Edit-Way 5.0

Introduction

0
0- INTRODUCTION
This USER'S MANUAL is a step-by-step guide for using the standard version
of Edit-Way 5.0. It provides information about commands as they appear in the
standard graphics interface supplied by Optima S.r.l.

Welcome
Congratulations for purchasing a program from OPTIMA S.r.l.

The program Edit-Way is a useful reference for the entry, the optimization and
the management of work orders for materials to be cut.

This package has been designed after many years of work, co-operation and
experience in the relevant field by skilled engineers always attentive to the
problems of firms.

All procedures have been made fully automatic and self-guided in order to
allow even the less experienced users to learn the various functions of the
program easily.

Edit-Way has been entirely developed at 32 bits on the Windows XP operating

system. It has therefore all technical features of this operating system, thus
being totally compatible with it.
Any peripheral or pointing system, such as printers and mice, supported by
Windows XP are automatically compatible with Edit-Way.

User Guide 5
Edit-Way 5.0

Main features
Edit-Way is based on a computerized workstation located on machine board,
where all control functions for the interaction between system and cutting table
are performed. This workstation allows you to perform all functions necessary
for entering data, optimizing and cutting work orders, as well as acquiring data
from optimizations performed in the office with OPTIMA or OPTIMA
compatible systems. The program offers various functions, among which:

Optimization
No limit in using different sizes for the pieces to be cut or different sheet sizes.
Automatic and extremely quick and efficient optimization. Pieces are arranged
inside cutting plans so as to generate the smallest possible waste areas and to
allow, at the same time, for an easy breakout of optimized sheets.

Display
The display on machine board of the Edit-Way system allows the complete
control over cutting activities.

Sheet Stock
Edit-Way’s sheet stock management is based on default parameters.

Shape Management
Uses a built-in parametric library of over 300 models. For each shape, the
system automatically inserts a trim, if required. You can also read and write
shapes in the DXF format as well as in the most common formats used in the
glassworks sector.

Data Import
Edit-Way system can import data of work orders previously optimized in the
office, or - if entirely installed on the computer located on machine board - it
can be directly interfaced with the main optimization system and make the
most of its features. Edit-Way is also capable of importing optimized or non-
optimized data generated by non-Optima systems. As these functions are
OPTIONAL, for further information on such systems contact the Optima sales
structure or your dealers.

Post-Processor
Automatic optimization of the cutting path and subsequent creation of the CNC
file for ANY linear or shape cutting machine and for the bending machine. The
program can communicate with the machine both via path and through a serial
cable.

User Guide 6

Installation
The installing procedure is very easy as it is fully automatic and self-guided.
No particular knowledge of the operating system is required to perform it
properly.

Connecting the Hardware Security Key

Before installing the program, connect the hardware security key. To do so,
plug it into the parallel port or into the USB port (depending on the kind of key
you have).

If you have a parallel port key first unplug the printer cable from your computer,
then insert the key and plug the printer cable into the back of the hardware
security key. If the printer available is not a network printer the use of a second
parallel port (LPT2) is recommended for the connection of the hardware
security key. This allows you to execute any program function even during
printing, that is when the parallel port is busy (printing under way). In some
cases printing may be interrupted.

NOTE: The optimization program works only with the right hardware security
key. Should the hardware security key be altered, the concession of the
program utilization license will be immediately withdrawn.

Installing Edit-Way
Installing Opty-Way® is the same as installing any other program for Windows,
i.e. synthetically:

1. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.

2. The autorun window opens (if the autorun feature is disabled, open My
Computer and double-click on the CD drive unit).
3. Install the hardware security key drivers so that the key is properly
detected.
4. Install Edit-Way and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Registering Edit-Way
Registering your program (through the registration card attached to this
manual) entitles you to receive information on future updates, to access the
Optima Technical Assistance Service and to have the product repaired or

Chapter

1
1- DESCRIPTION OF COMMANDS

Main Window
When starting the Edit-Way program for the first time a window like the one
below appears:

The cutting plan editing function allows you to display a previously optimized
cutting order, and to make changes to the cutting plan structure in terms of
type and quantity of the pieces contained and characteristics of the sheets
used by the optimization system.
The Edit-Way system allows you to:

Create a new optimization automatically or through manual placement.

Create a cutting plan with XYZ cuts.
Open a file that has already been optimized by an Optima system (the file
can be read locally, through a network or floppy disk).
Modify a cutting plan.
Insert new pieces.
Move/delete a piece or groups of pieces.

