What is MLA? It’s the Modern Language Association’s guide for formatting essays and creating a “Works Cited.”.
Why do I Cite Sources? If you fail to give proper credit to your sources when you use someone else’s words using
MLA format, you are plagiarizing.
What is Parenthetical Citation? It is when a writer uses another person’s writing word for word (quotation) or
another person’s ideas (paraphrasing) in their own essays. These instances need to be cited to show the source.
Citations look like this: (Author’s Last Name Page Number) (Smith 73).
When you have a direct quote there is the closing quotation mark, parentheses containing the author’s last name, and
a page number if there is one, THEN a period. “quoted material” (Author Page).
When you quotes short pieces of dialogue use single quotation marks (‘ ‘) inside the double quotation marks (“ “) to
indicate that someone is speaking. ‘“quoted dialogue’” (Author Page).
What is a “Works Cited” Page? It is a list of all the sources you cite in your paper. Keep the following in mind:
1. The “Works Cited” is always the last page of your essay or report. Title it “Works Cited.”
2. Sources are listed alphabetically by the first word of name in the entry.
3. There are rules of formatting the spacing, punctuation, indentation of a works cited page.
