ANNOTATION 4.

‘ BEFORE BREAKFAST ‘
~Eugene O’Neill
Reference : This lines are taken from the play ‘Before Breakfast’, written
by Eugene O’Neill, an American dramatist and the winner of the Nobel Prize
for Literature in 1936. He was born on 16 th October 1888. O’ Neill’s life is
reflected throught his plays in order to let out his true feelings.

Context : ‘ Before Breakfast ‘ shows an unhappily married couple living out

sad lives and the story tells of what could happen when dreams and
aspirations are dashed by cold reality and hardship. Non-verbal
communication dominates in this play which ends in sorrow. The husband’s
character (Mr. Alfred Rowland) in the play was intentionally kept off the stage
because the author wanted the plot, action and conflict to revolve around the
wife’s character (Mrs. Rowland).

Explanation : Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Rowland are the two characters involved in
the play. Mr. Alfred Rowland was son of millionaire. To which Mrs. Rowland
was attracted and thought they would be happy with the richness of Mr.
Alfred’s assets. The couple was married when Mrs. Rowland became pregnant
at a young age and the child was born dead. But Mr. Alfred Rowland’s father
died leaving heavy debts, left his son and daughter-in-law penniless. All the
aspirations and dreams were dashed by hardships and the harsh reality of life.

They were living in a very small apartment which had a small hall, a
bedroom and a kitchen. He was searching for a job while she was working
somewhere. Her income was not sufficient to make the both ends meet. She
rebukes him in the most unrestrained manner. Through her words, we can
understand that he would write poetry and liked art, but she doesn’t like that.
She did not give any respect to him. She was continuously abusing her
husband. We know Helen through the letter Mrs. Rowland has read. The letter
is found in the coat pocket of Mr. Alfred. She may be one of the admirers of
Alfred and she has written a letter expressing the same. There can be mutual
liking between Alfred and Helen and it may be misunderstood by Mrs.
Rowland. But Mrs. Rowland has made an issue and declared that she will not
divorce him. She accuses that Helen must be a street walker, but there is no
response from Alfred so that we can have clear information about Helen.

Mr. Rowland was weak both physically and mentally as well. He is

writings. His nature is not dynamic and so he is unable to get even a small job

to support his family. He was depressed and his depression contributes to a
self destructive lifestyle. In the end he decided to commit suicide. That is the
reason, Mrs. Rowland was the only speaking character and her husband,
Alfred was silent in the play. The play ends tragically.

Comment : ‘ Before Breakfast ‘ reflects an unhappily married couple living

out sad lives in an apartment and the story tells of what could happen when
dreams and aspirations are dashed by cold reality and hardship. As a result,
we saw two desperate people struggling with one another in a downward
spiral. Mrs. Rowland has lost whatever pleasantness she once possessed, and
has descended into a state of personal neglect, alcoholism, and bitter
selfishness. Mr. Alfred Rowland was depressed with his life, can’t support his
family and ends his life in tragedy.

ANNOTATION 5 .‘ SIR ISAAC NEWTON ’

~Nathaniel Hawthorne
Reference : These lines are taken from the Biography, “SIR ISAAC
NEWTON “, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. He is remembered as the
author of the Great American novels ‘The Scarlet Letter’ and ‘The House of
the Seven Cables’. The present biography ‘Sir Isaac Newton’ is written
by him. Hawthorne describes Newton’s multifarious achievements. He
portrayed the life and inventions of Sir Isaac Newton and also his varied
interest in the subjects such as mathematics, dynamics, astronomy, optics
and cosmology.

Context : Sir Isaac Newton’s multifarious achievements had been

described by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In this biographical essay, Newton’s
childhood - as a student his discoveries, as a young man - his achievements
and as a scientist - his interests in mathematics, dynamics, astronomy,
optics and cosmology was described.
Explanation : Sir Isaac Newton was born, at a small village of
Woolsthrope, in England. His mother left him to the care of his good old
grandmother, who was very kind and sent him to school. As a Child, he was
not a very bright scholar, but was remarkable for his mechanical
occupations. The neighbours and his grandmother were anticipated, if
Isaac would become a Carpenter. Others probably thought that he would
become an architect. Isaac made a Water – Clock, which would run by the
dropping of water and made a Sun – Dial for his grandmother to know the
time. His friends advised Isaac’s grandmother to apprentice him to a
Clockmaker.

As Newton grew up he was curious about the wind mill. He made
another better one. Later he observed the stars, planets, galaxies and
wondered what kept them in their places and courses. He observed them
with a telescope. One day he sat under an apple tree and suddenly an apple
fell on his head and it made him think about the force of gravitation. He
was instrumental in the scientific revolution. He published his most
acclaimed work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which
has been called the single most influential book on physics. Newton’s first
major public scientific achievement was designing and constructing a
reflecting telescope in 1668. As a professor at Cambridge, Newton was
required to deliver an annual course of lectures and choose optics as his
initial topic. He used his telescope to study optics and help prove his theory
of light and color. The royal society asked for a demonstration of his
reflecting telescope in 1671, and the organization’s interest encouraged
Newton to publish his notes on light, optics and color in 1672. These notes
were later published as a part of Newton’s optics, inflections and colours of
light. He was acquired to great renown, and was made a Member of
Parliament, and received the honour of knighthood from the king.
Comment : Sir Isaac Newton was a great English physicist and
mathematician most famous for his law of gravitation. Though he left the
earth, we may believe that he is still searching out the infinite wisdom and
goodness of the Creator. He has left a fame behind him, which will be as
endurable as if his name were written in letters of light, formed by the
stars upon the midnight sky.
