SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

SOLID STATE CHEMISTRY ASSIGNMENT TWO

INSTRUCTIONS.

i. Write your NAME, SIN, PROGRAM

ii. You may submit your assignment before or on the Due date.
iii. Handwritten assignment is permitted, scan and send your work on AIMS only.
iv. Coping and late submission will not attract any marks.
v. Answer ALL questions.
vi. Lecturer: Mr. Kaleji Moses
vii. DUE DATE: 7TH May 2024.

QUESTIONS

1.
a. Calculate the tensile strength of a composite material consisting 60% by volume of
carbon fibers (with a tensile strength of 5 GPa) and 40% by volume of epoxy resin
(with a tensile strength of 100 MPa).
b. Discuss the advantages and limitations of using composites in engineering
applications, considering factors such as strength, weight, and cost
2. Discuss how the presence of impurities affects the electrical conductivity of
semiconductor materials
3. Calculate the degree of polymerization of a polymer chain consisting of 1000 monomer
units.
4. Calculate the magnetic moment per atom for a material with 4 unpaired electrons per
atom and a magnetic moment of 2.83 Bohr magnetons
5. Calculate the electrical conductivity (σ) of a material with resistivity (ρ)of 10 Ωm, a
cross-sectional area (A) of 5*10^-4 m2, and a length of 0.1m. Assume the material is
isotropic
