DATA PROCESSING

DATA PROCESSING
▪ Data in its raw form is not useful to any organization. Data
processing is the method of collecting raw data and
translating it into usable information. It is usually
performed in a step-by-step process by a team of data
scientist and data engineers in an organization. The raw
data is collected, filtered, sorted, processed, analyzed,
stored, and then presented in a readable format.
•Data processing relies on
various tools and techniques to
ensure accurate, valuable
output.
DATA PROCESS CYCLE
There are six stages of data processing cycle.
1. Collection
2. Preparation
3. Input
4. Processing
5. Output
6. Storage
▪ Input:
This is the stage where data is collected or entered into the system. It
could be in the form of text, numbers, images, or any other format.
▪ Processing:
In this stage, the collected data is manipulated, organized, analyzed,
or converted into useful information. This often involves
calculations, comparisons, sorting, and other operations.
▪ Output:
Once the data has been processed, the results are presented in a
meaningful format. This could be in the form of reports, graphs,
charts, or any other output medium.
▪ Storage:
After processing and presenting the data, it is often stored for future
reference or analysis. This stage involves storing the data in a secure
and accessible manner, such as on a hard drive, cloud storage, or
other data storage systems.
▪ Collection and computing of data:
Collection” involves gathering data from various sources, while
“computing” involves processing and analyzing the collected data to
derive meaningful insights or conclusions.

METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION
▪ Primary data
▪ Primary data is collected from first-hand
experience and is not used in the past. The data
gathered by primary data collection methods
are highly accurate.
▪ Primary data collection methods can be
divided into two categories: quantitative
methods and qualitative methods.
▪ Qualitative data collection
▪ Involves gathering non-numerical information
or data that cannot be quantified, typically
focusing on the quality, characteristics, or
attributes of a phenomenon. It aims to explore
and understand the meanings, perspectives,
and experiences of individuals or groups in
their natural contexts.
▪ Quantitative data collection:
▪ Quantitative data collection involves
gathering numerical information or
data that can be quantified and
analyzed statistically. It focuses on
measuring quantities, frequencies,
and relationships between variables
through structured and standardized
methods. Common quantitative data
collection methods include surveys,
experiments, systematic
observations, and measurements.
▪ Secondary Data Collection Methods
▪ Secondary data is data that has been used in the past. The researcher can
obtain data from the data sources, both internal and external, to the
organizational data.
▪ Internal sources of secondary data:
▪ Organization’s health and safety records
▪ Mission and vision statements
▪ Financial Statements
▪ Sales Report
▪ External sources of secondary data:
▪ Press releases
▪ Business journals
▪ Libraries
▪ Internet
MANUAL COLLECTION OF DATA
▪ Manual data collection traditionally consisted of clipboards, pens,
whiteboards, stopwatches, and timers. These were (and continue to
be) used to record production figures, downtime events, and scrap
rates. They were also used to measure labor and motion within the
workplace.
▪ As computer technology advanced, these tools were replaced by
Excel spreadsheets and eventually some standalone computer
software to provide better quality data and analysis. But the
recording and measurements were still manual and prone to human
error and bias. The data itself was delayed, inaccurate, and less
actionable.
AUTOMATED DATA COLLECTION
AUTOMATED VS MANUALLY DATA
COLLECTION
CONCLUSION
▪ In conclusion, data processing has become a crucial aspect
of modern computing and business operations, allowing
organizations to store, analyze, manipulate, and extract
insights from vast amounts of raw data. With advancements
in hardware and software technologies, combined with
evolving standards and practices in areas like privacy
protection and security, there is no shortage of demand for
skilled professionals trained in the field of data processing.
