Thoughts about Promotion of Common Good

 Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good
men to do nothing."
 We have witnessed wickedness in many forms in every domain of society, and we
have suffered from its consequences.
 We must learn that to dispel darkness, light must shine brighter and brighter,
Therefore, good works guided in righteousness must proliferate, subdue and
swallow wickedness hence, the need to promote common good.

 But how do we promote the common good? Frist, we must be free and be healed
from selfish interest nature constituting wickedness, dark or in our present term
"social ills" to effect the change and transformation. (Contributor to the social ills)
 The realization of the common good can only happen through repentance and the
love of God. We need healing from the illness of our society such as sexual
immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility and lack of self-control),
idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions,
factions, envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, greediness, and others.

 The result of a changed and transformed life which is a powerful agent to cause a
chain reaction of common good is love (unselfish concern for others), joy, inner
peace, patience (How we act while waiting), kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-discipline.
 Having possessed all these, we become the light that exposes darkness.
 We must realize that to promote the common good there is more to simple acts of
kindness - that a changed life can also transform another life.
 We can be the avenue for other's healing, better welfare, and further development
 If we are in the legislative branch of the government, legislate laws which will
promote the common good and do away with legislation that do not contribute to
the betterment of the lives of the people. If we are in the executive branch,
faithfully follow and implement the laws so that people will know that the rule of
law is not dead. If we are in the judiciary, truthfully administer the rule of law and
protect justice. If we are private citizens, be selfless and follow the simple rules
and laws, and love your fellow countrymen as you love yourself. These simple
steps can go extra miles in promoting the common good. How about you? What
can you do to promote the common good in you own little way?

"There is no higher religion that human service. To work for the common good is the
greatest creed" -Woodrow Wilson

Common Good in Family

Practicing the common good within a family involves making intentional decisions and
adopting behaviors that prioritize the well-being of all family members and contribute to
the greater good of society. Here are some ways to practice the common good in the
family:

1. Promote Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication

among family members. Create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable
expressing their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Listen actively and respectfully to
each other's perspectives, and work together to find solutions that benefit the entire
family. (Show Video: Lucky me - malayong lamesa) (Feedback)

2. Foster Mutual Respect: Cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect and

understanding within the family. Treat each family member with dignity and kindness,
and value their unique contributions and perspectives. Teach children the importance of
respecting others' boundaries, opinions, and differences.

3. Share Responsibilities Equitably: Distribute household responsibilities fairly

among family members based on age, ability, and availability. Encourage everyone to
contribute to household chores, meal preparation, and other tasks to promote a sense of
shared responsibility and teamwork.

4. Prioritize Quality Time Together: Make time for regular family bonding
activities and shared experiences. Whether it's having meals together, playing games, or
going on outings, prioritize spending quality time as a family to strengthen relationships,
build connections, and create cherished memories.

5. Support Each Other's Goals: Encourage and support each family member in
pursuing their individual goals and aspirations. Celebrate achievements and milestones
together, and offer encouragement and assistance during challenging times. Foster an
environment where everyone feels empowered to pursue their passions and dreams.

6. Practice Empathy and Compassion: Cultivate empathy and compassion

within the family by recognizing and validating each other's emotions and experiences.
Show empathy towards family members who may be going through difficult times, and
offer support and comfort when needed. Teach children the importance of kindness,
empathy, and helping others.

7. Model Ethical Behavior: Lead by example and model ethical behavior and
moral values for your family. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and fairness in your actions
and decisions, and teach children the importance of acting with integrity and treating
others with respect and kindness.

8. Contribute to the Community: Engage in acts of service and volunteerism as

a family to give back to the community and contribute to the common good. Participate
in local charity events, volunteer at community organizations, or organize donation
drives to support those in need. Instill in children a sense of social responsibility and the
importance of making a positive difference in the world.
By practicing these principles and values within the family, you can promote the
common good, strengthen family bonds, and instill a sense of social responsibility and
civic-mindedness in your children.

V. Eliminate: to Promote common good to self

To promote the common good of the family, a family man may need to eliminate certain
behaviors or attitudes that hinder harmony, growth, and well-being within the family
unit. Here are some things that a family man may consider eliminating:

1. Selfishness: Putting one's own needs and desires above those of the family
can create tension and conflict. By prioritizing the collective welfare of the family
over individual interests, a family man fosters a sense of unity and cooperation.

2. Lack of Communication: Communication breakdowns can lead to

misunderstandings and resentment among family members. Eliminating barriers to
effective communication, such as withholding information or avoiding difficult
conversations, promotes openness, trust, and understanding within the family.