User Guide 11
Edit-Way 5.0

File Menu
From this menu you can set all the main program parameters. You can define
the machine configuration and the data related to the current cutting order.

New Work Order / Re-Optimization

Allows you to create a new work order for entering and possibly optimizing
pieces.
Toolbar
File Menu New Work Order / Re-Optimization
Shortcut Key Ctrl+N

The window is divided into two parts: the top part contains the parameters
related to the optimization and the sheets; the bottom part contains the data
pertaining to the pieces to optimize.

Commands

Sheet Sizes from Optimization

Allows you to use for re-optimization the sheets saved in the optimization
instead of those inside the Sheet Stock.
This is useful when you wish to re-optimize a work order that was previously
optimized by another Optima system.
Toolbar
Sheets Menu Sheet Sizes from Optimization

User Guide 12
Edit-Way 5.0

Shortcut Key Ctrl+F

The “Pos” field of the sheets in the optimization will be displayed in light blue
so that you can immediately recognize whether you are working with sheets of
the original optimization or with sheets currently found in the program stock.

Optimization
Allows you to start an optimization using the selected data.
Toolbar
Optimize Menu Optimization
Shortcut Key Ctrl+O

Selecting Sheet Sizes

The program will then automatically choose the existing size(s) that
generate(s) smaller waste based on the dimensions of the pieces entered.

To use only specific sheet sizes select those required through a multiple sheet
selection. If the number of sheets available is not enough to complete the
optimization, the optimization is not completed or the program uses other
sheet sizes among those selected.

Avvio dell’ottimizzazione
After setting all the parameters you can start the optimization by clicking on the
"Optimization" icon.
To interrupt an optimization just click on the icon. The optimization in
progress is completed and then the system stops.

The program can carry out various optimizations depending on the type of
optimization chosen. At the end, the result showing the smallest real waste is
selected automatically.

It is recommended to use the Automatic or Full optimization to minimize the

waste coefficient to the detriment, however, of the optimization time.

You can also set the program so that it automatically chooses the best
algorithm at the end of the optimization and saves the result obtained. To do
so, you must enable the “Automatic Closing” option from the Optimize
menu.

Place
This feature allows you not to optimize the pieces you entered, but to place
them manually in the various cutting plans. Before executing the function, you
must enter all the pieces you wish to cut.
Toolbar
File Menu Place
Shortcut Key Ctrl+P

After pressing the button, the “New / Re-Optimize” window closes and an
empty cutting plan is displayed in the editor.
The sheet size selected in the table will be used.

User Guide 13
Edit-Way 5.0

NOTE: If no sheet size is selected, the last one in the grid is automatically
inserted.

XYZ Cuts
Allows you to create a cutting plan manually by specifying the cuts to perform
on the sheet, instead of optimizing the pieces you entered.
If you execute this function from the New / Re-Optimize window, you must
select the sheet size to use for the new cutting plan.

NOTE: If no sheet size is selected, the last one in the grid is automatically
inserted.

If you execute the function from the main program window, the cutting plans
that were already entered will be displayed.
Toolbar
File Menu XYZ Cuts
Shortcut Key Ctrl+X

For additional information, refer to the XYZ Cuts section under “View Menu”.

New Sheet
Allows you to add a new sheet size. The program copies the selected line and
the operator can either confirm the data of each line, if it is OK, or, if not, enter
the new values.
Toolbar
Sheets Menu New Sheet
Shortcut Key F5

The sheet size added is used only for the current optimization. This procedure
prevents you from adding to and removing sizes from stock, thus simplifying
the entire process. Data entry is performed by simply typing sizes directly in
the table. You can also modify the parameters of existing sheets.

Remove Sheet
Allows you to remove an existing sheet size.
Changes made are used only for the current optimization.
Toolbar
Sheets Menu Remove Sheet
Shortcut Key Ctrl+F5 (or Del on the grid row)

New Piece
Allows you to add a new piece to the list of pieces to be cut by duplicating the
selected position. The program displays the previously entered data inside
each field. In this way the operator can either confirm them if they are OK or, if
not, enter the new values.

Insert Shape (Optional)

In Edit-Way, you can insert shapes starting from a comprehensive library of
pre-defined shapes, which can be modified simply by modifying their
parameters.
To insert a shape, just press the Shape button, select the shape that most
closely resembles the one required and modify its parameters and trims.
If you set the values for Automatic Shape Trim and Automatic Trim Angle in
Stock, each side of the selected shape is checked and, whenever the angle
formed by the entity and the bounding box is smaller than the value set for the
Automatic Trim Angle or the entity is tangent to the box, a trim equal to the
value for the Automatic Shape Trim is inserted on that side.

