6. Applications
1. Logistics management
MKGW4 gateway detects the assets
beacons on the goods to realize assets
monitoring, and detest the door sensor
status, at the same time, it can regularly
provide current location, to realize asset
monitoring and route management
during transportation.

4 www.mokosmart.com
2. Cold chain monitoring
MKGW4 gateway gathers real-time
temperature and humidity data from
sensor beacon to ensure the suitable
condition for goods transportation. When
an abnormal condition happens, gateway
can know it immediately, and inform the
driver to take measures timely.

3. Intelligent management for

school buses
MKGW4 gateway gathers real-time data
from students cards, gets the bus location
by GPS, and also detects the driving speed
by inside sensor, to create a safe journey
for students.

when an emergency occurs, the driver and

students can press the button on card to
call for emergency help, to avoid any
delays in rescue.

7. User Guide
7.1 How to insert SIM card
Firstly to disassemble the gateway, let us remove the screws on the bottom of the device, and
remove the back cover. Find the SIM card slot on the PCBA, then insert a Sim card into the slot.

5 www.mokosmart.com
7.2 How to power on the gateway
The gateway can be powered by the external DC power supply or the internal battery.
When it is powered by external power supply, the three lines (red, black and yellow lines) can be
directly connected to the corresponding signals inside the vehicle engine cabinet.

7.3 How to turn on/off the gateway

The gateway can be turned on/off by a Magnetic. When the magnet is moved closed to the Hall
sensor and moved away for three times, the gateway will be turned on/off.
After the gateway is powered on, we can also use APP or cloud command to turn it off.

6 www.mokosmart.com
8. Smart Functions
8.1 Bluetooth configuration
The gateway Bluetooth keeps advertising when it works, users can configure the gateway parameters
via Bluetooth at any time. The gateway advertising data includes MOKO defined adverting packet and
standard iBeacon response packet. Users can flexibly configure the advertising parameters, such as
advertising interval, Tx power and UUID, major, minor for iBeacon packet.

Users will use SIM cards from different carriers and different server settings, MOKO provides a demo
APP to help users quickly do the configuration.

8.2 Network connectivity

The gateway support CAT.1, NB-IOT, CAT.M and GSM connectivity, can connect to custom MQTT
brokers, also can work with AWS IoT.

8.3 Gateway uplink

8.3.1 BLE scan& report modes
8.3.1.1 Real time scan & immediate report
This is the default work mode, the gateway BLE scan is always on, it immediately transfers BLE data to
cloud through the cellular network.
This mode is mainly used for the external power supply, the gateway is always connected with cloud to
ensure the immediate data reporting.

8.3.1.2 Real time scan & periodical report

BLE scan is always on, the gateway reports BLE data according to the preset interval. In most time, the
gateway cellular module is in sleep mode, when the reporting time is coming, the gateway cellular exits
sleep mode and connect to network, then transfers BLE data to cloud. The gateway cellular module will
disconnect from network and enters sleep mode after data reporting is finished.

8.3.1.3 Periodical scan & immediate report

BLE scan is turned on periodically and keep scanning for a preset time length. In most time, the
gateway cellular module is in sleep mode, When the scan time is coming, the gateway exits sleep mode,
7 www.mokosmart.com
connects to network and turns on BLE scanning. BLE scanning will be stopped after the scan time
expires, the cellular module will disconnect from network and enters sleep mode after data reporting is
finished.

8.3.1.4 Periodical scan & periodical report

BLE scanning and data reporting are both periodical, the two periods can be different. The gateway will
report the BLE data from the last reporting time, it may includes more than one rounds of BLE scanning
data.

8.3.1.5 Turn off BLE scan

If BLE scan is not needed, then we can turn off it. BLE scan will be stopped, there is no any BLE data
reported to cloud.

8.3.1.6 Automation mode switch

When the gateway works in real-time scan&immediate report, the external power supply
disconnection is detected, it will automatically switch to real-time scan&periodical report mode to save
battery consumption.

8.3.2 BLE data filtration

With default configuration, the gateway will keep all the received Beacon data and transfer to cloud.
We can set data filter to make the gateway keeps only the needed Beacon data, to reduce unnecessary
data uploading.
 MAC filter: can add up to 10 sets of Beacon mac address, the full and part of MAC address are both
supported.
 Advertising name: can add up to 10 sets of Beacon advertising names, the full and part of name are
both supported.
 PHY: can select PHY 4.2, PHY 5.0 and coded PHY, the gateway will save the beacon data only
advertised on the selected physical layer.
 Raw data: filter Beacon data by the data frame types, including standard iBeacon, Eddystone-TLM,
Eddystone-URL, Eddystone-UID frames and MOKO defined private frames, such as MK BXP- device
info/MK BXP-B ACC/MK BXP-T&H/MK Button/ MK BXP-Tag/ MK PIR and MK TOF.
 Filter out duplicate data: In the periodical scan or reporting, if there are duplicate data, the
gateway will save and upload only one data which is last captured , discard the duplicate data in
the middle, to reduce data flow.

8.3.3 BLE data uploading

Users can select the uploading data content for each Beacon frames. For example, we can select
whether to upload UUID, major, minor for iBeacon frames. Users can configure the data content
flexibly so as to reduce the data length and communication cost.

8.4 Gateway downlink

In real time scan & immediate report mode, the gateway can receive cloud commands to connect MK
Button device, read battery voltage, trigger events, alarm status and upgrade Beacon firmware.

8.5 GNSS fix

The gateway supports indoor LBS and outdoor GPS positioning technology. It can fix location according
to the preset interval, movement or the platform command.
8 www.mokosmart.com
 When fix location periodically, the minimum interval is 1 minute, the gateway can fix position
every minute.
 When fix position based on movement, the gateway can get the location fixed when it detects start
moving or stop moving, and have different fix interval during moving and stationary.
 When fix location according to platform command, the gateway will immediately fix location and
report to cloud after it receives the location request from cloud.

8.6 Data back-up in disconnection

The gateway will store the BLE data and location data in local when the network is lost, sent the data to
cloud after the network comes back.

8.7 Vehicle ignition detection

The digital input on the hardware can be connected with ACC signal of the vehicles, it can obtain the
ACC on/off status regularly and report to cloud, users can understand vehicle status remotely.

8.8 Battery management

The gateway will periodically report the battery voltage to cloud, when it detects the battery voltage is
lower then the preset threshold, it will send an alarm message to the cloud to notify user the low
power status.

8.9 External power disconnection alarm

When the gateway detects the external power supply is disconnected, it will send an alarm message to
the cloud to notify users the operation.

8.10 OTA
There are two ways to upgrade the gateway firmware:
 Bluetooth DFU: use the configuration APP to connect the gateway Bluetooth, send the upgrade file
to the gateway for upgrade.
 MQTT OTA: send the upgrade command from the cloud, the gateway will download the upgrade
file from a HFS (http file server) for upgrade.

8.11 Reboot the gateway

The gateway can be reboot via configuration APP and cloud command. After reboot, the gateway will
automatically reconnect to the preset network and server.

8.12 Reset the gateway

There are two ways to reset the gateway, after reset, all parameters of the gateway will be restored to
factory settings:
 By the physical button on the hardware, press the button and hold for 5 second will trigger the
reset
 By configuration APP or cloud command.
