Sombilon Task 1

The study titled 'Budget Battle' investigates the impact of social media influence on the spending and saving behaviors of college students in the Philippines. It addresses a research gap by examining both financial habits in a digital context, as previous studies have largely focused on either spending or saving separately. The research highlights the need for understanding how platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube affect students' financial management.

TASK 1

1. Research Title:Budget Battle: A Study on College Students’ Spending Habits, Saving

Behavior, and the Role of Social Media Influence

2. Variables:

- Independent Variable: Social Media Influence

- Dependent Variable: Spending and Saving Behavior of College Students

3. Purpose:

This study aims to explore how social media platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram, and

YouTube, affect the financial behavior of college students—particularly their spending

habits and ability to save. It seeks to understand whether exposure to influencers, trends,

or online marketing impacts how students manage their finances.

4. Research Gap:

While studies have examined the financial literacy and habits of students, there is limited

research that specifically connects social media influence with the personal finance

behavior of college students in the Philippines. Most existing literature also tends to focus

on either spending or saving alone, rather than both combined in a modern digital

context.

5. Short RRL (Review of Related Literature):

According to Lim et al. (2020), social media has become a strong influencer of consumer

behavior, especially among the youth. The study by Paredes & Soriano (2018) found that
Filipino students are easily influenced by online trends when making purchases.

Furthermore, a report by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (2021) pointed out that financial

literacy among young adults remains low, often leading to poor saving behavior.

However, few local studies deeply examine the link between social media and both

spending and saving decisions among college students—this study aims to fill that gap.
