F = Flexible - Hybrid rack-based sleds for rack-based FX2/FX2s enclosure • M or MX* = Modular – • R = Rack-mountable servers • T = Tower Servers

Dell server (cont) • For three number naming convention: • The first number after the letter indicates the class of the system. With 1-3 being 1 CPU systems, 4 - 7 are 2 CPU systems, 8 can be 2 or 4 CPU's and 9 is 4 CPU's. • The second number indicates the generation, with 0 for 10th generation, 1 for 11th generation and so on. • The third number indicates the make of the CPU, 0 for Intel and 5 for AMD. • So, for example, the R710 model is a Rack 2 CPU system from the 11th generation of servers with Intel Processors.