To make further changes to the shape, such as inserting outgoing cuts,

carrying out mirror and array operations, etc., you can start CAD-Way by
pressing the button. The window that opens will show the shape and the
parameters you set, as well as a special menu containing the necessary
editing commands.

Editing a Shape (Optional)

Once a shape has been inserted, you can edit it at any time by pressing the
button.

If only shape parameters were changed, a window opens in which you can edit
parameters or set trim values. To make further changes to the shape you can
start the CAD program by pressing the button.

User Guide 15
Edit-Way 5.0

If advanced changes were made to the shape, the CAD program will open and
show a special menu.

Importing a Shape (Optional)

You can also import shapes created by external CAD programs, simply by
pressing the F7 (or F9) key and selecting the file you wish to import. From
Geo-Way, you will be able to modify the imported shape in the same way as
with parametric shapes.

For additional information, refer to the CAD program manual.

Remove Piece
Allows you to remove a previously inserted piece.
Toolbar
Pieces Menu Remove Piece
Shortcut Key Ctrl+F4 (or Del on the grid row)

Windows

Optimization Window
This tab allows you to select various options the optimizer must take into
account during optimization.

User Guide 16
Edit-Way 5.0

Name: Is the name of the work order being created. Maximum 8 characters
can be entered.
Material: : Allows you to select a material among those entered into the stock.
Selecting a product will display the list of available sizes in the sheet grid on
the right.
Optimization Mode: You can choose among various optimization calculation
algorithms:
Basic: The software system generates 4 different optimizations. At the end of
the calculation sequences the system chooses the "best result" automatically.
Complete: In addition to the 4 algorithms of the automatic method the
optimizer also uses 12 other algorithms. Therefore, the system may find
combinations of pieces that further decrease waste.
Method 1-4: The optimization module has four types or optimization
algorithms, which allow you to carry out slightly different optimizations. Button
1 to 3 allow you to select the method to use; no. 1 is the fastest and no. 3 the
slowest, as it tries a greater number of combinations. Although it is always
advisable to try all combinations to be sure to have found the best
optimization, we can state that method no. 1 (default) is used in most cases,
whereas method no. 2 or 3 is used for small optimizations only. You can also
carry out an optimization "by crosscuts" by simply selecting method 4. This
generates a greater number of crosscuts (there will be a crosscut per every
piece positioned in the bottom part of the sheet), which makes the sheet easy
to be broken out. Waste might in this case slightly increase.
Optistrato: A special algorithm used when the Optistrato module for
laminated glass is available.
Group Positions: The value for this field can range between 0 and 999. The
higher the value, the higher the extent to which positions are grouped. This
means that a single position is spread over a smaller number of cutting plans
to make identification and breakout easier. Obviously, an excessive increase
in this value may increase waste.
Use Priority: Enables the use of the Priority assigned to the pieces.
Check For New Waste: Allows you to enable/disable the search for waste
areas being greater than the value entered into the sheet parameters in the
stock procedure.

Sheet Window
This window allows you to modify the parameters of the sheets in stock.
Changes made are used only for the current optimization.

NOTE: Refer to the Sheet Stock section for the description of the available
fields.

Trim Window
This window allows you to modify the trims set in the stock. Changes made are
used only for the current optimization.

NOTE: Refer to the Sheet Stock section for the description of the available
fields.

Piece Window
The fields are:
Quantity: The number of pieces to be cut to the same size using the same
material.
Shape: Refers to the code of the shape you previously created with the
drawing program CAD-WAY or GEO-WAY. When you insert a shape, the

User Guide 17
Edit-Way 5.0

dimensions of the relevant bounding box are automatically displayed in the

X and Y dimension field. Max. 8 alphanumeric characters are accepted.
X Dimension: Refer to the X dimensions of the piece (not requested in case
of shape entry) and the relevant unit of measurement.
Y Dimension: Refer to the Y dimensions of the piece (not requested in case
of shape entry) and the relevant unit of measurement.
Customer: Is the name of the customer who ordered the piece (max. 12
alphanumeric characters).
Order: Is the order number assigned by the customer (max. 12
alphanumeric characters).
Rack: Destination rack for the piece.
Priority: Is the priority of use given to a position with respect to the others.
Pieces with a higher priority value are always inserted into the first sheets.
The max. value is 99. Priority leads to a worse result as for waste.