3. Dishonesty: Being dishonest or deceitful undermines trust and undermines the

foundation of a healthy family dynamic. Eliminating dishonesty and practicing
honesty, transparency, and integrity fosters a culture of trust and authenticity
within the family.

4. Neglect: Neglecting the emotional, physical, or spiritual needs of family

members can cause feelings of isolation and abandonment. Eliminating neglect
involves actively engaging with and supporting each family member, nurturing
strong bonds and a sense of belonging.

5. Conflict Avoidance: Avoiding conflict may seem like a way to maintain peace,
but unresolved conflicts can fester and cause long-term damage to family
relationships. Eliminating the tendency to avoid conflict and instead addressing
issues openly and constructively promotes resolution, growth, and reconciliation
within the family.

6. Authoritarianism: Ruling with an iron fist and demanding unquestioning

obedience can create a culture of fear and resentment in the family. Eliminating
authoritarian parenting styles and instead adopting a more democratic and
participatory approach empowers family members to express themselves and
contribute to decision-making processes.

7. Materialism: Excessive focus on material possessions and financial success

can lead to prioritizing wealth over relationships and personal fulfillment.
Eliminating materialism and emphasizing non-material values such as love,
compassion, and quality time strengthens family bonds and promotes emotional
well-being.

8. Negative Parenting Patterns: Replicating negative parenting patterns from

one's own upbringing can perpetuate cycles of dysfunction and trauma within the
family. Eliminating harmful parenting behaviors and seeking support to develop
healthier, more nurturing parenting practices can break these cycles and create a
more positive family environment.

9. Unhealthy Habits: Engaging in unhealthy habits such as substance abuse,

excessive screen time, or poor eating habits can negatively impact family dynamics
and overall well-being. Eliminating these habits and adopting healthier lifestyle
choices sets a positive example for family members and promotes physical and
emotional health.
10. Resistance to Change: Stubbornly clinging to outdated traditions or resisting
necessary changes can hinder family growth and adaptation. Eliminating resistance
to change and embracing flexibility, innovation, and growth promotes resilience and
adaptability within the family unit.

Promoting Common Good in Jail Setting

Promoting the common good inside a jail cell with a population of around 100 Persons
Deprived of Liberty (PDL) involves creating a supportive and respectful environment
where individuals can live with dignity, safety, and a sense of community. Here are some
strategies to promote the common good in such a setting:

1. Establish Clear Rules and Expectations: (Rules of BJMP, Rules for PDL,
Rules for Jail Volunteers, Rules for Visitors) Develop and communicate clear rules
and expectations for behavior within the jail cell, focusing on mutual respect,
cooperation, and adherence to safety protocols. Encourage PDL to take ownership of
their environment and contribute to its upkeep and orderliness.

2. Foster a Sense of Community: Create opportunities for PDL to come together

as a community, fostering relationships (Makipagkaibigan), solidarity (Magkaisa), and
mutual support (Magtulungan). Encourage group activities such as discussions,
recreational games, or shared meals to promote social connections and a sense of
belonging.

3. Conflict Resolution: Implement effective conflict resolution mechanisms to

address disputes and tensions within the jail cell promptly and peacefully. Train PDL in
conflict resolution skills and provide access to mediators or counselors who can facilitate
dialogue and reconciliation.

4. Promote Health and Hygiene: Emphasize the importance of personal

hygiene, cleanliness, and health practices to prevent the spread of illness and maintain
overall well-being. Provide access to hygiene products, sanitation facilities, and regular
health screenings to support PDL in maintaining their health.

5. Encourage Educational and Skill-Building Activities: Offer educational

programs, skill-building workshops, and vocational training opportunities within the jail
cell to promote personal growth, development, and empowerment. Provide access to
books, educational materials, and resources to support learning and self-improvement.

6. Respect for Diversity and Inclusion: Foster a culture of respect for diversity
and inclusion, recognizing and valuing the unique backgrounds, experiences, and
perspectives of all individuals within the jail cell. Promote tolerance (pagpapahalaga sa
pagkakaiba-iba), empathy (pagdamay), and understanding among PDL to create a more
harmonious and cohesive community.

7. Support Mental Health and Well-Being: Prioritize mental health and well-
being by offering counseling services, support groups, and mental health resources to
PDL who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, or emotional challenges. Provide
opportunities for relaxation, meditation, or mindfulness practices to promote emotional
resilience and coping skills.
