About the position

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NTNU seeks until three postdoctoral fellows within the field of metal forming.

The postdoctoral fellows will be part of the NTNU Aluminium Product Innovation Center (NAPIC), which is a collaboration between Faculty of
Engineering, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Architecture and Design. NAPIC is hosted by the Department of Mechanical and
Industrial Engineering, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering. The centre is a unique collaboration between NTNU, SINTEF, the aluminium
manufacturing industry and select customers, currently including 28 active Postdocs. The aim is to explore new-aluminum product opportunities,
employing a research-driven innovation approach based on cross-disciplinary collaboration between product design and development,
manufacturing, materials technology and product applications. The vision is to become a world leader in research-driven aluminium product
innovation.

NAPIC is part of the MANULAB - a Norwegian Manufacturing Laboratory Infrastructure project - where state-of-the-art laboratory technology for
aluminium forming, welding, assembly, assistive manufacturing and material characterization is available.

The position(s) will all be directly or indirectly related to industrial research projects primarily in the automotive actors, seeking to innovate within
product applications such as battery trays, chassis and suspension systems, safety/crashworthiness systems and components, etc.

With the current transformation to Industry 4.0, metal forming is subject to radical shifts towards increased flexibility and adaptivity of products,
machine tools, and processes, enabling a transition from conventional mass production towards highly flexible, customized production, with
reduced manufacturing investments and improved sustainability footprint.

You will report to the professor responsible for the project.

Duties of the position

The three positions and focal areas are as follows:

POSITION A: Develop a theoretical and operational framework that integrates mechanical product and process models and machine
learning for model-driven, in-line and real-time, adaptive control of forming of advanced aluminum products.

POSTITION B: Innovate, develop and demonstrate proof-of-concept concept for flexible tooling of aluminum stretch-bending processes.
The concept should offer the capability and the kinematics needed to digitally adjust (servo-mechanically or servo-hydraulically) the
shape of an integrated tooling to serve a set of different product configuration derived from the same product platform.

POSITION C: Develop a strategy and associated model for calibration of aluminum profiles in order to reduce geometrical variations
arising from extrusion, profile cooling and forming. Methods for calibration can be stretching, expansion and/or compressing, introducing
plasticity in the cross-section of the profiles to mechanically change the geometry, locally and/or globally, while improving dimensional
accuracy.

All areas described above will preferably be a combination of numerical and experimental studies, having access to cutting-edge laboratory
equipment for aluminium forming (3D-stretch-bending, tube bending, adaptive rotary bending etc), software and models for numerical simulation

and world leading academic/industry eco-system of research-based innovation within aluminium forming.