Additional Data Window

The fields are:
Rotation: Refers to the orientation of pieces inside a cutting plan. All pieces
are oriented according to the same principle. This function is to be used only
when cutting a material that has a pattern or veins, as all pieces are arranged
following the same direction. Rotation leads to a worse result as for waste.
Grinding: Is a value to be summed up to the X and Y dimensions of the piece.
It is useful to define the actual dimensions of the piece to be cut and finished
piece. The piece size is thus increased, but its correct dimensions are printed
on labels.
To change it from One Side to Four Sides or vice versa, refer to the "Setup"
chapter.
X1 Grinding: The grinding value for the X1 side (lower side) when grinding is
performed on four sides.
Y1 Grinding: The grinding value for the Y1 side (left side) when grinding is
performed on four sides.
X2 Grinding: The grinding value for the X2 side (upper side) when grinding
is performed on four sides.
Y2 Grinding: The grinding value for the Y2 side (right side) when grinding is
performed on four sides.
Notes: Is an additional description for each work order line. It can be printed,
for instance, on self-adhesive labels to be applied onto cut pieces. Any type of
description can be entered with a max. of 32 alphanumeric characters.

Hundredth of Millimeters

The second pull-down menu is used to define the internal unit of

measurement of the program.

IMPORTANT: You must modify the unit of measurement from this second
pull-down menu ONLY the first time you start the program.
Modifying this parameter later leads to a malfunctioning of the program,
which will not be able to recognize all the previously entered data.

NOTE: Choosing one option or the other will not compromise the use of any
of the units of measurements of the program. You will be able to use
millimeters and inches (as well as their multiples and submultiples)
regardless of the option you chose. However, it should be noted that using
the internal unit of measurement and the default unit of measurement
associatively avoids approximation errors.

Configure UM: Allows you to select the unit of measurement to be

customized.
Linear Postfix: Is a code, necessary for identifying the unit of
measurement used. This code is automatically added when the values
you enter refer to the default unit of measurement. It is instead to be
specified when the value you enter refers to a different unit of
measurement
Area Postfix: Indicates the code necessary for identifying the unit of
measurement used for calculating surface areas.
Weight Postfix: Indicates the code necessary for identifying the unit of
measurement used for calculating weight.
Linear Conversion Factor: Indicates the conversion factor, with respect
to the unit of measurement adopted by the optimization program, i.e.
millimeters, necessary to convert the input data and to make it usable by
the optimization program.
Area Conversion Factor: Indicates the conversion factor, with respect to
the unit of measurement adopted by the optimization program, i.e.
square meters, necessary to convert input data and to print calculated
surface areas correctly.
Weight Conversion Factor: Indicates the conversion factor, with respect
to the inner measurement unit adopted by the optimization program, i.e.
kilograms, necessary to convert entered data and to print weights
correctly.
Fractions / Decimals: Allows you to specify whether decimal or fractional
values are used after the integer in the unit of measurement you enter.
Fractional Precision: Allows you to specify the highest denominator
accepted, if fractions were selected.
Number of Decimals: Allows you to specify the required maximum
number of decimals. It is active only if you set Decimals in the
Fractions/Decimals field.

Using different units of measurement

The program automatically uses the unit of measurement you set in the Setup.
You can, however, specify a different unit of measurement for each entry, by
indicating the relevant postfix, if required.

A postfix is a code that defines the unit of measurement to be used and is to

be entered right after the piece dimensions. When the desired unit of

User Guide 23
Edit-Way 5.0

measurement is different from the default postfix, it is to be specified in all

fields requiring it.

Postfixes and thus units of measurement available are as follows:

mm = Millimeters;
cm = Centimeters;
dmm = Tenth of millimeters;
cmm = Hundredth of Millimeters;
in = U.S Inches;
inf = U.S Inches Fractions;
inB = U.S Inches CNC;
tin = 1/1000 of U.S. Inches;
tf = Taiwan Foot;
ti = Taiwan Inches;
tiB = CNC Taiwan Inches;

You can even create new units of measurement and thus postfixes.

Automatic Work Order Name: Enables the automatic work order name. This
will be a progressive number between the Maximum and Minimum values
entered (-1 for no limits).
Automatic Shape Name: When a shape is saved from the program Geo-
Way, a shape name, i.e. a number incremented by one with each save
operation, is presented automatically. Numbers between the entered
Maximum and Minimum values will be used (-1 for no limits).
Cutting Plan Progressive: Enables the automatic numbering of cutting
plans, if allowed by the machine. Numbers between the entered Maximum
and Minimum values will be used (-1 for no limits).

