50 Ways To Make Music Income V5
50 Ways To Make Music Income V5
Version 5.0
I started this eBook to be a quick guide to 25 ways to make music income. Then it turned into 30.
By the time I finished, I was at 50 (or so) and felt it was okay to stop there!
But now here we are going into 2025 and even MORE opportunities are presenting themselves
for us to make music income.
AI has entered the picture, and it is threatening to both wipe us out AND pay us! Yes, we have
actually been paid by libraries to let AI use our music for developing new music.
We may feel that we lost ways to make music from time to time, but there are a myriad of ways
we can continue to bring income with our music or as someone working in music.
So, let’s get right into 50 ways you can make income in music.
1. Sync Licensing.
You should know how I feel about this one. See my videos for more on Sync Licensing
Playlist especially this one which details how I got my start and signed to three exclusive
libraries.
I also have a new course that is now complete, and we’ve even taught two classes with
the course already. It goes over how I got into sync licensing, signed with my first 5
libraries, got placements on television and movies, and have even see my first four figure
check.
It’s a lot of work. It’s not for everyone. But it is real, and since I found out about it, it has
changed my life in many ways. Licensing brought me back to composing, and helped me
achieve the dream I wanted since I was 13: to have a music deal (I actually have over 20
now) and to make income from my music compositions.
One caveat to this. In the past I have referred to this as “Stock Music Licensing.” But
stock music is only one non-exclusive music licensing option for your songs. Crucial
Music is also non-exclusive, and they focus on TV, Film, and Ads. Songtradr offers a
multitude of monetization options. You can sell your tracks on Beat Stores like BeatStars
or upload them to gaming sites. Most of these we will touch on later in this eBook.
If this is a focus you’d like to really master, check out our online course “The Stock
Market.” You can watch the introductory module for FREE at this link.
3. Gaming Music.
See told you. This isn’t something I do but there are libraries that seem to work very
much like stock libraries. I have heard the money is not as good, but then again, anything
done to scale…Check out this interview with Steven Melin who is the MAN in this
space.
5. Music Composer.
There are many people who need you to compose music for events, for their lyrics, for
their dog…be a composer for hire and think outside the box!
And beyond composing for individual’s or events, there is also a whole world of
professional music composing for classical or performed stage music. Look for more
information about this from our Hello Composers! brand.
6. Music Arranger.
Another unsung and under the radar profession. But every artist, player, church, school,
and more needs talented arrangers who can take a song and arrange and produce it like a
pro. Extra point$ if you specialize in orchestral, strings, or horn part arranging. I also talk
about arranging quite a bit on my Hello Composers! brand.
7. Artist Gigs.
If you have been an artist and ever done a gig, this is pretty self-explanatory. Still the best
immediate payment (if you’re paid or can sell product) music income there is. Here are
several possible places to gig and make music income. (More on some of these towards
the lower 50.)
• Bars
• Coffeehouses
• Churches
• Retirement Homes
• Parties
• Hospitals
• Restaurants
• Hotels
• Special Events
9. Artist Streaming.
This is an income that most composers ignore, and most artists don’t work hard enough.
See our videos with Tom DuPree and Dan Barracuda about making money with Spotify
and other streaming services.
12. CD Sales.
These are definitely in decline, but in some genres (southern gospel, classical, jazz) they
still may sell. They can also be still packaged with T-Shirts and other merch as a bundle.
FYI: I taught at a local recording store for 2-3 years recently and it was a good way to
have a 5-figure income in addition to all my other music incomes!
And there is money to made here selling eBooks, courses, consulting time, and getting
monetized by YouTube.
45. Hospitals.
Many hospitals have someone playing the the piano softly for visiting loved ones. Easy
gig, mask required?
46. Hotels.
Same deal. Many posh hotels have someone playing a grand piano or playing acoustic
guitar to enhance the ambience for guests.
49. A.I.
Yes the dreaded AI could actually be an income generator for you as some of the libraries
now like Pond5, AudioJungle, AudioSparx, and more are paying you for the use of your
songs in teaching AI how to make music. We just saw a massive payout at Pond5 in
August of 2024!
50. Royalties.
I can’t believe I didn’t have this in the past versions of this eBook. This is 10 or more
income in itself.
• Performance Royalties are usually paid anytime your song is performed, and yes this
also includes performing your own music on stage! I made $150 for one performance
of an 8-minute classical piece. But this also and mainly includes play on radio, TV,
and streaming.
• Mechanical Royalties are paid for the use of your song, for instance when music is
streamed, or sold on vinyl or CD.
• Sync Royalties are (sometimes) paid for the use of your song in film, television, and
more.
• Content ID Royalties are paid for the use of your music on YouTube and Twitch.
OK, see that was even more than 50 Ways (especially when you look at the different variables in
each one!) and I’m sure you even have thoughts for other ways to make music income.
I hope this list has been helpful and brought a few ideas to mind!
