A life of crime …
IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM
We love animals, especially our pets, but did you know that these cute
creatures sometimes break the law?
Most cats catch birds and mice, then bring them home for their owners, but not
Oscar the tabby cat. He steals from neighbors’ yards. Every day he arrives home
with socks and underwear from clothes lines, gardening gloves, toys, and other
small items. Oscar’s owners don’t know what to do. How do you stop a cat’s
criminal activities? They can’t return the stolen goods because there are too
many of them, and they don’t know who they belong to. Instead, they’ve asked
local residents to report missing items to them. They then invite the victims of
Oscar’s crimes to identify their belongings from among his collection.
Oscar’s not the only cat with criminal habits. There’s Birgit the cat in
New!Zealand, who specializes in stealing men’s socks, and a cat named
Sir-Whines-A-Lot in the US, who steals money. He’s an office cat and when
customers are paying, he waits for an opportunity to take some money. He!got
caught when an employee discovered a small pile of cash on the floor!one
morning. When the office explained what was happening on social media and
that they’d given Sir-Whines-A-Lot’s illegal earnings to charity, they!received
more contributions from their customers!
Anyone who’s tried eating sandwiches on the beach will know that seagulls don’t
just eat fish. Seagulls are bigger than you’d think and can become aggressive
when they’re trying to get your tasty snack. There’s a seagull in Scotland that
doesn’t just steal food, but shoplifts, too! This criminal bird regularly hangs
out outside a bakery. He waits until there aren’t any customers in the store,
then walks in, helps himself to a bag of chips, and carries it outside to eat.
The owners are so used to it that they don’t say anything any more and the
shoplifting seagull has become a local celebrity.
People say that the octopus is an intelligent animal, but Otto, who lives in an
aquarium in Germany, has a criminal mind. He uses his intelligence to cause
chaos. He regularly commits small crimes such as throwing rocks at the glass wall
of his tank, but his most serious crime so far was to cause an electricity blackout
at the aquarium on three nights in a row. Despite their investigations, the staff
couldn’t find the cause of the blackout. They agreed that the only solution was
to spend the night in the aquarium and watch. That’s how Otto got caught.
When he climbed to the top of his tank and shot water at the light above it,
the electricity was automatically shut off for safety.
Then there’s the crow in Canada who disrupted a crime-scene investigation by
flying away with a knife. The police reported that an officer had chased the bird
until it dropped the knife!
And finally, there’s Jack the husky in the US who has been banned from entering
the state of Maryland, but nobody knows why!

A How crime makes people rich
B The reasons people become criminals
C The best way to prevent crime

POVERTY IS THE CAUSE OF CRIME

1 Crime is a serious problem in every country around the world. Some people think that one of the main
causes of crime is poverty. Other people have claimed that poverty does not have a direct link to crime.
2 a , there are many reasons why people commit crimes and poverty is one of them.
For example, a teenager who has no money, but wants the same sneakers as his or her classmates,
goes!out and shoplifts them.
b
3 , it isn’t just poor people who commit crimes. Wealthy people with good jobs,
nice homes, and loving families also break the law. However, they generally commit different types
of crimes for a variety of reasons. c , they may be risk-takers and enjoy the thrill.
d
, children from a poor family with a very caring mother and father are unlikely
to!commit a crime. They have love and security, and they’re happy.
e
4 , the main reason for teenagers and young adults committing crimes is a lack of
support from their families and people around them. They often feel unloved and they have few good
role models.
f
5 , poverty is undoubtedly a cause of crime, but it is not the only one.
Governments need to improve living standards for all their citizens and we must all try to give more
support to children and teenagers in need.