Machines / General

NOTE: Not all the machines that can be used with our program support all the
features described on the following pages. Some of the fields may be
deactivated or, although activated, may not produce the results described.

Cutting Line Name: This description is very important, as it identifies the

cutting line the optimization is intended for. It can accept up to 32
alphanumeric characters. You cannot enter the same description for
different cutting lines.
Manufacturer: Identifies the manufacturer of the cutting table. Click on the
list box to display the list of the manufacturers supported.

via Path. The default path is A:\ but you can change it with a path on the
local HD or a remote computer.
Sheet Zero Position: Indicates where the zero point of the sheet is to be
located on the cutting table and thus where the cut is to be started.
Optimization Transmission Mode: Allows you to define how to send
optimized work orders. The "Full Work Order" option sends the entire file
necessary to cut the entire optimization at one time. Instead, the "Sheet by
Sheet" option sends one sheet at a time.
Sheets Sorting: Allows you to choose the order in which sheets (as defined
in Edit-Way) are printed and sent to the cutting system.

Machines / Parameters

Max Sheet X/Y Dimensions: Max. sheet dimensions allowed when entering
data into the stock or pieces.
X/Y Parking: Refers to the parking value, if required, to which the cutting
head is to be moved after cutting a sheet.
X/Y Offset: Indicates the translation of the cutting dimensions by a certain
value (it translates the zero point by the desired value).
Double Zero: Allows you to indicate the second reference for the Cutting
Table used when mirroring the sheet in the laminated glass cutting.
X1, X2, X3 Break-up Bars: Allows you to enter up to max. 3 dimensions
along X, corresponding to the positions of the breakout bars of the machine.
These bars are displayed when using the editor functions and allow the
operator to move pieces or groups of pieces so as to make them coincide
with the position of the machine bars, and thus to facilitate breakout. Set the
value to 0 so as not to display them.

User Guide 26
Edit-Way 5.0

Y1, Y2 Break-up Bars: The same as X1, X2, X3 Break-up Bars, but referred
to the positions of breakout bars along Y.
Max. X/Y-Crosscut Exit: Indicates the permissible maximum length of a cut
going out of a grid of pieces when the Join Waste option is activated.
Waste areas that are larger than this value are joined, whereas smaller waste
areas are split to make sheet break-out easier.
Safety Distance From Sheet Edge: Distance kept by the head during
positioning on the sheet edge. It is used to prevent the head from exiting the
glass during cutting if the glass edge is damaged.
Perpendicular Cut Distance: Refers to the safety dimension for cuts. Each
cut is automatically started after and stopped before another cut by the
value set for this parameter, so as to prevent the cut from going beyond or
touching the next perpendicular one in case of mechanical compensations.

Machines / Serial

Select the machine you wish to use. Even though all the values are set
automatically based on the specifications supplied by the machine
manufacturer, you can modify them at any time.

Machines / Optimization

No. Cutting Levels: Each cut generated by the optimization program has its
own well-defined features. The program can manage up to 5 different types of
cuts, namely:

User Guide 27
Edit-Way 5.0

X Cut: Vertical cut dividing a sheet into two halves along the short side
(usually called Crosscut).
Y Cut: Horizontal cut defined by 2 X Cuts, i.e., passing between two X cuts.
Z Cut: Vertical cut passing between two Y cuts.
V Cut: Horizontal cut passing between two Z cuts.
W Cut: Vertical cut passing between two V cuts.
Q Cut: Horizontal cut passing between two W cuts.
R Cut: Vertical cut passing between two Q cuts.
It is thus evident that each higher-level cut leads to a more complex break-
out of sheets. Possible combinations may be reduced to make cutting plan
break-out easier.
Max. No. of Crosscuts: Refers to the max. number of crosscuts that can be
generated in a cutting plan during optimization.
Tool Management: Allows you to enable/disable the use of a tool (such as a
disc) during glass cutting.
Tool Thickness: Refers to the thickness of the tool to be used to cut the
optimized sheet. For a thickness over 0, piece dimensions are increased,
so that the material removed during cutting (e.g. by a saw) does not affect
the dimensions of the finished piece.
X/Y Tool Exit: Is useful when disk saws are used to cut the material, in
order to take into account the particular type of cutting performed by the
tool. Pieces are grouped in "blocks" having a certain distance one from the
other so that pieces are not damaged by the tool. This field is displayed by
default in the tools table of the optimization procedure.

