Measuring time
Speedometer
A speedometer is a meter which measures the speed of the vehicle.
A cable is connected to a shaft, which turns the wheels.
When the shaft turns the wire in the cable turns too.'
At the other end of the wire is a magnet. The magnet is surrounded by a metal cup.
When the wire turns, the magnet spins, hence the cup also turns. The cup is made
to turn proportionately to the spinning magnet.
The cup is connected to a spring and a magnet.
The spring prevents the cup from spinning, but allows it to turn further when the
vehicle's speed increases.
The pointer turns along with the cup and moves across the scale of the
speedometer dial.
Stop watch
A stop watch works in the following way
1. The stop watch is started as the object passes the start line and is stopped when
the object passes the finish line.
2. The distance travelled by the object is measured.
3. This distance is then divided by the time measured by the stopwatch.
4. This gives the speed of the object.
Light gates
In a light gate a beam of light is shined onto a light-sensitive switch.
When the beam of light used at the start of the speed test is broken by the object
passing through it, the switch stars an electronic stop watch.
When the beam of light used at the end of the speed test is broken by the object
passing through it, it causes the electronic stop watch to stop.
The speed of the object is found by dividing, the distance covered by the object by
the time measured by the stop watch.
Velocity
The velocity of an object is its speed and direction of movement.
