ASSIGNMENT NO.

03
SUB: EEU501 ELECTRICAL MACHINES-II
TOPIC: SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR
1. Explain the construction and principle of operation of a synchronous motor.
2. Explain why the speed of a 3-phase synchronous motor remains constant at variable loads when it is fed
from a constant frequency supply.
3. Explain clearly the effect of change in excitation with constant load on the performance of a synchronous
motor.
4. Explain clearly the effect of change in load with constant excitation on the performance of a synchronous
motor.
5. Explain effects of varying excitation on armature current and power factor in a synchronous motor. Also
draw ‘V’ and ‘inverted V’ curves.
6. Draw the phasor diagrams of synchronous motor for lagging, leading and unity power factor conditions.
Name all the phasor.
7. Derive the commonly used expression for the power developed by a synchronous motor.
8. What do you understand by a synchronous condenser? Explain with the help of phasor diagrams its
operation and application.
9. Briefly describe the phenomenon of ‘hunting’ in a synchronous machine. How is it remedied?
10. Explain two important functions served by damper winding in a synchronous motor.
11. Explain application of synchronous motor as voltage stabilizer
12. A 50 kW, 400 V, 3-phase synchronous motor is operating at full load with an efficiency of 92%. If the field
current is adjusted to make its power factor 0.8 leading, estimate the armature current.
13. The effective resistance and synchronous reactance of a 2000 V, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor
are 0.2 and 2.2 per phase, respectively. The input is 800 kW at normal voltage and the induced line emf is
2500 V. Calculate the line current and power factor.
14. A 660 V, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor draws 50 kW at power factor 0.8 lagging. Find the new
current and power factor when the back emf increases by 50%. The machine has synchronous reactance of
3 and effective resistance is negligible.
15. A 3-phase, 400 V, star-connected synchronous motor draws 24 A at full-load unity power factor. If the
machine is operating at 95% efficiency. What will be the induced emf and total mechanical power developed
at full load and 0.9 p.f. leading? The synchronous impedance per phase is (0.2 + j2).
16. A 6-pole, 2200 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has armature resistance of 0.4 per
phase and synchronous reactance of 4 per phase. While running on no-load, the excitation has been adjusted
so as to make the emf numerically equal to and antiphase with the terminal voltage. With a certain load
torque applied, if the rotor gets retarded by 3 mechanical degrees, calculate the armature current and power
factor of the motor.
17. A 3-phase, 400-V, synchronous motor takes 52.5 A at a power factor of 0.8 leading. Calculate the power
supplied and the induced e.m.f. The motor impedance per phase is (0.25 + j3.2) ohm.
18. The input to a 11-kV, 3f, Y-connected synchronous motor is 60 A. The effective resistance and synchronous
reactance per phase are I Ω and 30 Ω respectively. Find (a) power supplied to the motor and (b) the induced
e.m.f. for a p.f. of 0.8 leading.
19. A 2,200-V, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has a resistance of 0.6 Ω and a synchronous
reactance of 6 Ω. Find the generated e.m.f. and the angular retardation of the motor when the input is 200
kW at (a) power factor unity and (b) power factor 0.8 leading.
20. 10. A 2200-V, 373 kW, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor has a resistance of 0.3 Ω and a
synchronous reactance of 3.0 Ω per phase respectively. Determine the induced e.m.f. per phase if the motor
works on full-load with an efficiency of 94 per cent and a p.f. of 0.8 leading.
21. The synchronous reactance per phase of a 3-phase star-connected 6600 V synchronous motor is 20 Ω. For a
certain load, the input is 915 kW at normal voltage and the induced line e.m.f. is 8,942 V. Evaluate the line
current and the p.f. Neglect resistance.
22. A synchronous motor has an equivalent armature reactance of 3.3 Ω. The exciting current is adjusted to such
a value that the generated e.m.f. is 950 V. Find the power factor at which the motor would operate when
taking 80 kW from a 800-V supply mains.