Machines / Post-Processor

Auto Send: Enables the automatic transmission when pressing the Send
button. You are not prompted to press OK to confirm transmission.
Pre-Processor Path: Indicates the path of an external executable that will
be started before an optimization to perform an external processing.
Post-Processor Path: Indicates the path of an external executable that will
be started after an optimization to perform an external processing.
Enable Shapes: If enabled, shapes and cuts (if possible) are sent to the
machine.
Shape Cutting Priority: If enabled, shapes (if present) are cut before the
corresponding bounding boxes.
Check Piece Compatibility: Checks work order input data and compares it
with the data in "Piece Data" for compatibility with the set limits.

User Guide 28
Edit-Way 5.0

Keep Shape Name: Exclusive function for some cutting systems. It allows
you to keep the number assigned as the name of the shape. If inactive,
shapes in the cutting order are numbered automatically and progressively.
Optimize Shapes: Calculates the best tool path to speed up the cutting
operation.
Optimize Shapes Inside: Calculates the best head path for shapes and thus
for any holes inside them and the corresponding head up movements.
Optimize All Shapes: Calculates the best head movement between one
shape and the other to speed up the cutting operation.
Join Offcuts: If enabled, offcut areas are joined automatically (when
possible). In a grid of pieces, only the last piece goes out upwards. All other
crosscuts are not made. This makes cutting more complex but quicker.
Enable Monodirectional Cuts: If active, cuts are all made in one direction.
This slows down the cutting operation, but reduces the error caused by the
rotation of the head. It also increases the cutting performance of systems
equipped with a PVB or vinyl cutting blade.
Enable CNC Info: Creates a text file with the information about the
optimization results.
Glass Thickness Management: Enables or disables the transmission of the
glass thickness value.
Loader Management: This feature is available only for some systems. It
creates an additional file with the sequence of sheets and the
corresponding positions on the rack the automatic loader must load to.
Enable Lateral Cutting Exit on Last Sheet: Allows the optimizer to let cuts
exit laterally, if the sheet side edge is closer than the upper edge.
Enable Cutting Velocity Management: Enables the machine speed changes
when changing from straight to shape cutting or vice versa.
Cuts as Displayed: If the table zero point is not the "Bottom left" corner you
can save the dimensions of cuts in the same way as they are displayed on
the screen. This feature is active only for some machine models. Normally,
this is managed by the Numerical Control of the cutting table.
Enable Labels: Allows you to send to the cutting table the data pertaining to
the labels that are printed and applied onto glass items automatically. This
option is active only for some special machines. Use Label-Way to select
the type of label to use for each work order.

Machines / Compatibility

Minimum Box X / Y Side: Minimum dimension allowed for the X and Y sides.

User Guide 29
Edit-Way 5.0

Piece Description: Allows you to select the fields you wish to display inside
pieces in every single sheet. You can "sum up" more items. The program
automatically reduces the font size for a correct display. With very small
pieces, however, or very long descriptions the writing may "go out" of the
piece. In this case only the Position value is set as the "Piece Description".
To work properly, the "Work Order Progressive" field must be the only
active field.

NOTE: When selected fields are too long to be displayed inside a piece, only
the piece position will be shown.

Display Options: Allows you to configure the display of cuts.

Offcuts: Enables / Disables the display of waste areas with a different
color.
Crosscuts: Enables / Disables the display of crosscuts.
Cutting Paths: Enables / Disables the display of outgoing cuts.
Cut Errors: Display with a red line the wrong cuts.
Shapes: Enables / Disables the display of shapes.
Black and White: Enables / Disables the Black and White display of the
sheet.
Breakout Bars: The position of breakout bars is displayed on the screen.
Dimension Information: Allows you to select the values you wish to display.
You can display the number of pieces of a block (Total Block Rep.), add the
dimensions of the piece (Piece Dimensions), the dimensions of cuts
(Absolute Dimensions) as well as the X and Y repetitions of the pieces of a
block (Block X/Y Rep.). With No Dimension the "Piece Description" is
displayed on the screen only.
Dimension Type: If also the dimensions of cuts are displayed (Absolute
Dimensions or Block X/Y Rep.), you can decide whether you want to
display the dimension of the cut with respect to the sheet 0 point (Absolute)
or to the previous crosscut (or cut) (Incremental).
Unit Of Measurement; Allows you to choose the unit of measurement used
for pieces and sheets:
Inserited: Show the UM used for each piece (they can be different).
Default: Show always the default UM set on the program.
Piece Dimensions: Allows you to configure the display of the dimensions of
a piece.
Real: Dimensions of the finished piece.
Added: Dimensions of the piece including the addition for grinding.
Display Pieces Grid: If "Total Rest" is active, the number that appears in the
Rest field of the table refers to the total value of the optimization. If it is
inactive, the number refers to how many pieces of the corresponding
position must be present in the sheets that follow the sheet displayed in
order to complete the position.

