7/x = 17.5/22.5 = 175/225

X = 225 * 7 / 175
X = 1575 / 175

2. If 5 : a : : 20 : 28, then a is equal to

5 / a = 20 / 28 (cancel by 4)

3. If m : n = 3 : 2, then find the ratio (4m + 5n) : (4m – 5n).

(4m + 5n) / (4m – 5n)

Since m : n = 2 : 3, sub m = 3, n = 2
(4(3) + 5(2)) / (4(3) – 5(2)) = (12 + 10) / (12 – 10) = 22 / 2 = 11 / 1

Let X be common multiple of two numbers

 3X – 9 / 5X – 9 = 12 / 23
 23(3X – 9) = 12(5X – 9)
 69X – 207 = 60X – 108
 9X = 99
 X = 11
 Smaller number = 3X = 3*11 = 33.

To convert ratio into regular form, find LCM of denominators

 LCM = 140
 A = ½ * 140 = 70
B = ¼ * 140 = 35
C = 1/5* 140 = 28
D = 1/7* 140 = 20
 A+B+C+D = 70+35+28+20 = 153

10. In a bag, there are coins of 25 p, 10 p and 5 p in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 3. If there is Rs. 30 in

Coins are in Ratio 1 : 2 : 3

 (1X * 25) + (2X * 10) + (3X * 5)
 25X+20X+15X = 60X
 WKT., 1 rupee = 100 Paise
 Bag has 30 rupee = 3000paise
 60X = 3000 => X = 50
 5P coins in bag are 3(50) = 150
11. The ratio of two numbers is 2:3 and their product is 726. The smallest number between
the two numbers is?

Product of two numbers = 726

Ratio of two numbers = 2 : 3
Lets assume X as common multiple => 2x*3x = 726
 6X2 = 726
 X2 = 121
 X = 11
 Smallest of two numbers = 2(11) = 22.

12. A and B together have Rs. 1210. If 4/15 of A's amount is equal to 2/5 of B's amount, how
much amount does B have?
A+B = 1210
 4/15 * A = 2/5 * B
 20A = 30B => A = 3/2 * B
 Since A+B = 1210 => 3/2 * B + B = 1210
 5B / 2 = 1210 => 5B = 2420 => B = 484

Let us assume the original seats as follows

Mathematics = 5 parts = 500 seats
Physics = 7 parts = 700 seats
Biology = 8 parts = 800 seats
Mathematics seats are increased by 40% = 140% = 700
Physics seats are increased by 50% = 150% = 1050
Biology seats are increased by 75% = 175% = 1400
700 : 1050 : 1400 = 2 : 3 : 4

X + (x+3) + (x+6) + (x+9) + (x+12) = 50

5x + 30 = 50
5x = 20 => x = 4
Age of youngest child = 4

26. A is two years older than B who is twice as old as C. If the total of the ages of A, B and C
be 27, then how old is B?
Let C's age be x years. Then, B's age = 2x years. A's age = (2x + 2) years.
 (2x + 2) + 2x + x = 27
 5x = 25
 x = 5.
 Hence, B's age = 2x = 10 years.

27. Present ages of Sameer and Anand are in the ratio of 5 : 4 respectively. Three years hence,
the ratio of their ages will become 11 : 9 respectively. What is Anand's present age in
years?
Let the present ages of Sameer and Anand be 5x years and 4x years respectively.
5x + 3 / 4x + 3 = 11 9
(5x + 3) = 11(4x + 3)
5x + 27 = 44x + 33
45x - 44x = 33 – 27
x = 6.
Anand's present age = 4x = 24 years.

28. A man is 24 years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son.
The present age of his son is
Let the son's present age be x, man's present age = (x + 24) .
(x + 24) + 2 = 2(x + 2)
x + 26 = 2x + 4
x = 22.
Present age of son is 22 years.

29. A person's present age is two-fifth of the age of his mother. After 8 years, he will be one-
half of the age of his mother. How old is the mother at present?
Mother’s present age = x, Person’s present age = (2/5)*x
(2/5)*x + 8 = ½ *(x+8)
2(2x + 40) = 5(x+8)
X = 40 => At present mother is 40 years old.

30. The present age of a mother is 3 years more than three times the age of her daughter.
Three years hence, the mother’s age will be 10 years more than twice the age of the
daughter. Find the present age of the mother.

Let the daughter’s present age be ‘n’ years.

=> Mother’s present age = (3n + 3) years
As given data=> (3n + 3 + 3) = 2 (n + 3) + 10
=>3n + 6 = 2n + 16
=> n = 10
=> (3n + 3) = ((3 x 10) + 3)
Hence, mother’s present age = 33 years
