RE: PROPOSAL FOR LIMURU FARM DEVELOPMENT

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well. As we continue to work towards the growth and
sustainability of Limuru Farm, I would like to propose several strategies and
improvements aimed at enhancing the overall productivity and efficiency of our farm,
with particular emphasis on the dairy unit and feed management.

For the period that I have worked here, I believe there are several areas where targeted
changes could significantly increase both the quality and quantity of our farm output,
leading to higher profitability and long-term success. Below are a few ideas I would
like to present for your consideration:

1. Improving the Dairy Unit:

A friesian cow can produce about 20 litres of milk a day, but our cows produce about
2 litres a day. To improve this, we can consider the following options:
Paddock systems for enhanced animal performance: By implementing a well-
designed paddock system we can create a more sustainable and productive grazing
operation leading to increased animal produce and profitability.
Rotational grazing reduces parasite loads and the spread of diseases as animals are
moved to fresh ground more frequently. This can be used strategically to manage
resources like water and shade, ensuring animals have access to what they need when
they need it. By reducing the need for constant supervision, making animal movement
easier, and improving animal behavior, paddock systems can free up manpower for
other important tasks on our farm.

Diversified Feed Sources: Incorporating a mix of high-quality forage crops such as

maize corn, nappier grass, hay, supper nappier, sweet potato vines and other locally
available by-products would enhance the nutritional profile of the feed. Growing
some of these crops on the farm would help reduce feed costs and ensure a consistent
supply. Also, Incorporating feed additives such as mineral supplements could improve
feed efficiency, cow digestion, and milk production. These supplements can also
support overall health and improve disease resistance.

Breeding management; Breeding should be timed coincide with ovulation for the
highest chance of conception. Heat detention is essential for determining the optimal
time for AI. Accurate records for breeding dates, heat cycles and other relevant
information are crucial for managing breeding program effectively. By understanding
the principles of dairy cow breeding and implementing effective management
practices, we can improve the productivity of our livestock while also contributing to
the long term sustainability of our farm

Genetic Selection: To improve overall herd quality, we could focus on selecting

animals that exhibit superior traits like high milk yield, good udder health, and
excellent reproductive performance. Genetic testing and artificial insemination could
be implemented as part of a more systematic breeding program.

Milk Production Monitoring: By implementing an automated milk monitoring

system or record keeping, we could track individual cow milk production, identify
under performers, and address any issues related to health or nutrition early on,
leading to increased milk yield per cow.
Increasing Overall Farm Produce:

Animal Health and Welfare: To increase production efficiency across the entire
farm, a well-rounded animal health management plan should be implemented. This
could include vaccination schedules, parasite control, and providing adequate shelter
and space for the animals, ensuring that they are in the best possible condition to
maximize their output.

Expanding Livestock Production: Beyond dairy, we could explore diversifying into

other areas of animal production, such as beef cattle, poultry, or even small ruminants
like goats, which would help balance revenue streams and utilize farm resources more
effectively.

Manure Management: Using manure as fertilizer for our crops could be a

sustainable practice that benefits both animal and crop production, would improve the
fertility of the land, leading to increased crop yields for feed and other produce. A
structured manure management system, such as biogas system, that can be used for
energy supply at our dairy unit and office thus reducing waste on the farm.

Reclaiming land with hay and forage crops by planting hay and forage on the
unused part of our land we can increase our farms productivity, and make better use
of resources. We can produce various types of hay e.g grass hay, mixed hay which
will allow us to cater to different market demands and potentially get higher prices for
these hay types. We can also grow forage crops such lucerne, orchadgrass and sell
them directly to farmers, or even feed stores. By carefully planning our forage and
hay production, managing costs effectively and identifying profitable markets, we can
turn them into a valuable source of income for our farm.

I am available to provide further information and support this initiative.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Kendi