Sheets Stock
The Stock menu allows you to enter and file data about the materials that are
most commonly used for optimization. This procedure is very important, as a
work order cannot be optimized if the material/s relating to it was/were not
coded in the stock.
Coding the most commonly used materials is therefore necessary in order to
optimize work orders as well as extremely useful for the operator. It allows the

User Guide 31
Edit-Way 5.0

user to immediately identify a material and at the same time speeds up the
whole procedure.

It is a good rule to assign each material a short and meaningful Code. Below is
a simple table listing some codes we created for some of the most commonly
used materials in the glass field.

Code Thickness Description

FL4 4 mm FLOAT
BR5 5 mm BRONZE
MR3 3 mm MIRROR

Materials Table
This table has the following fields:

Icon: Symbol that identifies the selected type of material.

Monolithic: Glass consisting of a single layer.
Laminated: Glass consisting of two layers separated by a plastic film
interlayer. The thickness value of each of the three materials must be
entered in the three respective fields.
Monolithic-Low E: Monolithic glass specially treated to reduce the
passage of UVA rays.
Laminated-Low E: Laminated glass specially treated to reduce the
passage of UVA rays.
Id.: Progressive numeric code that identifies the material.
Material: Is the short name of the material and can consist of a string of
max. 12 alphanumeric characters.
Description: Includes all important data about the material; it can consist of
max. 32 alphanumeric characters.
Thickness: This field refers to the total thickness of the material.
1st Glass Thick.: Thickness of the first glass layer of a laminated glass unit.

User Guide 33
Edit-Way 5.0

Plast. Thick.: Thickness of the plastic interlayer between the two layers of a
laminated glass unit.
2nd Glass Thick.: Thickness of the second glass layer of a laminated glass
unit.
Trim X1-Y2: Correspond respectively to the distance from the lower edge,
the left edge, the upper edge and the right edge of the glass sheet, where
cuts to square the sheet have to be made and starting from which pieces
are arranged in the optimization.
Trims X1 and Y1 are actually cut by the machine. They are useful to avoid
using the edge of the sheet, which is usually irregular. Trims X2 and Y2
refer, instead, to the minimum distance from the upper and right edge
where pieces cannot be arranged.

NOTE: If a Minimum Distance value is set instead of the trim values X2 and
Y2, the optimization program uses that distance value also for sides X2 and
Y2. This means that pieces are arranged, if possible, so that their sides
coincide with the sheet edge. If this is not possible, pieces are arranged at a
distance from the sheet edge that’s at least the Minimum Distance setting.

Min. Dist.: Corresponds to the minimum permissible distance between two

parallel cuts, which is necessary to allow pieces to be easily separated. If
you set this value to 20 mm, for example, no cutting plan will include two
nearby pieces or cuts that have a distance one from the other lower than 20
mm. Obviously, whenever the same cut is shared by two pieces, such a
distance is not taken into account.
X / Y Crc.: Is a particular type of cut, namely a cut that divides a sheet into
two parts along the X side. This allows the sheet to be broken out by means
of the breakout bars of the cutting table. The value you set corresponds to
the maximum distance from the Y side of the sheet, where a crosscut has to
be made.
Min. X / Y Waste: Minimum dimensions of waste areas that the optimization
program generates and you wish to consider as Offcuts. Offcuts are large
enough to be reused in the following optimizations and need to be entered
into the stock again.
Auto. Shape Trim: Sets the trim value for the shapes when the shape has
angles that are smaller than the value set in the "Angle" field.
Sh. Trim Angle: Value for the angle to be trimmed automatically.

Sheet Sizes Table

This table has the following fields:

Pos.: Position number of the sheet size. This number is automatically

increased when entering a new sheet size.
Qty: Indicates the number of sheets available in the stock.
X Dim.: Is the length of the sheet. The X dimension usually corresponds to
the greater dimension, as it refers to the longer side of the cutting table. For
spacer strips, it is the only dimension present.
Y Dim.: Is the width of the sheet. The Y dimension usually corresponds to
the smaller dimension, as it refers to the shorter side of the cutting table.
For spacer strips, this dimension does not exist.
Rack: Is the Rack number of the material you entered. It is useful to
manage the loading equipment.
Cross. Type: Allows you to define how the sheet is to be optimized. In
particular. it allows you to decide whether the Crosscut is to be made on the
shorter side of the sheet only (X value), on the longer side only (Y value) or

