APRIL MOCK EXAMINATION
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name, Centre number and candidate number in the spaces at the top of this page and your Centre
number and Candidate number on the top right corner of every page of this paper.
Answer all questions
All working must be clearly shown on the same sheet as the rest of the answer
Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.
If the degree of accuracy is not specified in the question and if the answer is not exact, the answer should be
given correct to two significant figures. Answers in degrees should be given correct to one decimal place.
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question
The total number of marks in this paper is 120
Mathematical tables, slide rules and calculators may be used to evaluate explicit numerical expressions.
b) regression [2]
2.
Draw the cumulative frequency graph to represent the data. Use your graph to estimate the median [4]
3a) Find the number of different arrangements of the 9 letters in the word ALLIGATOR in which the two As are
together and the two Ls are together [2]
b)Find the number of different selections of 5 letters from the 9 letters in the word ALLIGATOR which contain
at least one A and at most one L [3]
c) A flower shop has 5 yellow roses , 3 red and 2 white roses . martin chooses 3 roses at random.Draw up the
probability distribution table for the number of white roses Martin chooses [4]
4. When a genetic sequence of plant DNA is given a dose of radiation, some of the genes may mutate. The
probability that a gene mutates is 0.012. Mutations occur randomly and independently.
ai) Explain the meanings of the terms ‘randomly’ and ‘independently’ in this context. [2]
A short stretch of DNA containing 20 genes is given a dose of radiation.
ii)Find the probability that exactly 1 out of the 20 genes mutates. [2]
bi )Explain why a Poisson distribution is an appropriate approximating distribution for the number of genes that
mutate. [2]
Use this Poisson distribution to find the probability that there are
(ii)The manufacturers claim that at least 95% of these fans last longer than 45 000 hours. Is this claim valid?
[4]
(iii) Find the value of h for which 99.9% of these fans last h hours or more. [4]
6. A biologist is studying the behaviour of bees in a hive . Once a bee has located a source of food , it returns to
the hive and performs a dance to indicate to the other bees hpw far away the source of the food is. The dance
consists of a series of wiggles . The biologist records the distance ,d metres , of the food source from the hive
and the average number of wiggles , w,
dance
a) Calculate the product moment correlation coefficient for these data and comment [3]
b) Calculate the equation of the regression line of w on d , giving your answer in the form w=a+bd [4]
c) State the meaning of a and b in part (b) above [2]
7. ) The continuous random variable X is uniformly distributed over the interval [2,6]
a) Write down the probability density function f(x) [2]
Find
b E(X) [1]
C) Var (X) [2]
d) the cumulative distribution function of X , for all x, [2]
e) P(2.3<X<3.4) [2]
8. A magazine has a large number of subscribers who each pay a membership fee that is due on January 1 st each
year. Not all subscribers pay their fee by the due date .Based on correspondence from the subscribers, the editor
of the magazine believes that 40% of subscribers wish to change the name of the magazine. Before making this
FIRST CHOICE GROUP OF SCHOOLS EXAMINATIONS BOARD©
change the editor decides to carry out a sample survey to obtain the opinions of the subscribers .He uses only
those members who have paid their fee on time
a) identify the sampling units [1]
b) Give one advantage and one disadvantage that would have resulted from the editor using a census rather than
a sample survey [2]
c) As a pilot study the editor took a rando sample of 25 subscribers.
Assuming that the editor’s beliefs is correct , find the probability that exactly 10 of these subscribers agreed
with changing the name [3]
d The full survey is to be carried out using 200 randomly chosen subscribers.
Again assuming the editor’s belief to be correct and using a suitable approximation , find the probability
that in this sample there will be least 71 but fewer than 83 subscribers who agree to the name being changed
[5]
9. The number of computers breakdowns per months at a University were observed over period of 100 months
and summarised in the table below.
Frequency 15 25 30 21 9 0
10. a) In an election held in 2007, 60% of the voters voted for Party A. In a poll of opinion conducted last week,
250 potential voters were asked how they would vote if there was an election now. 135 of the voters said they
would vote for Party A. Investigate at 5% level of significance whether the proportion of the voters in favour of
A has decreased significantly. [7]
b) Ambulance Services claims that it takes an average of 8,9 minutes to respond to emergency calls. To verify
this claim, the Agency which licences ambulance services timed 50 responses to emergency calls. The observed
data gave a mean of 9,3 minutes and standard deviation of 1,8 minutes. Test at 5% significance level whether
there is evidence to justify Ambulance service’s claim[8].
11. Data from the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe shows that 42% of Zimbabweans eat breakfast every day.
Find the probability that in a random sample of 300 Zimbabweans, the number who eat breakfast every day is
i) at most 100 [6]
ii) from 130 to 140 [4]
i) Using five stems, plot a stem and leaf diagram for the above information. [3]
ii) Find the median. [1]
ii) Find the inter-quartile range. [3]
13. The probability that a boy hits a target is 0.8. Assuming that shots are independent of each other and suppose
that during each practice period, the boy fires shots until he hits the target.
i) Find the mean and standard deviation of the number of shots fired per practice period. [3]
ii) Find the probability that the boy will need to take at least five shots to hit thetarget. [2]
