MEM506 24-25 Team Simulation Project

The document outlines a project for a Master of Engineering Management course, focusing on building and analyzing an ARENA simulation model for an Electronic Assembly and Test System. Teams of three students are required to develop the model, verify it, and report on various performance metrics, including production rates and utilization percentages. The project emphasizes collaboration, model verification, and the analysis of simulation results to derive key performance indicators.

MEM506 (OR & Simulation)

ARENA Simulation Project

Introduction:

 Form a team of 3 students and work on building and analyzing the following
simulation model (use your team identity in the name of every ARENA module).

 Work on the project as a team (each member needs to mention his/her

contribution while being responsible for the model and the report).

 The project is an Electronic Assembly and Test System that represents the
final operations of the production of ABC sealed electronic units (see the
process map shown below).
2

System Description:

 Part A enters the model with inter-arrival times being exponentially

distributed with a mean of X1 minutes (all times are in minutes). Part B is held
until a batch of 2 units is available; the time between arrivals of successive
batches is exponential with a mean of X2 minutes. Both A & B are sent to an
AB Assembly station. The AB Assembly process time follows a triangular
distribution TRIA (X3,X4,X5). The subassembly AB is then sent to ABC
Assembly station.

 Part C enters the model with inter-arrival times being exponentially

distributed with a mean of X6 minutes. Part C is then instantly transferred
to part C Preparation Area where the part is deburred and cleaned and sent
to the ABC assembly station.

 The ABC Assembly process time follows a normal distribution NORM (X7,X8).
The ABC Assembly is then transferred instantly to the QC station. The
Quality Control (QC) station is used to test the quality of the ABC Assembly
with a cycle time that is uniformly distributed UNIFORM(X9,X10).

 Based on the QC, 80% of the ABC Assemblies pass the inspection and are
transferred instantly to the shipping department. The remaining parts are
processed at the rework area where they are disassembled, repaired, cleaned,
assembled and retested. After rework, the area supervisor classifies the
reworked items as Salvage/Scrap. 70% of these parts are salvaged and
transferred to the shipping department and the rest are transferred to the
scrap area. The time to rework a part follows an exponential distribution with
the mean of 60 minutes.

 Once you understood the process flow, you need to develop a conceptual
simulation model and decide on what data to collect from the model and what
ARENA entities are needed for the model.

 You also need to verify the model before analyzing its results.
3

This ARENA model requires:

 Entities are the individual parts

 A, B, C assigned as Attributes
 Create modules for A, B, C parts.
 Process modules for Prep C, Assembly AB, Assembly ABC, and Rework Area.
 Decide modules (2-way choice that provides a Pass or Fail that meets the
conditions)
 Depart modules for Shipping, Salvage/Shipped, Scrap
 Attribute Time assigned after Creates in Assign modules
 Record modules just before Departs for time in system
 Dispose modules

Building the Model with ARENA:

 To build the model, you need to open a new model window and place the
required modules on the screen (put team ID in each module).

 The team needs to select values for data used in the model (values for X1
through X10).

Final Model / Output Analyst:

-Verify model logic before reporting any results

- Enter the Project title (WITH YOUR TEAM IDENTITY) and analyst name (Team
leader) so they will appear on the output reports.

- Clear the Entities selection so we won’t get statistics on time in system stored out
by entity type.

- You may then experiment the difference in the resulting reports if you keep the
Entity statistics option checked then rerun your model.

- Set the replication length to 40 hours, the base time units to minutes and default
the remaining fields. (if number of entities in the model exceeded allowable limit
use, use a run time of 8 hours with 5 replications).

Project Report

A- Start the project report by a title page (project title, identity, and
team members and the role of each team member in the project)
followed by project description.

B- Implement the model using the given description/procedure in ARENA

(make sure that you use team identity in every module to distinguish
your work from other teams).

C- Under MODEL DATA, present a table that summarizes the used

values for X1 through X10.

D- Under the title “Model Building”, describe the model building process
(step by step) in your report using pictures of each ARENA module
used in the model (with your team identity shown).

E- Under the title “Model Verification & Validation”, mention 2 specific

actions to verify the model and one specific action to validate it.

F- Under the title “Simulation Results”, generate the simulation report

(entities, processes, queues, resources, etc.) and include it as an
appendix in your project report
5

G- Under the title “Results Analysis” answer the following Questions:

Q1- For ABC Assembly station, determine the average production rate
per an 8 hr shift?

Q2- For Shipped ABC Product, find the total number of units shipped,
units reworked, and units scrapped?

Q3-From the simulation results, what is the % shipped without repair?

Compare this % to the 80% and mention your recommendation.

Q4- For each process (Prep C, AB Assembly, ABC Assembly, Rework)

determine the utilization percentage?

Q5- For each operation in Q4, determine the average waiting time and
its 95% confidence interval? Hint: If results are not sufficient
to establish the confidence interval, show range as Min and Max.

Q6- Determine the average total time in system (waiting plus

processing) for Part A and B (follow the 80% flow). Based on
that, which part (A or B) will spend longer time in the whole
system?

Q7- How many units from A, B, and C were used in the 40 hours?

H- Under the title “Results Summary”, summarize the simulation results

using values of 5 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the system.
Select KPIs based on what is important for you as an engineering
manager in order to effectively manage the operations.