User Guide 34
Edit-Way 5.0

if the optimization program is free to decide which is best (X/Y). This last
solution usually generates a smaller waste coefficient, but even cutting
plans, which, in some circumstances, may be difficult to open.
Waste: Allows you to define whether the sheet is a normal sheet or an offcut
sheet. Offcut sheets are always used before normal sheets. This field
allows you to enter Offcuts generated manually.
Prior.: Is the priority of use given to a sheet with respect to the others. The
higher the value for priority (maximum value 999) the more the selected size is
used. The program cannot use a size with a low priority until all sizes with a
higher priority have been used.

Display Cutting Levels

The cutting level coloring function allows you to graphically display the number
of cutting levels currently in use. It can be activated only if the optimization was
performed for a cutting table with a Post-Processor by crosscuts.
Toolbar
View Menu Display Cutting Levels
Shortcut Key F11

This function is particularly useful when your cutting table is limited to a certain
number of cutting levels (typically 3 for older machines, 5 or more for more
recent machines). In this way you can see whether you can transmit the
current cutting plan to the table.
If the number of permissible cutting levels is exceeded, the wrong pieces will
be displayed with a special color, different from the color of pieces that have a
correct position. In this way you can immediately see where the problem lies.

Pieces show different colors depending on the cutting levels needed to cut
them:

2 Cutting Levels
3 Cutting Levels
4 Cutting Levels
5 Cutting Levels
6 Cutting Levels
Number of Cutting Levels greater than the number allowed by the machine.

2- DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK AREA

Inspector
An Inspector on the left of the window allows you to display all useful data of
the optimization.
You can change displayed data simply by using the various navigation
buttons.

Pieces
This Inspector is divided into two parts. The top part
shows a table with the main data of each position.
In Sheet Mode, this table displays the data of all
pieces.
In Editor Mode, only the pieces that exist in the on-
screen sheet and the pieces with a Rest number
other than 0 are displayed.

The table has the following fields:

P: Position number of the piece. This value is
usually right aligned. However, if the piece was
inserted after the first optimization, the position
number will be left aligned.
U: Number of pieces used.
N: Number of pieces inserted in the work order.
R: Number of remaining pieces. A negative value
in this field means that more pieces were inserted
than those required according to the original work
order. When this value is other than zero, the
entire line will be displayed in red.
X: X dimension of the piece.
Y: Y dimension of the piece.

Double-click on one of the table rows to automatically

insert the desired piece selection.

The bottom part, instead, shows the data pertaining to the desired piece.
To display data, just position the mouse on the desired piece in the Editor
Mode.

U: Number of sheets used.
N: Number of sheets in stock that have the same
size.
R: Number of sheets that will remain in stock
after cutting the entire work order.
X: X dimension of the sheet.
Y: Y dimension of the sheet.

To insert a new sheet in the Sheet Mode, just

double-click on the desired line. A new sheet with
the selected size will be inserted after the selected
sheet.
In the other part, the Inspector shows the data
pertaining to each sheet size (in Sheet Data) and to
the material used (in Parameter Settings).

Repository

Adding a Cutting Plan

To add a cutting plan using a sheet size that already exists in stock, just select
the Sheets Inspector in Sheet Mode and double-click on the desired sheet
size.
The new cutting plan will be inserted after the one selected with the double
click. You can move it later using the Modify Repetitions function described
above.
If the sheet size you wish to use does not exist in Stock, you must add it using
the “New Cutting Plan” function described above. Then, you will be able to
insert it in the optimization.

Adding New Pieces

You can add pieces to the cutting plan simply by selecting them from the table
in the Inspector with the same name. At this point, a selection is created using
the piece dimensions. The selection can later be inserted (if possible) in the
desired point. For additional information refer to the description of the Insert
command and the Parking menu.
If the piece you wish to insert does not exist in the list of pieces, you can add it
by pressing the “Insert New Piece” icon, as described above.

NOTE: Pieces added after the optimization are displayed in a different color with
respect to the other pieces.
In the “Pieces” Inspector, the Position field for added pieces will be left aligned
(and not right aligned).

Modifying a Selection
Selecting means highlighting a piece or block of pieces chosen by the user. Most
of the commands of the Editor mode act on selections.
A selection is displayed with a color that differs from the color of already inserted
pieces and overlaps the cutting plan.
Pieces belonging to a selection are displayed as solid if they can be inserted,
transparent if they cannot.
