Introduction to IEEE 11073

• ISO/IEEE 11073 is a family of standards designed to facilitate the communication between medical,
health care and wellness devices (like blood pressure monitors, weighing scales and glucose
meters) and external computer systems to be monitored by physicians, doctors…
• IEEE 11073 is in 2 parts:

11073 ‘Core Standards’

-10407 -10417 -10408

…. Device specialization (one for one
Blood Pressure Glucose Thermometer
device), defining the application layer

-20601 Optimized Exchange Protocol Transport and communication layer

BTLE NFC … Data link and physical layer

ISO/IEEE 11073-20601

• IEEE 11073-20601 defines the communication protocol between personal health

devices or “Agents” and hosts or “Managers”
• Provides protocol for connection and reliable transfer of actions and data between Agents and
Managers
• Defines commands, agent configuration information and overall protocol
• Designed to be transport independent (Bluetooth, USB, NFC…)
• Optimizes data exchange & enables efficient reconnections
ISO/IEEE 11073-20601 • Receives measurements from one or more
• Takes measurements (sensor) Optimized Exchange agent systems
• Limited capabilities (RAM, ROM, CPU) & Protocol • Reacts on update events from agents, and
limited power resource (small battery) triggers events on the agent
• Connection to a single Manager with a • Can communicate with multiple agents using
point to point connection separate point-to-point connections
• Low cost (consumer device) • Ex : Mobile phone, computer system, health
• Fixed configurations system
(data type and format does not change)

NFC wireless charging
Compliant with the NFC Forum specification for wireless charging, ST’s NFC readers
(poller) and tags (listener) enable the design of NFC wireless charging solutions.

Single, small form factor antenna for charging &

communication. Dynamic control of charging process.

Ideal for small battery-operated IoT devices (stylus,

wearables, earbuds, medical & fitness devices)

Allows 'on-the-go' charging via NFC-enabled

smartphone.
Transfer energy from poller to listener

• Wireless power transfers via NFC induction to charge receiver.

• Dynamic control of charging process.
• Detection of foreign objects to avoid damaging credit cards, passport, etc.

NFC (Near Field Communication) principle

• RF field is generated by NFC reader 13.56 MHz

• NFC tag is powered by RF field

A glance at NFC WLC technology

• Specified by NFC Forum

• WLC Listener (WLC-L) receives power from WLC Poller (WLC-P)
WLC-L
• Based on NDEF message exchange between poller and listener
• Two possible operation modes of power transfer
▪ Static mode (Easy implementation)
o Operates at a single power level (no power transfer negotiation)
o Low maximum power (~ 100mW), no FOD required as field remains within existing
limits defined for NFC communication
▪ Negotiated mode (Higher power)
o Power transfer parameter negotiation to control power level for charging WLC-P
o Supports 4 power classes (0.25, 0.5, 0.75 or 1W usable power at the receiver)
o FOD required (reader generates field strengths exceeding existing limits)
